I Am Immortal in Great Yu

Chapter 185: Chapter 77: Willing to Part With

The moon was dark and the wind was high. The night was deep.

From within a great expanse of shadow, black as mire, a masked figure crept toward the Fang Family carriage.

’That Fang Family brat is an expert with Hidden Weapons. As long as I don’t let him use them... Once I’ve dealt with him, I can still...’

Elder Wang thought of the Third Lady’s beauty, and his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard with a GULP.

Just as he was lost in his fantasy—

Suddenly, from the direction of the Fang Family carriage, a ghostly figure floated over.

”Huh?!”

Elder Wang gasped, his eyes instinctively widening.

Only then did he realize: that wasn’t a ghostly shadow, but a man!

But this person moved like a Ghost. His feet seemed to float above the ground, his form flickering erratically. In the dim light, he left a trail of afterimages as he shot straight toward him.

That person was...

’The Fang Family kid?!’

Elder Wang, having weathered his share of storms, didn’t let the shock rob him of his nerve.

”Die!”

Facing the approaching figure, a murderous glint flashed in his eyes. With a roar, he brought his blade crashing down.

’So slow. Far too slow!’

In Fang Rui’s eyes, Elder Wang was moving in slow motion, at half or even one-third speed. He dodged effortlessly and pressed his palm against the man’s chest.

’How can this be?!’

Disbelief contorted Elder Wang’s ugly face. His eyes bulged as he collapsed limply to the ground.

In this final moment, as his life ebbed away, his past flashed before his eyes, frame by frame, like a film: being born ugly and enduring endless humiliation, vowing to climb his way up... humbling himself, scheming and pulling strings to become the Chang Family’s Nursing Home, and practicing his techniques diligently... suffering constant discrimination, being ordered about at a whim... then the Chang Family’s decline, a sudden reversal of fortune, poisoning the old master, the treacherous servant lording it over his new masters...

—Oh, how triumphant he felt then, how high his spirits soared!

Afterward, he had goaded the madam and the young master into leaving with all their gold and silver...

Elder Wang had long since hatched a plan: once they reached a place where no one knew them, he would take the Chang Family’s money and become a master himself, surrounded by wives and concubines. As for the madam and the young master, he would imprison them and train them like dogs to vent all the frustrations of his past!

—Indeed, if he hadn’t harbored such ambitions all along, how could he have acted so ruthlessly? When Chang Qing caught him yesterday, he had, that very night and without a shred of guilt, left the man a babbling, paralyzed wreck.

Such a wonderful life had been right within his grasp, only to be cut short at the final moment, destroyed by this stranger he’d barely met. His beautiful dream was shattered!

He was filled with regret! With indignation! With hatred!

But it was no use. Elder Wang felt his consciousness fading. He collapsed to the ground with a THUD, his pupils dilating as he drew his last breath.

”Perhaps you were a man with your own story. Someone who was discriminated against, humiliated, and ridiculed... A pitiful man.”

All creatures under the frosty heavens strive for their own freedom. Fang Rui wasn’t one to play vigilante, punishing evil and rewarding good, just because someone was a villain. He wouldn’t arbitrarily decide another’s fate.

Few people are born evil; most are forged by their Acquired circumstances... ’You can’t understand a man’s journey until you’ve walked in his shoes, so don’t preach to him about the path he should take.’

Take this incident with the Chang Family and Elder Wang. Chang Qing and Mrs. Chang seemed innocent, but were they truly? Could it be that Father Chang had committed some sin, and they were now paying the price? After all, while the Taiping Army did indeed raid wealthy families, for the Chang Family to end up in such a state—forced to flee Changshan City—might they not have had their own issues to begin with?

Elder Wang seemed like the villain, but wasn’t it possible that he was once a pitiful man, ordered around and treated like a dog by the Chang Family?

In this world, the lines between right and wrong, good and evil, black and white, are never so clearly drawn.

”I don’t meddle in other people’s affairs, their grudges and feuds. But there’s one condition: don’t involve me!”

Fang Rui glanced at Elder Wang’s corpse and shook his head slightly. ”Your greatest mistake was directing your hatred at me.”

Just then, Elder Wang’s final shout of ”Die!” startled the entire camp. Rustling sounds came from the Fang Family carriage, a clear sign that Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family and the Third Lady were awake.

Meanwhile, from the front of the caravan, a number of figures were hurrying over.

’My Transforming Force can be both hard and soft. The palm strike I landed on Elder Wang detonated inside his heart. Any ordinary Physician would diagnose it as sudden cardiac death.’

’But how could a mighty Seventh Grade Martial Artist just drop dead? Now that, I couldn’t possibly say!’

A glint appeared in Fang Rui’s eyes. ’In any case, if I say he died suddenly, then that’s what happened. It’s the truth because I say it is.’

He simply waited on the spot. He didn’t rush to search for loot or look for the Chang Family ancestor’s travel journal, even though he knew there was likely a great deal of gold and silver in the carriage.

The reason?

He couldn’t be bothered. Besides, he wanted to avoid stumbling upon anything disgusting while searching—Elder Wang and Mrs. Chang were into some wild things, and it was highly probable their carriage contained certain... unspeakable implements.

Since they were closer, Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family and the Third Lady were the first to emerge. The color drained from their faces when they saw Elder Wang’s body beside Fang Rui.

”Brother Rui, what happened?” Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family asked, her voice trembling.

”Auntie!” The Third Lady started to ask the same question, but then she saw people approaching. She tugged on Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family’s sleeve and gave her a warning look.

”Mother, Third Sister, we can talk later.” Fang Rui shook his head slightly and walked toward Steward Chen and his men.

”Young Master Fang?!”

Steward Chen arrived with about ten guards. His eyes flickered as he took in Elder Wang’s corpse. ”May I ask... what happened here?”

”Oh, I was resting in my carriage when I heard someone outside shout the word ’Die.’ I came out to see what was going on and found he had dropped dead.”
