Chapter 259: Chapter 259: storm in East Junction

By the time they reached East Junction, the easy warmth of the morning had disappeared beneath the demands of the project.

Vivienne stepped out of the vehicle with her folder in hand, already scanning the first business on their schedule.

The afternoon passed quickly.

They met with the owners and staff of the participating establishments, reviewed the storage arrangements, and confirmed that the surplus collected over the previous two weeks had been properly separated and recorded.

Vivienne handled the project discussions.

Damian handled the coordination that turned those plans into something workable on the ground.

He spoke with the business owners about closing times, confirmed where the Foundation truck could stop without obstructing deliveries, and checked the procedures for recording each collection.

At every location, they went through the same essential process.

What had been prepared.

How much had been set aside.

Where it was being stored.

Who would sign for the collection.

How the Foundation would record the quantity received.

And how the goods would be transported afterward.

It was practical work.

Sometimes tedious.

But necessary.

For those hours, they fell naturally back into the rhythm they had established before everything between them had become complicated.

Vivienne led.

Damian coordinated.

When she needed clarification, he obtained it.

When he needed confirmation from a business owner, she supplied the relevant details.

There was no flirting.

No teasing.

No lingering touches.

Nothing that could distract them from what they had come there to accomplish.

By late afternoon, they had completed most of the scheduled visits.

There was only one remaining collection.

And that one was taking longer than expected.

The business had not yet closed.

The owner apologized repeatedly.

”We should have everything ready within the hour.”

Vivienne glanced at Damian.

He checked his phone.

”That should be fine.”

They waited.

An hour became nearly two.

By then, the sky had darkened considerably.

Rain began tapping against the windows.

Then it grew heavier.

The final collection was eventually completed, but the Foundation truck had also been delayed by the weather.

By the time everything was documented and loaded, it was well into the evening.

Vivienne stood beneath the awning, watching sheets of rain blur the road.

”We’re not going back tonight, are we?”

Damian looked toward the driver.

The driver shook his head.

”Not safely, sir.”

Damian looked at the road.

The rain was coming down hard enough that the headlights of passing vehicles were barely visible through it.

He exhaled.

”No.”

Vivienne hugged her folder against herself.

”Then I suppose we’re staying.”

The driver had already spoken with the Foundation coordinator.

The weather had deteriorated too quickly.

The road back to Saint Albion was still technically passable, but visibility was poor, and several sections farther out had already begun to flood.

”We’re staying,” Damian said.

Vivienne sighed.

”I really didn’t expect that.”

”Neither did I.”

She looked down at the folder in her hands.

They had been working since morning.

Business after business.

Storage rooms.

Collection records.

Closing times.

Delivery arrangements.

They had checked everything they could check.

The pilot was ready.

The actual collection had simply taken longer than expected, and the storm had done the rest.

Vivienne leaned back against the wall.

”Do you think Mrs. Lee is going to make us write another report about this?”

Damian smiled faintly.

”Probably.”

”Wonderful.”

She looked at him.

”At least we finished everything.”

”We did.”

There was a brief silence.

Then Vivienne looked back toward the rain.

”So we’re stuck in East Junction.”

”For tonight.”

She laughed softly.

”What are the chances?”

Damian looked at her.

”With you?”

Vivienne turned.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

She narrowed her eyes.

”You were about to say something.”

”I wasn’t.”

”You were.”

He smiled.

”Let’s find somewhere to stay before you start interrogating me.”

She laughed.

”Fine.”

They returned to the Foundation vehicle.

The Foundation staff had already begun arranging accommodation. There weren’t many suitable hotels in East Junction, but there was one respectable establishment near the town center that could accommodate them.

The driver started the vehicle.

Vivienne settled into her seat.

For the first time all day, there was nothing left for them to do.

No business owner waiting.

No forms to check.

No schedule to follow.

Just rain.

And the strange knowledge that they were going to spend the night in the same town.

Damian looked out the window.

He should have been thinking about the project.

Instead, his mind wandered somewhere else.

I’m staying in East Junction with Vivienne.

He immediately stopped himself.

That didn’t mean anything.

It was simply an unfortunate consequence of the weather.

They would get rooms.

They would sleep.

Tomorrow, they would finish whatever remained and return to campus.

Simple.

Normal.

He looked toward her.

Vivienne was staring out the window, watching the rain.

She looked strangely content.

Damian looked away again.

He had spent the entire morning telling himself not to hope.

Then lunch had happened.

The cheesecake.

Her fork.

The way she’d looked at him.

The way she’d continued teasing him afterward.

He had barely managed to regain control of himself.

And now he was going to spend the night in the same hotel as her.

He exhaled quietly.

This was going to be a very long night.

Beside him, Vivienne glanced over.

”Why are you sighing?”

Damian looked at her.

”I’m not.”

”You just did.”

”I’m tired.”

”Oh.”

She nodded.

Then smiled.

”Me too.”

She settled back into her seat.

Damian looked ahead.

He didn’t know whether to be relieved or terrified.

Probably both.

