Systembound: Rise of the Dronemancer [Book 1. Complete] / Systembound: Rise of Androxis [Book 2. Ongoing]

Carmen shook her head, her small frame trembling slightly despite the warm, managed air of the Inner District. ”No. I felt nothing. You just... you just stopped suddenly and then sank down to your knees. It looked like you were in agonizing pain. I thought you were having a seizure or... or something like that.”

”Something more for my ’shit-list’ to settle later, then...” he muttered, the words barely audible over the hum of the distant city. He caught himself quickly, remembering that he was still playing a very specific role for her. He forced a weary, mortal sigh. ”Something to worry about later. There is nothing I can do if I don’t know what it was.”

He took her hand again, his grip firm and possessive, and pulled her close to his side. As they continued their walk toward the massive gates, his eyes never rested. To any outside observer, he appeared casual—perhaps a bit tired from the day’s administrative burdens—but inside, he was a howling storm of fury and cold calculation.

`Everything was perfect.` He thought. His jaw tightening almost imperceptibly as they walked. `It took me so much time to figure out how she ticked, to find the right combination of logic and vulnerability to bypass her defenses. I was just beginning to play the victim card effectively. I had her empathy pinned down. Just to be interrupted by... whatever that psychic filth was.`

The muscles in his back coiled with suppressed rage as he forced his stride to remain measured and unhurried. He couldn’t let his frustration show; not now, when the ’Shepherd’ was supposed to be the only thing standing between Carmen and a world of chaos.

`I just hope that this interruption didn’t affect what I just achieved with her. No... wait.` He glanced down at Carmen out of the corner of his eye. She was clinging even closer to his arm now, her small frame pressing against him as if seeking protection from the very air itself. `Actually, I can use this. I can use this unknown threat to my advantage. A common enemy, an unseen predator... it only makes the Shepherd more necessary. She needs to feel that without me, she is prey.`

The thought was cold, sharp, and calculating—a predator recognizing that its prey’s fear was an instrument to be played with masterful, musical precision.

”It’s alright, Carmen,” he said, his voice carefully modulated into a smooth, reassuring tone that carried just enough weight to calm her without betraying the fury beneath. ”Just something unexpected. A glitch in the city’s integration, perhaps. Nothing I can’t handle.”

She nodded, the side of her head scraping against the expensive fabric of his coat as she leaned into him. ”Mhh~” she hummed, a small, soft sound of relief that signaled her surrender to his narrative.

They reached the massive black wall, a vertical horizon of seamless granite. The hidden gates slid open with a whisper of displaced air, triggered by an unseen force. They stepped through the threshold, leaving the silent, haunted luxury of the Inner District behind. As they entered the Outer City, the atmosphere changed instantly. The silence was replaced by a low, vibrating thrum of humanity.

But Searanox couldn’t stop thinking about the audacity of the event. Someone—or something—had not just interfered with his meticulously planned walk; they had attacked him right in the open, inside the heart of his own sovereign territory. The insult to his pride was as great as the physical pain had been.

They walked deeper into the Outer City. The further they descended into the lower residential tiers, the more lively—and increasingly chaotic—it became. The sterile, ghostly silence of the villas was replaced by the sound of distant shouting, and the heavy, humid press of thousands of people trying to find their footing in a new world.

As Searanox spotted a familiar-looking building that seemed out of place among the standard residential houses, he steered Carmen toward it. It was a utilitarian structure, blocky and functional, and even from a distance, it was clear that a crisis was brewing. A large, agitated crowd had gathered before its closed sliding doors, their movements jerky and frantic.

As they drew nearer, the voices of the people became a clear, biting cacophony of discontent.

They spoke of the promise of food that hadn’t arrived on their schedule. They spoke of the ’lies’ the System told them during the transition. They spoke of the crushing weight of the new laws that had been broadcast to them. Every time a self-appointed speaker shouted something against the city administration or the harshness of the new world, a raw, guttural roar of approval went up from the gathered crowd. These were the people Searanox had ’saved’ from the wastes—and their gratitude was already beginning to sour into entitlement.

”It’s a trick!” one man shouted, standing on the raised curb of the store’s entrance. ”They bring us here to work us to death in that Spire! Where is the food? Where is the ’paradise’ we were promised by the notifications?”

Searanox didn’t slow down. He didn’t even acknowledge the man. He tightened his grip on Carmen’s hand and pushed directly into the mass of bodies. The crowd was agitated—a sea of dirty clothes, unwashed hair, and desperate, hollow faces. Some people tried to shove back, their tempers flared by hunger, but as soon as they felt the cold, unyielding pressure of Searanox’s presence, they recoiled. A path began to open, carved not by polite request, but by the sheer, terrifying aura of the man in the dark coat.

As they reached the main doors of the building, the building recognized Searanox’s rank. The doors opened with a long, pneumatic hiss.

The murmur of the crowd reached a fever pitch of jealousy as they saw the two of them enter the restricted building. A ripple of angry whispers followed them into the interior as the doors slid shut once more, cutting off the noise of the mob like a guillotine.

The interior of this distribution center was far smaller and more cramped than the one they had just visited in the Inner District. Even with a quick, clinical glance, Searanox could see that the selection of available food was vastly more limited. There were no delicacies here, no imported wines or artisan chocolates. They strolled through the narrow aisles for a minute, the silence of the shop emphasizing the sterile, empty nature of the metal shelves.

