SSS Awakening: Conquering Worlds with My Cupid System

The mountains had always belonged to silence.

This was not the peaceful kind that calmed the heart, but the ancient silence that existed long before men learned to speak and long after they had vanished into dust. There, where the snow never melted, and the winds howled like starving wolves, a young giantess hunted beneath an endless white sky.

Her name was Skadi, the daughter of Thjazi, the daughter of the greatest hunter among the jötnar.

She was born where life itself fought to survive. Every breath stung the lungs. Every step through the snow was a battle against the mountain. Wolves roamed freely, bears slept beneath glaciers, and avalanches claimed those foolish enough to believe the peaks could be conquered.

That was the world that raised her.

While other children learned songs, Skadi learned the language of footprints pressed into fresh snow. While others played games, she learned to loose an arrow through the eye of a wolf before it even realized it had been hunted.

The mountains shaped her into something cold, but not heartless. Simply unyielding. Her father watched proudly as she grew into a huntress whose spear was as sharp as the wind, whose arrows never missed, and whose skis crossed frozen valleys faster than any horse.

To Skadi, Thjazi wasn’t merely a father. He was her teacher, her hero, her mountain. Then... the gods killed him. The news reached the frozen peaks like a blizzard.

Thjazi had challenged Asgard after kidnapping Idunn, the keeper of the golden apples that preserved the youth of the gods. The gods retaliated.

Loki tricked him. The Æsir cornered him. And together, they slew the mighty giant. When Skadi heard the tale, she did not scream; she did not cry. She sharpened her axe, strung her bow, fastened her skis, and walked.

Across mountains, across frozen lakes, across forests buried beneath snow, she headed straight toward Asgard. The gods saw her coming from miles away, a lone figure clad in furs and armed for war.

The daughter of Thjazi had arrived, and even Odin prepared for battle, yet when Skadi finally stood before the gates of Asgard, she did not attack.

”I have come,” she declared, her voice carrying across the halls of the gods, ”to demand payment for my father’s blood.”

The gods exchanged uneasy glances. Justice, not vengeance. That was what she sought, and so they agreed. The first condition amused them.

”You may choose a husband from among us,” Odin declared. ”But only by looking at our feet.”

The gods lined themselves behind a curtain, and only their feet remained visible. Skadi smiled to herself. Everyone knew Baldr was the most handsome of all the gods. Surely...

Surely his feet would be as beautiful as the rest of him. She searched carefully. One pair stood above the rest, perfect, strong, and graceful.

”I choose those.”

Laughter echoed through the hall. The curtain opened, and standing before her was not Baldr. It was Njord, the sea god. She had chosen the wrong man. Still, a promise was a promise.

She married him. For a while, they tried. Njord loved the sea, the sound of gulls, and the scent of salt carried by the wind. His home overlooked endless blue waters.

Skadi hated every moment of it. The cries of seabirds robbed her of sleep. The damp air clung to her skin. The ocean felt wrong.

So they moved to her mountain home. Now it was Njord’s turn to suffer. Every night wolves howled through the valleys. Snow buried the paths. The cold seeped into his bones.

Nine nights by the sea. Nine nights in the mountains. Again and again. Neither could endure the other’s world. One morning, without anger, without hatred, they simply accepted the truth.

Love alone could not bridge the distance between ocean and mountain. They parted.

Skadi returned home. The mountains welcomed her like an old friend. The wolves recognized her footsteps. The snow embraced her once more. She hunted alone, not because she feared company, but because solitude suited her soul.

Generations passed. Kings rose. Kingdoms fell. Yet travelers crossing the northern mountains continued telling stories. Stories of a woman gliding across the snow faster than the wind itself. Of arrows that pierced beasts before they could roar. Of white wolves bowing their heads as she walked past. Of blizzards that obeyed her voice.

Some called her the Huntress, others, the Queen of Winter. Years later, the gods captured Loki for his countless crimes. Many demanded his death, but Skadi remembered something else. She remembered her father.

It had been Loki’s trickery that had led Thjazi to his death. Execution was too merciful. Instead she watched as Loki was bound deep beneath the earth. Above him, she suspended a venomous serpent.

Drop, after drop, after drop, its poison fell endlessly upon his face. It was not for a day or for a year, but until the end of ages. It was not cruelty. It was justice.

The mountains had taught Skadi one lesson above all others. Every action carved its mark into the world like footsteps in fresh snow. Some disappeared. Others remained forever, and so did the name of Skadi.

The huntress, the giantess, the lady of snow-covered peaks, the woman who stood before gods without fear. The embodiment of winter itself.

For while fire consumed, and storms raged, winter simply waited, patient, silent, and certain. Because in the end, even the strongest flame would one day surrender to the cold.

And she was telling this story to a young girl seated in front of her.

Chloe had seen the Ice Empress, but the being in front of her was the true one. She was tall, about ten feet tall, with blue skin like ice, long white hair that fell in a single braid up to her knees, and cold, piercing blue eyes.

Her expression was cold as she told her story, a story of frost and a song of ice. Her voice was unusually serene for a giantess, but that wasn’t what mattered. What mattered was what she was going to say next.

”Therefore, my little heir, do you wish to continue my legacy?”

”...” Chloe stared at her blankly, unsure of what to say. She was still trying to come to terms with her sitting in front of a goddess.

Skadi smiled briefly, her eyes glowing with an amused light.

”I see you’ve accomplished one of the things I never could. You found love, and that too from the heir of one of the most powerful conceptual beings in the universe.

You are really blessed. But to be able to stand beside him, you must accept my gift in all its fullness.”

”Will I change?” Chloe asked as she remembered how cold she felt in the cave. She remembered how she almost became an unfeeling person.

”You will and will not. If it’s strength and power, you will have it all in full. If it’s your character, your essence, and your true being... then no.”

Chloe smiled happily at that, but Skadi wasn’t done.

”There is a Yes in it, though.”

”What is it?”

”You will only show warmth to people you love.”

”That is enough.”

”I know.”

Skadi smiled for the second time since meeting her, and Chloe did the same. Then right in front of Chloe, Skadi shrank to about 6 feet and hugged her.

”You will achieve great things, Chloe.”

Skadi transformed into snowflakes and drifted around her. Chloe felt a biting cold seep into her, only to quickly transform into warmth. The remaining snowflakes drifted into her palms and transformed into a small, white creature.

And the world turned blank.
