Primordial Villain with a Slave Harem

Chapter 1820: Through the Secret Passages

The ward tasted his oath, found it good, and the black slab swung inward on silent hinges, a hundred tonnes moving like a garden gate.

”That should not have worked,” Elowen said. Her voice had gone up half an octave since the palace. ”The wards are keyed to the... Oh...”

The deep road ran wide and true, its floor grooved smooth by cart wheels, cold lamps of dwarven make still burning a patient blue along the walls.

Twice the wide way ended in purposeful ruin, whole junctions dropped with engineering precision, and twice Thorgar turned without pausing into narrower passages faced in royal seal-stone, patrol routes built for crown business alone, untouched.

”They dropped the trade roads...” Elowen whispered, running her eyes over the sheared rock. ”They prepared for this. So how...”

”They prepared for everything within their reach,” the dead general replied, the same flat verdict he’d once handed green recruits. ”Every gate a living dwarf ever held a key to must’ve been re-keyed already. But the crown’s own passages take the king’s oath to re-key.” A stretch of gravel silence. ”They don’t have one. Coronating a new ruler will take three days at the least.”

The final battle lay only a couple dozen hours behind the mountain.

With its military crippled and its capital in chaos, manning every forgotten patrol route was beyond the dwarven nation’s current strength. The few patrols that did wander near were never met: Quinlan read their footsteps through the stone with his earth magic from a truly unfair distance, and strolled his party down whichever fork stood empty.

The traps were the greater danger, and the dead were the answer to those too.

Ward-glyphs slept in the seal-stone, pressure-seams waited under a year of dust, listening-runes lay strung to wake a barracks at the wrong tread.

But the three who walked point had known where most were located, and the few hastily added defenses were read without failure.

Just like that, they passed under the roots of the elven nation and into the bones of the mountain that the dwarves had made their capital all those years ago, when the alliance was formed. The migration to the previously empty mountain had been the gesture of the dwarven king who ruled at the time, made toward his wife, the elf queen he loved.

Somewhere past the fourth door, the air changed. Warmer. Mineral. Smoke and hot metal.

Kaelira’s breath went shallow.

Sound arrived next, distant and rhythmic through the stone, a heartbeat of hammers that grew with every step. Then light: a red-gold glow bleeding around the last turning of the road, the color of industry, the color of a working forge multiplied by hundreds.

”The royal smithy of Elvardia,” Thorgar said. ”Well, I suppose I should call it the smithy of the dwarven people now...”

After all, Myrasyn had already declared she considered the Elvardian Alliance null and void before the entire Elvardian army.

...

The hall was a cathedral built for fire.

It dropped three tiers into the mountain and climbed five in vaults overhead, and every level of it worked. Forge-hearths stood in ranked rows like organ pipes, chimney-shafts drawing their smoke up through channels cut in the living rock, water racing in stone troughs between anvil stations.

Hundreds of dwarves moved through the red-gold light with the unconscious choreography of people who had done this their whole lives, and the sound of it all, hammers, bellows, steam, and shouted measurements, filled the vaults like weather.

The sealed door in the hall’s east wall had not opened in over a year.

It opened now.

”The east door...?” someone said from a middle tier, over the groan of hinges no one had duty to oil anymore. ”That’s the crown’s door!”

Then the dead walked in, and the hall received its answer.

A hammer stopped mid-swing. Then a row of them. The silence spread outward across the hall the way frost spreads over glass, tier by tier, station by station, until the last bellows sighed out and the only sound left was the fires themselves.

”...General Thorgar?”

An old master near the east door said it. His beard was ash-grey and bound in the clasps of fifty years of rank, and the hammer in his hand sagged like it had suddenly remembered its own weight. ”Thorgar Emberhold. They sang our defeat yesterday...”

”They sang true, Dain,” Thorgar said.

Grief moved across the old master’s face, silent and total.

Around him, the word spread in whispers: the general, the general’s ghost, the pale fire. Somewhere on the second tier, a young smith made a sound like a swallowed sob. Every dwarf in the royal smithy knew that armor, and every dwarf in the royal smithy could see the cold flame wearing it.

Then Quinlan stepped through the door, and the temperature of the hall’s fear changed.

There was no herald this time, and none was needed.

A human two meters tall, in the company of elves, walking out of a sealed door with the honored dead at his heel.

The description had crossed the mountain long before the final battle took place, carried by survivors of his sieges into dwarven forts: the Primordial Villain. The one the elves called Holy Son. The one who had ended a war, a kingship, and the world’s old order in a single week.

Hammers came up across the hall the way a man grabs a railing when the floor tilts, hands finding the only solid thing they knew.

Masters stepped in front of apprentices. Apprentices, with the suicidal loyalty of the young, tried to step in front of their masters and were held.

And the dread came down on all of them.

He wasn’t doing anything. That was the horror of it.

He was just standing there, looking up at the vaulted tiers with mild interest, and the pressure of his existence rolled off him anyway, filling the hall the way deep water fills lungs.

The forge-heat thinned around him like the fires themselves were paying attention. On the nearest tier, a journeyman’s legs quit without permission and dropped him onto a bench. A pair of tongs slipped from someone’s grip and rang against the stone, obscenely loud, and nobody so much as glanced at it.

Old Dain locked his knees and stayed upright by pure spite, and it cost him everything he had.

”Stand down.” Thorgar’s voice rolled across the silence, flat as a shield wall. ”All of you. Stand down and hear me.”

”You serve him,” someone said from the tiers, half accusation, half prayer. ”General, you... you of all dwarves...”

”The war is over. Dwarven hegemony is over.” The dead commander’s pale eyes swept the hall he’d once guarded. ”We lost it, and not by any margin or stroke of fortune. We lost it the way a candle loses to winter, and I know, because I stood in the worst of it and it killed me.”

His voice never rose and never fell. ”The king who spent your sons and daughters sits frozen in his own failure and answers for it. That debt is his, and he pays it alone. Do not add your names to the list of people who drove the Villain to a cruel revenge like that. It’s over. So let it be over and make the most of it.”

The hall took that the way a body takes a blow it can’t return.

”He came here without an army,” Thorgar went on, quieter. ”Take a breath, and understand what that means. If he wanted this mountain broken, you would not have heard a door open.”

Elowen chose that moment to step through the door behind her charges, take up an escort position at the Holy Son’s flank, and level upon the assembled population of the royal smithy a look of such crystalline elven condescension that several dwarves physically braced.

Here it was, the look said. The conqueror who was worshipped at elven altars, with elven ladies on his arms and an elven guard at his side, come down at last to their holiest hall. Every rumor they’d heard of his favor of their race over the dwarven one stood confirmed in a single tableau.

The smiths waited for it. The sneer, the decree, the boot.

Quinlan finished his survey of the vaults, the tiered forges, the chimney-shafts breathing up through the mountain’s bones, and pointed at the great ranked hearths of the lowest tier.

”Twin-hearth stacks on a shared flue,” he said. ”How are you holding temper on the far hearths?”

Silence.
