Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 406: Chapter 406: Repaying Kindness

After the two left, the person hiding in the shadows, crouching low, hurriedly and somewhat frantically made their escape.

She had just been passing by and, feeling a sudden urge to urinate, was looking for a secluded spot to relieve herself. Unexpectedly, she overheard such a private matter.

For a moment, she was so panicked she didn’t know what to do.

She ran all the way to her sister’s ward in the infirmary, her heart still racing.

Gai Fangfang saw that her sister was restless. ”Sis, what’s wrong?”

Gai Yanyan looked at her younger sister. She didn’t dare mention what she had just encountered. Her sister is already troubled enough, she thought. I mustn’t add to her worries. ”It’s nothing,” she finally said. ”I’m just worried about you.”

When Gai Fangfang heard her sister’s words, she didn’t overthink it and simply replied softly, ”This time, I’ll listen to our family.”

Gai Yanyan suddenly became excited. ”Really? You’ve made up your mind?”

Gai Fangfang nodded. ”Ever since we got married, they’ve frequently found excuses to take the things our family gave me. Not only that, but they constantly mock me. The worst part is, Fang Zhiguo always tries to just smooth things over. If I say even a little more, he gets upset and even hits me. This time, he injured me this badly.

”Sis, I’ve thought it through. I don’t want Mom, Dad, and you to worry about me anymore. Besides, Mom and Dad wouldn’t mind if I moved back home. Anything would be better than staying with the Fang family.”

”It’s good that you’re thinking this way,” Gai Yanyan said, gently patting her sister’s hand. ”Don’t worry, our family can support you. If worst comes to worst, we can find you a live-in son-in-law, which would also please Mom and Dad.”

After discussing this, they chatted a bit more. However, Gai Fangfang still felt her sister was hiding something. ”Sis, are you keeping something from me?”

Gai Yanyan hesitated for a moment but decided to tell her what she had overheard. ”Sis, it’s not that I was worried you’d be bored here alone. After delivering the food container, I wanted to hurry back to keep you company. But halfway here, I suddenly had to urinate urgently. I figured since it was dark and no one would see, I’d just find a spot to relieve myself.

”I didn’t expect that just as I was in the middle of it, I heard someone passing by. You have no idea—I was nearly scared to death right then!”

Gai Fangfang looked her sister up and down. ”Are you alright?”

Gai Yanyan got up, peeked out the door, and saw that there was nobody outside. Then she walked over to her sister and whispered, ”I’m fine, but I overheard something I shouldn’t have.”

Gai Fangfang didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation. ”What did you hear?”

Gai Yanyan leaned close to her sister’s ear. ”Someone wants to harm Doctor Chu from the infirmary.”

Gai Fangfang’s eyes widened in shock. ”What did you say?”

In her agitation, her voice rose, startling Gai Yanyan, who quickly covered her sister’s mouth. ”Keep your voice down!”

Once Gai Fangfang calmed down, she pulled her sister’s hand away from her mouth and asked urgently in a hushed voice, ”Doctor Chu just helped me today. We can’t keep this from him!”

Gai Yanyan nodded. ”I was thinking the same thing. But we don’t know Doctor Chu well, and it’s after hours now—everyone’s left work. What if those people make their move tonight? What should we do?”

Gai Fangfang recalled something she had overheard unintentionally earlier. ”Sis, I heard Nurse Xiaochen mention that Doctor Chu lives in the courtyard behind the infirmary. How about I go with you?”

Gai Yanyan thought for a moment, worried her sister might aggravate her wound. ”You’d better stay put. Anyway, it’s still early, so I’ll go myself. No matter what, we should at least warn him. It’ll be our way of repaying Doctor Chu for helping us today.”

Gai Fangfang remembered that someone would be on duty at the production materials department next door at night, so she wasn’t too worried about safety. She nodded. ”Alright then, Sis. Wear your army greatcoat, and make it a quick trip.”
