Kinky Temptation

”Easy, rabbit… it will be over soon,” the mother murmured soothingly.

She grasped the arrow in one quick, deft motion and pulled it free. The rabbit let out a brief cry of pain. Blood flowed faster for a moment before the mother pressed down hard with clean cloth, staunching the pouring flow. She cleaned the wound again and applied some soothing green salves.

The little girl watched intently, eyes wide with wonder. ”That looks like magic!”

Her mother chuckled, gently winding clean bandages around the creature’s middle. ”Not magic, sweetheart. Just knowing what herbs and ointments to use.” She tied the bandage neatly. ”There now. All done.”

Just as she finished, a deep, warm voice called out from the front door, ”How are my lovely wife and girl doing this fine morning?”

The little girl’s face lit up. ”Father!” she cried, hopping off the stool. The injured rabbit momentarily forgotten, lay quietly on the table. She ran towards the sound, her silvery hair flying behind, ready to be enveloped in her father’s strong, loving embrace.

The tall, broad-shouldered man knelt down, putting a hoe on his hand away before opening his arms wide. ”Come here, my little angel!” he boomed, affection warmed his voice.

The little girl eagerly threw herself into his embrace. Her father’s clothes, like his face in the girl’s hazy memory, were rendered in shades of black and grey – the details lost to time, overshadowed by the brightness of the moment. He was simply her beloved father, strong, comforting, and infinitely kind.

He picked her up with ease, holding her close for a moment. She buried her face in his shoulder, breathing in his familiar scent of earth and sun.

Setting her back down, his gaze drifted towards the kitchen table. His brow furrowed when he took in the blood-soaked scene, the wounded hare, the discarded arrow and bandages.

A soft smile touched his lips. ”You brought another wounded soul back home, my angel?” He chuckled, ruffling her hair. ”My sweet daughter, always so full of kindness. You’ve the softest heart.”

He stepped closer, examining the rabbit. Its breathing was shallow but steadier now. He reached for the discarded arrowhead, his expression hardening before turning the object over in his rough, farmer’s hands.

”Wife…” he called, his voice suddenly serious. ”Look at this. The arrowhead… do you recognize the make?”

The matured woman joined him, wiping her hands on an apron. She studied the crude metal point carefully, brow creasing in concern.

”I think so…” she murmured, her voice tense. ”This material, the craftsmanship… it’s not from an ordinary village hunter, nor our guards.” She met her husband’s worried gaze. ”I’ve treated many arrow wounds, seen the marks they leave. This… this is something different.”

”Yeah,” her father agreed, his tone grim. ”Definitely not ours. Not from any neighboring village either.”

He looked down at the arrowhead once more, a flicker of old, painful memories passing through his eyes.

”Something’s happening,” he declared, his voice dropping low, carrying a weight the little girl didn’t understand.

She climbed up onto a stool to peer at the strange piece of metal. ”It’s just an arrow, father. How do you know something’s happening?” she asked innocently, reaching a curious finger towards the sharp tip.

Her father gently intercepted her hand before it could touch the dangerous metal. His large, calloused hand engulfed hers.

”Daughter…” he began, his voice heavy. ”I’m just a farmer, true… But before that, I saw wars.” He paused, looking past her, lost in a distant, shadowed memory. ”I’ve seen the tools of war, the savagery…” He squeezed her hand gently. ”Weapons like this… they don’t belong in peaceful places like our village.”

His gaze returned to the arrowhead in his hand, then swept the tranquil countryside visible through the window. His voice became low murmur. ”Unless…”

The silence that followed was long and heavy, thick with dreadful anticipation. The little girl, sensing the sudden shift in the air, held her breath and waited. Her mother and father stood frozen, both staring at the seemingly innocuous piece of metal as if it were a harbinger of doom. Outside, a crow cawed mournfully.

The peaceful moment shattered like glass when the kitchen door burst open, crashing violently against the wall. A man tumbled into the room, his eyes wide in terror, breathing ragged gasps before catching himself on the table edge.

”Ethan!” he gasped, locking eyes with the girl’s father. ”They’re coming! They’re killing people at the village gate! You have to run!”

