The Devil Does Not Need to Be Defeated

Chapter 285: Resolved Grudge

”————”

A deathly silence covered the entire area.

With Vask at the head, all the nobles and knights looked up at the black dragon flapping its wings in midair. All of them were utterly stunned and flabbergasted, their faces utterly drained of blood.

Just a second ago, they were in pursuit of that dragon. They considered it nothing more than some goods that were already in their pockets, chatting about how theyʼre going to use its parts.

But now, their minds were completely empty of thoughts. All that was left was incomprehension and slowly thickening terror.

It canʼt be helped. The Dragon Fear truly was far too powerful, far too terrifying.

The dragon that was obviously on its last legs as it struggled and ran away in pain just a bit ago now not only looked completely healthy, but also mighty beyond measure. It was even more terrifying than it was when they had first entered the depths of the Canyon and it was crouched down next to the magic spring.

This is especially true given that they can see the rising violence and killing intent in its enormous draconic eyes.

The aura of violence and killing intent made everyone there shake uncontrollably.

This includes Vask as well.

(Why!? Why did it turn out this way!?)

At this moment, Vask didnʼt dare to move a single muscle. His face was stark pale as he madly screamed in his mind.

Although he didnʼt know just what had happened, it was obvious that this dragon had escaped the effects of the ritual as well as the magic power and flesh of the refining demons that it had been resisting with all its might. It had completely recovered back to its original state.

No, it wasnʼt just a recovery back to its original state.

That presence, that magic power. It was obviously even stronger than it was before.

(Just what happened!?)

Vask madly roared out in his mind.

Unfortunately for him, heʼll never know the answer to that question. The black dragon before it had not only undergone a metamorphosis, but had also acknowledged a master, received a name, and gained the recognition of the Lord of Dragons.

Thus…

”Run!!!”

Vask madly screamed out.

The sound of that scream led the inner fear of everyone there to explode out.

”Q-quick! Run away!”

”Run for it!”

”Knights!”

”Protect me, quick!”

The nobles have gone mad. They ran for their lives while shouting with all they had.

The knights were no different. By now, none of them bothered to protect those nobles anymore. Every single one of them were busying running for their own lives. None of them had so much a thought of trying to resist.

But, can they really escape?

Thatʼs obviously a no.

”Boom!”

The dragon in midair breathed out a blazing hot blast of Dragon Breath at the ground.

”Bang!”

The earth exploded out in response.

The unbeatable Dragon Breath struck the ground, exploded out, and turned everywhere it passed into completely scorched earth.

The temperature of the air rapidly rose.

Violent waves of magic power got blown about.

The people overtaken by the Dragon Breath werenʼt even able to let out a scream before they were utterly vaporized by the Dragon Breath without leaving even a corpse.

”Roar!”

Yulin immediately let out a joyous roar, flapped her wings, shifted her body, and immediately chased after those humans that were running for their lives.

Dragon Breaths repeatedly fell from the sky, burning away everything on the ground, including each and every single noble and knight, casually reaping their lives.

In just a short while, in a certain corner of the Canyon, flames illuminated the skies and draconic roars filled the air. Explosions rang out over and over under a black dragonʼs Dragon Breath, slowly turning the place into a scene of hell.

”Cast defensive magic! Quickly!”

Vask, who was mixed in with the escaping crowd, screamed out at the people around him. It did manage to get some peopleʼs attention, make them stop, and get them to panicking start chanting the incantations for defensive magic.

However, before they could even finish chanting, blazing blasts of Dragon Breath once again fell from the sky, this time onto them.

An explosion rang out in tandem with screams, echoing in the air.

Vask took advantage of this opportunity to hurriedly run away without looking back.

Defensive magic?

Something like that is worth less than paper against the Dragon Breath known to be able to pierce all defenses.

Vask clearly knew this already, so he never had any hopes that a bunch of defensive spells that arenʼt even at the level of high class magic could possibly block the black dragonʼs breath. He just wanted to use those people as fodder to buy himself just a few more moments to escape.

After all, when someone is chanting magic, they will end up causing reactions in magical power. Thus, the black dragonʼs attention will definitely be drawn by the magic power and thus attack there first.

Vask was counting on that reaction. Thus, while he continuously ran, he also shouted out to people around him to trick them into drawing Yulinʼs attention and firepower.

It has to be said, this was indeed somewhat effective.

At the very least, Yulin indeed had her attention drawn by the waves of magic power, so she attacked in those directions first without even thinking and sent all of those pitiful sacrifices to hell.

Vask also did indeed manage to get some distance using that opportunity. He even managed to jump off a cliff in the hopes that he could escape Yulinʼs line of sight and that it wonʼt notice the escape of one insignificant human.

Sheʼs a king of demonic beasts after all, a true dragon, so it shouldnʼt particularly notice a single insignificant lone survivor, right?

Vask could only place all his hopes on this single idea. Thatʼs why he jumped off a cliff without any hesitation. Itʼs all to leave the dragonʼs line of sight as quickly as possible.

”Ah!”

”Save me!”

”No!”

”Gahh!”

Screams from the nobles and knight who were working with Vask echoed in the air into Vaskʼs ears.

Even so, Vask had long since ceased to care about them anymore.

”Snap!”

The noble who jumped off the cliff slammed heavily into the ground beneath the cliffs. His legs loudly snapped under the impact.

”Aaaahhhhhh…!”

The intense pain made the ruthless man let out a scream of pain despite himself. He collapsed onto the ground, unable to get back up.

Vask could tell without even especially looking. His legs were likely done for.

However, Vask had no room to care about any of that. He just forcefully bore with the pain as he crawled on the ground toward in the direction of behind rock under the cliff.

He had to find somewhere to hide himself.

In the current situation, only by hiding will he have a chance of escaping the dragonʼs pursuit.

”Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!”

His pitiful situation made Vask tear up involuntarily. His heart was filled with madness and hate.

”I still havenʼt killed that woman yet, so how can I possibly die here…!?”

Vask desperately supported himself with such thoughts. All he could ask for now is to escape this disaster before him.

So long as he can escape this disaster…

”Some day, Iʼll make all o you pay for it…!”

Be it the person or the dragon, theyʼll all pay.

Vask just continued to repeat that thought madly in his mind.

Unfortunately for him, he wonʼt have that chance.

At some point, the screams and explosions have stopped.

Instead, the ground shook behind Vask as if something huge had landed there.

Vaskʼs pitifully crawling form froze.

His expressions were also frozen.

”Aha… Hahaha…”

After a moment, Vask started laughing.

Although, while laughing, he was also crying.

He used the last bit of strength he had, arduously turning his body to look behind him.

There, the dragon had its wings spread out as it looked down on him from above. Its gaze was still so very cold, so very cruel.

”You damnable beast…!”

Finally, Vask let out an enraged roar.

What answered him as a blast of blazing dragon breath.

”Boom!”

Flames and an explosion simultaneously appeared beneath the cliffs.

The black dragon Yulin then flew out and headed back in the direction in came from, having successfully completed her goals.
