Primordial Villain with a Slave Harem

Chapter 1868: The King’s Gambit

The crystal stayed lit, and Tharion sat holding it while a man he could not see looked at his wife. A garden door opened on the far end of the call. He knew what that sound was worth before it finished.

When Zaren returned, the worry had gone out of his voice. What remained was gentle, and final.

”Tharion. Duskmere’s friendship is not in question. It never will be.” Zaren drew an audible breath. ”But an audit is a small thing for a house with nothing to hide, old friend. Cooperate fully, and it passes over you like weather.” The warmth came back, gentler than before. ”Give my regards to Ardent.”

Pleasantries followed. Tharion heard himself supplying his half of them from somewhere outside his own body. Then the light left the crystal, and the study was quiet.

The capital had sent nothing: no letter, no courier, no whispered instruction.

Calienne Valorian had been promised to Duskmere before she was born, married to its duke when she came of age, and had loved him honestly for all their centuries since, filling his halls and remaining, through every year of it, her father’s daughter.

She had worked out what these days were on her own. The whole kingdom had heard. So when Ravenshade’s crystal lit in her husband’s study, she went out to the garden, checked on the roses, and came back for him.

That was the entire operation.

A daughter, placed in the enemy’s house four hundred years before he would need her, so loved by its duke that her lightest wish outweighed another duke’s warning, waiting through court season after court season for the one afternoon her father would need a door held shut.

Alexios had spent no soldier, no coin, not even a sentence of instruction. The ally Tharion had spent his tenure building left for a walk among winter roses, and the woman who charmed him away went on that walk with a full heart, doing right by the two men she loved most.

Zaren never learned that anything had happened at all. He simply, honestly, wanted to see the roses with his wife.

...

In the Ravenshade study, the crystal was still in Tharion’s hand.

”ZAREN!”

The scream tore out of him at the dead crystal, at a volume no Ravenshade study had ever heard, and his chest was heaving before it ended.

”Cowards! COWARDS, ALL OF YOU!” The crystal went across the study. It took a framed map off the wall, and both came down together, glass and crystal and the western marches. ”A lifetime of friendship, and you fold for a WALK IN A GARDEN?!”

The crash brought a guard’s face into the door. Whoever it was read the room and withdrew without orders.

The duke stood over the wreckage, breath sawing in and out, fists opening and closing on nothing.

Then he laughed. One short bark, wrong from the first note, and it frightened him more than the audit had.

Morgana. The Ravenshades sold her to the crown and called it, privately, the finest trade of his tenure.

Ravenshade blood on the throne, a queen’s ear in the family, royal heirs of their own line. They had walked out of that negotiation certain they had skinned a weak king desperate to buy peace from the house that could unmake him.

He turned the trade over now, and it showed him its other face.

The crown had bought Ravenshade’s blood out of Ravenshade, and let him call it a queen. His sister lived in the capital, belonged to its new order, publicly, and not one line of her hand had reached this study in years.

The finest trade of his tenure had moved his house’s heart behind the enemy’s walls, and he had been proud of the price.

Calienne. He had counted that marriage as tribute: the king’s eldest daughter, paid into the bloc’s soundest house to buy its quiet. A frightened man appeasing his betters, marriage by marriage. He had called it a concession won.

His hands had begun to shake. He watched them do it as if they belonged to the chancellor.

She was a garrison, promised before she was born, installed with a wedding, held in reserve through an entire honest marriage, and spent this afternoon, all of her, on one walk among winter roses.

The weak king had aimed her at this exact day before she drew her first breath.

And the succession. Felicity, and the deal that...

The thought arrived at a door, and Tharion did not open it. He turned from it bodily and crossed the study, because a man in motion could be doing something other than finishing thoughts.

His whole tenure at that desk, he had negotiated against a dying man and won every single session, concession after concession carried home in triumph.

He stopped above the wreck of the western marches, glass crunching under his boot, and could not name one prize the old man had not placed in his hand.

Every victory of his tenure had been handed to him across that desk, wrapped, by a man who wanted him to carry it home and be proud of it. And he had been proud. He had set each one down in this study like a trophy, session after session, the sharpest head his house had ever put in front of a king.

The shame came slower than the fear had, and it went deeper, because the fear was about the house and this was about him. He had been finished this afternoon, on a schedule, by a man who had stopped needing to think about him centuries ago.

The weakness had been aim. The dying had been patience.

Alexios Valorian wrote the letters that mattered in his own hand, warmly, exactly as Tharion did. Only the mail differed.

His own fondest letter of the decade had gone into a fire three days too late. The king’s had been arriving centuries early, every one of them, since before his enemies knew there was a war.

”CHANCELLOR!”

The doors opened on a man already braced.

”Duskmere’s letters. Every page that house has ever sent this study, on this desk by morning.”

He was moving along the map wall as he spoke, straightening frames that were already straight. ”The correspondence ledgers with them. Who wrote, when, carried by whom, answered how. And the same for every house that has gone quiet on me this week!”

”My lord, that is... decades of correspondence.”

”Then light more candles!”

The Duke of Ravenshade had begun auditing his own friendships.

...

The last report of the day came up from the capital in a merchant’s cipher, from the one hand down there that still answered him.

Tharion decoded it himself, alone at the desk, the house asleep around him.

’The commission of audit answers to a woman. Young. Red eyes. She carries no house name, and none can be produced by any inquiry at any price. The royal archive opens to her at any hour, on her voice alone. The king defers to her in all matters of the audit. No further particulars available.’

Tharion read it three times.

”Red eyes,” he read aloud, to the empty study. ”No house name. A girl.” He turned the page over, as if the real report might be hiding on the back. ”This is what I pay for? A DESCRIPTION?!”

It gave him nothing. A young woman with no house was nobody: some crown creature pulled out of a gutter and dressed in authority for the work, a tool and nothing more.

Nobodies did not audit great houses.

”And yet the archive opens at your voice,” he told the cipher, his thumb pressing a crease into it. ”And yet the king defers. To you. Who ARE you?!”

The paper declined to answer.

The oldest house in Vraven stood under audit, dukes’ letters went unanswered across the realm, and at the center of all of it sat a red-eyed girl with no name that money could buy.

He fed the cipher to the fire and watched it curl. Then he took fresh paper, the good stock, and wrote one line in his own hand, pressing hard enough that the last stroke tore through.

’Her name. Whatever it costs.’

He sealed it with the raven.