The neighbor, whose name was lost to the girl’s panicked memories, wore an expression of pure, unadulterated fear. He grabbed her father’s shoulder, shaking it desperately.

”Ethan, quick! Grab your wife and daughter and RUN! They’ll be here any second!”

The man’s hand tightened around the crude arrowhead he still held. The dread he’d voiced moments ago coalesced into chilling certainty. ”Who? What happened?” he demanded, urgency cracking his voice.

”NO TIME!” the neighbor screamed, already backing towards the doorway he’d burst through, his head swiveling wildly, expecting the enemy to materialize behind him. ”Just go! Get out now!”

Before Ethan could ask anything more, a sickening thwip sound cut through the air. The neighbor’s words choked off in wet gurgle. His body jerked violently, and he staggered forward, collapsing heavily into his arms.

”No…” Ethan whispered in disbelief, catching his neighbor. He gently lowered the man to the kitchen floor. His neighbor’s face was a mask of pain and terror. A feathered shaft protruded from the center of his back, soaking his shirt crimson.

The neighbor’s lips moved in silent gasp. A single word bubbled forth on a spray of blood: ”…run…” It was a dying whisper. Then light faded from his eyes. He was gone.

Ethan stared at the dead man in his arms, wave of cold horror crashing over him. The reality hit hard – this was war. And it had come to their quiet village.

Across the room, Ethan’s wife let out a strangled cry, pressing her hands to her mouth in shock and horror. The little girl clung to her mother’s legs, burying her face against the skirt, trembling violently as tears streamed down her cheeks. The terror was absolute, palpable, choking the air.

Ethan gently lowered his dead neighbor’s body down, his face set in grim determination. He stood up, grabbing the heavy hoe he’d been using earlier, its edge still caked with soil.

”We have to go! NOW!” The wife cried, her voice trembling, desperate and urgent. She grabbed her daughter’s hand tightly, pulling the trembling child closer.

Ethan moved to the doorway, peering cautiously out. The sounds of chaos, distant screams, the clash of metal, twang of bows filled the air. His expression turned ashen.

”It’s too late,” he said quietly, the weight of the words crushing. He turned back to face his wife. ”They’re already in the village.”

His wife let out a choked sob, gripping their daughter even tighter. Ethan’s gaze softened at his little girl, her face pale and tear-streaked, clutching her mother. ”Hide,” his voice low but fierce. ”Take our daughter and hide. I’ll stall them.”

He held the hoe like a weapon, testing its weight. It was pathetic against what he knew was coming, but it was all he had.

”NO!” his wife gasped, horror dawning anew. ”You’ll be killed!”

Ethan gave her a sad, tender smile, one filled with all the love and regret in the world. ”I know,” he said simply. ”Then let my sacrifice give you a chance.” His eyes locked onto hers. ”Take her to the cellar. Go. NOW.”

Before she could protest again, he turned and rushed out the back door into the encroaching nightmare.

The little girl, overwhelmed with confusion and terror, clung tighter to her mother. ”M-Mother? What’s happening? Why did he run away?”

Her mother, fighting back hysterical sobs, knelt down. She cupped the girl’s tear-streaked face gently, forcing a trembling smile onto her lips.

”S-shh, it’s alright, my darling,” she whispered, her voice breaking, tears still unshed. ”We’re going to play a very special game of hide and seek. Just you and me, okay?”

She took a shuddering breath, trying desperately to sound calm and reassuring. ”You remember where our secret cellar door is? The one behind the flour bin in the pantry? That’s your hiding spot. You go there and hide, really, really quietly. And I’m going to count!”

Her mother’s hands moved to the girl’s shoulders, giving her a little shake for emphasis. ”Don’t come out until it’s completely silent outside, or until I come to find you and say the special words. Remember? Our little secret.”

The girl nodded mutely, choking back her own sobs.

”Good girl,” the mother whispered, pressing a fierce, loving kiss onto her daughter’s forehead. ”Now, hide! Be quiet as a little mouse!” She gave her daughter a gentle push towards the pantry door.

The girl, legs shaking, ran towards the dark room, casting one last terrified look back at her mother before disappearing behind the shelves.