--

The hotel appeared through the rain about twenty minutes later.

Damian looked up at the building through the windshield.

He said nothing.

It wasn’t terrible.

That was the kindest thing he could think of.

The hotel was clean and respectable, but it was clearly a local establishment rather than one of the luxury properties he and Vivienne were accustomed to.

For East Junction, it was probably one of the better options available.

For either of them, it was decidedly ordinary.

The driver pulled beneath the covered entrance.

Damian stepped out first and opened Vivienne’s door.

They entered the lobby.

It was warm and dry, with polished wooden floors, a modest reception desk, and several upholstered chairs arranged around a low table.

The Foundation had already arranged their accommodation.

The receptionist smiled.

”Good evening. The Foundation contacted us earlier. We have two rooms reserved under the university.”

”Thank you,” Damian said.

The receptionist checked the details.

”I’m afraid the rooms are on opposite ends of the corridor.”

Damian’s expression tightened slightly.

He glanced around the lobby.

This was fine.

It was an emergency.

They weren’t here for comfort.

They weren’t here for—

He stopped that thought immediately.

Two rooms.

That was exactly what they needed.

The receptionist handed him the room information.

”One room is on the fourth floor, and the other is on the opposite wing.”

Damian looked toward Vivienne.

She was staring at the rain outside.

Then she turned back.

Her eyes moved between him and the receptionist.

A mischievous little smile appeared.

”Damian...”

He looked at her.

”What?”

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

”I don’t really want to stay alone.”

He stared at her.

She continued, her expression becoming innocently serious.

”This place is unfamiliar. It’s late. And we’re nowhere near campus.”

She glanced toward the rain.

”I don’t feel particularly safe being all the way on the other side by myself.”

Damian considered it.

She wasn’t wrong.

East Junction wasn’t exactly a tourist destination.

And with the storm outside, having her alone in another part of the hotel wasn’t particularly appealing.

”You’re right.”

Vivienne blinked.

She had expected him to tease her.

Instead, he turned toward the receptionist.

”Do you have a suite?”

Vivienne’s eyes widened.

The receptionist checked the system.

”We do have one larger suite available. Two bedrooms, with a shared sitting room.”

Damian nodded.

”That will do.”

Vivienne stared at him.

He looked at her.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

She quickly smiled.

”That’s fine.”

Very fine.

Inside, however, she was thinking:

He actually agreed.

She had been teasing him.

She hadn’t expected him to take her seriously.

Now she couldn’t exactly take it back without making the whole thing strange.

The receptionist handed Damian the key card.

”Fourth floor.”

”Thank you.”

They walked toward the elevator.

Vivienne glanced sideways at him.

”So we’re sharing a suite.”

”It’s safer.”

”I know.”

She smiled.

”That’s why I suggested it.”

Damian nodded.

”Exactly.”

He sounded completely reasonable.

Almost too reasonable.

Vivienne hid another smile.

The elevator doors opened.

They stepped inside.

Damian looked at the floor indicator.

He told himself again that this was nothing.

An emergency.

A practical solution.

Two bedrooms.

A sitting room.

There was absolutely nothing romantic about it.

Nothing.

Still, when the elevator doors opened and they stepped into the corridor, he found himself wondering what the suite would look like.

And, irritatingly, another part of his mind supplied an entirely different picture.

One that involved Vivienne.

One that he immediately pushed away.

Stop.

This was not some romantic escape.

It was a storm.

They were stranded.

That was all.

The suite door opened.

Damian stepped inside.

He looked around.

His expression changed almost imperceptibly.

Vivienne noticed immediately.

She walked past him and looked around too.

The suite was clean.

Comfortable enough.

But not particularly luxurious.

The furniture was tasteful but old-fashioned.

The sofa was perfectly serviceable.

The television was smaller than what either of them would normally have in their own homes.

The room was spacious, but there was nothing extravagant about it.

Vivienne turned toward him.

”You don’t like it?”

Damian looked at her.

”I didn’t say that.”

”You made a face.”

”I did not.”

”You did.”

She laughed.

”It’s not that bad.”

She walked farther into the sitting room.

”It’s clean.”

Damian gave her a tight smile.

”That’s certainly something.”

Vivienne laughed again.

”Poor Damian.”

He raised an eyebrow.

”What?”

”You’re suffering.”

”I’m not suffering.”

”You look like you’re suffering.”

He looked around the suite once more.

”It’ll be fine.”

Vivienne smiled.

”See? You’re already recovering.”

Damian shook his head.

She didn’t understand.

And perhaps that was for the best.

Because the problem wasn’t the hotel.

The problem was that some irrational part of him had already imagined what a night alone with Vivienne might feel like.

Not here.

Not under these circumstances.

Not like this.

He had never actually expected it to happen.

And now it had.

He looked at her again.

Vivienne was examining the room with mild amusement, apparently satisfied as long as it was clean and comfortable.

Damian swallowed.

Two bedrooms.

He reminded himself.

Two bedrooms.

That was what mattered.

The rest of his imagination could stay exactly where it belonged.

In his head.

For now.