”Can you see the difference, Carmen?” Searanox asked, his voice echoing slightly against the industrial walls. ”What do you notice about this place compared to the luxury we just left?”

”It’s the quality, Searanox,” she replied, her analytical mind immediately kicking into gear despite her lingering exhaustion. She stepped closer to one of the dispensers, scrolling through the basic nutritional options. ”And the selection is much smaller. The variety of fresh produce is non-existent. Compared to the other store... this is clearly designed for the masses, not the elite.”

”Exactly. This is a Bronze-ranked store,” he explained, his voice devoid of pity. ”Here, they get enough to survive and live a decent life. There are grains, protein, and clean water. No citizen will starve in this city; I have ensured the logistical backbone for that. But we humans are greedy creatures, Carmen. We always want more than just to survive. We want flavor, variety, and status. We always want what we don’t have or can’t have... And if we get it anyways, we want more still.”

He gestured toward the back of the shop, where the dispensers stood like silent, grey sentinels. ”And don’t call them the elite. Those in the inner ring would never truly hold up to that title. They are simply the ones who have proven themselves more useful than the rest.”

He looked around the empty store, his gaze lingering over the pitifully sparse selection. It was a stark reminder of the tiered reality he had constructed—a world where value was the only currency that mattered. Then, he turned to her, his expression softening into something more intimate, more predatory.

”Carmen, my dear, I have to apologize, but I must cut our ’date’ short,” he said. Before she could process the word, his hand reached out, cupping her cheek with surprising, warm gentleness. He leaned in, pulling her into a soft, lingering kiss.

Her dark eyes widened in shock as his lips touched hers. For a moment, the entire world—the System, the screaming crowds outside, the cold logic of Androxis—simply vanished into the heat of the moment. Her fingers instinctively dug into the heavy fabric of his sleeves, seeking purchase in a world that had suddenly gone tilted.

”D-Date?” she whispered against his lips when he finally moved a fraction away. A deep, burning flush of heat spread through her cheeks, contrasting sharply with the cool, recycled air of the store.

Searanox’s lips curled into a faint, knowing smirk. He didn’t offer an explanation. Instead, he pulled back from her completely and turned toward the main entrance. The sliding doors opened with a soft, mechanical hiss, revealing the darkening sky and the restless sea of people waiting outside.

Carmen stood alone in the center of the empty store for a long heartbeat, her face crimson and her eyes still wide with bewilderment. The word ’date’ echoed in her mind, a bizarrely normal concept in a world that had become a nightmare of stats and steel.

Searanox stepped out onto the curb in front of the building, his presence immediately drawing every eye in the plaza. He didn’t shout; he didn’t need to. He simply stood there, silhouetted against the internal lights of the distribution center, and the sheer weight of his presence caused the rowdy murmurs of the crowd to die down into a hushed, expectant silence.

”Greetings, people of Androxis,” he began. He placed his arm across his abdomen and gave a shallow, mocking half-bow that felt more like a challenge than a greeting. ”I am Searanox. You might have heard the name whispered in the streets or announced by the System.”

He straightened up, his height making him loom over the crowd of hundreds, if not a thousand, people. ”Before I leave and let one of my trusted guildmates answer your many questions, I want to say a few words to you directly.”

He let his gaze sweep over the crowd, meeting the eyes of the fearful, the angry, and the desperate. ”Androxis will provide you with protection from the outside world and the myriad threats you have faced over these last several days. You are safe here. But know this: this safety will not come for free. A city is a living thing; it needs resources to breathe, and you, as its citizens, are the ones who will provide those resources.”

He paused, letting the weight of the word resources sink into their minds.

”There will be two primary ways to earn your place among the citizens of this city,” he continued, his voice projecting with an unnatural clarity. ”The first is the path of the warrior. Venture into the Spire’s dungeons, face the monsters within, and clear them out. Those who bleed for the city will always be above.”

He waited a beat, watching the winces and the shudders of those who were clearly not fighters—the office workers and shopkeepers of the old world.

”The second path is to earn your living through your work. It doesn’t matter what you provide—labor, craft, administration—the city has a place for it. Just keep in mind that the System itself will be your competitor in almost everything you do. If you can do a job better or cheaper than the same System that brought this time upon us, then you have value. If you cannot... then you are a liability.”

His voice was clear and resonant, carrying easily to the very edges of the plaza.

”This emblem right here represents your contribution to Androxis,” he said, tapping the silver emblem resting on his chest. ”The city grants it based on your City-points. If you have questions about these ranks and the privileges they afford, you may seek out the reception desks in the Atrium of the inner tower.”

”In said tower, you can convert your hard-earned System currency into City-points,” he said, holding up a single silver coin. Its polished side caught the violet light of the overhead conduits, flashing brightly like a star in his palm. ”For each of these, I will give you points. Right now, I do not have the exact exchange rate finalized, as even I have been in Androxis for less than half a day. We are all learning the dimensions of this new world together.”

As he spoke, a strange phenomenon occurred. The gazes of the people in the crowd became distant, their eyes glazing over in unison. Searanox watched with a cold, predatory smile; he knew they were all reading a fresh System notification he had just triggered. The entire plaza was suddenly silent, a thousand people staring into a blue light that only they could see.
