Max Level Return—I'll Protect That Fragile One

”Xu Xingguang!” Xu Zeqing kicked fiercely at the gate of Xu Xingguang’s house, but it was barred from the inside, and even with a hard kick, it didn’t open.

”Xu Xingguang, I know you’re home, open the door!” Xu Zeqing pounded on the door forcefully and yelled angrily, ”Get out here, I have something to ask you!”

Xu Xingguang stood in the study on the second floor, staring expressionlessly at the gate that was constantly shaking.

”Miss Xu.” Sister Linlin suddenly appeared outside the study door, hesitating a little, she said, ”Mr. Xu asked you to open the door. He said that gentleman outside is making a fuss, and if the neighbors hear, it’ll be quite a joke.”

Xu Qingnian cared about face; he feared becoming the talk of the neighbors in town.

Nodding slightly, Xu Xingguang turned around and walked out.

Just before heading downstairs, she glanced toward Xu Qingnian’s room. ”Sister Linlin, my grandpa’s not well; it’s inconvenient for him to come downstairs. If someone bumps into him and he gets injured, it’ll be troublesome.”

Linlin understood what Xu Xingguang meant.

The man at the door should be Miss Xu’s father, Mr. Xu’s son.

Miss Xu harbors resentment towards Mr. Xu, but Mr. Xu can never truly let go of his son in his heart.

If he learns of his son’s plight, his momentary compassion might disrupt Miss Xu’s plans.

Sister Linlin is an outsider; she accompanied Xu Xingguang from being a frail, comatose person to this day, and she knows better than anyone the hardships Miss Xu has gone through.

During the grueling rehabilitation, she never saw her father come to visit her.

If a father is unkind, he shouldn’t blame the child for lacking filial piety.

Sister Linlin nodded and said, ”Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of the old man.”

Watching Xu Xingguang go downstairs, Sister Linlin returned to Xu Qingnian’s room and picked up the food on the bedside table, serving the old man.

Xu Qingnian was preoccupied with his son’s situation, having lost interest in eating.

Xu Qingnian said to Sister Linlin, ”Help push me downstairs to take a look. The kid is shouting so urgently, there must be something wrong at home.” Despite being a father, he can’t turn a blind eye to his child.

Hearing this, Linlin’s broad face broke into a smile. She said, ”Miss Xu is there, Mr. Xu. You can rest easy.”

”No, I can’t be at ease,” Xu Qingnian insisted, determined to go downstairs to see for himself.

He activated the wheelchair control, and as it started moving, he saw Sister Linlin swiftly position herself in front of the elevator doors.

Xu Qingnian frowned at Sister Linlin, somewhat annoyed, ”What are you doing?”

Sister Linlin placed the bowl heavily on the bench at the foot of the bed and sneered, ”Your son came in aggressively, clearly intending to cause trouble for Miss Xu. Mr. Xu, are you going downstairs to help your son or your granddaughter?”

Xu Qingnian paused.

But he believed this was a Xu Family matter, not something for an attendant like Sister Linlin to meddle in.

Xu Qingnian discreetly reminded Sister Linlin, ”You’re paid to work; your job is to take care of me. How have you come to involve yourself in the Xu Family’s private matters?”

Sister Linlin found it amusing. ”Family matters? Miss Xu and that gentleman have already severed their father-daughter relationship. This household is indeed the Xu Family’s, but it’s not Xu Zeqing’s home—it’s Miss Xu’s home!”

”Old man, you’re able to spend your old age peacefully here not because of your son downstairs causing a ruckus like a madman, but because of your granddaughter’s filial piety.”

”Miss Xu brought you out herself, clearly acknowledging that out of the entire Xu Family, only you are still regarded as her kin. If you go down now and, for the sake of your son, stand against Miss Xu, have you considered how Miss Xu would feel?”

”If I were you, I’d play dumb at this moment and dutifully be a sick old man, minding less, and possibly live to a hundred.”

Having lived all his life, it was the first time Xu Qingnian was reprimanded by a woman like this.

He found it incomprehensible.

During his years as a principal, he was always the one lecturing others; it was unheard of for others to lecture him.

Thinking of how Sister Linlin usually kept quiet, never uttering words beyond her duties, Xu Qingnian suddenly suspected that the words she just said might have been dictated by Xu Xingguang.

Xu Qingnian squinted his aged eyes, speaking with some irritation, ”Did Xingguang tell you to say those things to me?” How did a good family come to such turmoil?

”Miss Xu did not say these things to me.” Sister Linlin realized Xu Qingnian’s dissatisfaction towards Miss Xu and felt wronged on her behalf.
