Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 229: Chapter 229: This is good too, to have some peace

Since it was a matter of assisting, the money naturally had to be counted clearly in front of everyone to avoid any further mistakes.

All the money from the leather bag was taken out, and the still-sealed envelope was also opened.

There was a total of five thousand yuan in the leather bag, which made everyone gasp—how much contribution was needed to get such a large sum of money?

The envelope had two hundred yuan inside, making it a total of five thousand two hundred yuan.

Director Zhou also borrowed paper and a pen from the office for Yunyi to write a receipt, showing that he had received the re-donated funds.

After thanking Yunyi once more, the group left.

Once again watching the car drive away, Yunyi then picked up the reward from the city hospital and headed home.

Yunyi’s reasons for doing so were twofold: first, she genuinely wanted to contribute to the disaster relief, and second, she wished to avoid further disturbances. She had intended to donate the money as soon as she received it. However, unsure whom to approach, she had decided to wait and give it to Huo Jingrui when she next saw him. Given the Huo Family’s significant contributions, she was certain there would be some acknowledgment, and he would surely visit again.

Thinking about how the young men in the village had been looking at her these past few days, and the questions from those people earlier, she decided she didn’t want to wait any longer.

After all, now that she had no money, those people naturally wouldn’t target her anymore. She believed that by nightfall, news of her donation would spread throughout the village. Then she, the ”family squanderer,” would no longer be on their minds.

However, before it even got dark, while she was in the kitchen preparing to make pickles, she heard someone calling from outside the yard, ”Chu Zhiqing, are you there?”

Yunyi recognized the voice immediately. ”Auntie, I’m here, please come in.”

Zhao Guihua came in carrying a basket. ”Are you preparing to make salted vegetables?” she asked.

Yunyi smiled as she brought over a wooden stool for her. ”Yes, but not salted vegetables. I’m planning to make some Sichuan-style pickles. I learned it from a neighbor, a lady from Sichuan Province, when I was in Beijing.”

Zhao Guihua’s interest was piqued. ”I heard from my third son that the pickles from Sichuan Province are very appetizing,” she said. ”Is it hard to make? If it’s not too much trouble, I might make some to keep as well. If he can come back for New Year’s, he could have a taste.”

There was no secret to it, so Yunyi explained the steps. ”I’m going to start making them in a bit, so you can learn now. If you can’t remember, I’ll write it down for you. Just follow the steps later; it’s not difficult.”

The two of them chatted for a while before Zhao Guihua remembered her main reason for visiting. ”Chu Zhiqing,” she began, ”I heard from people in the village that you donated all the prize money you received?”

Yunyi looked up. ”Has word spread that fast?”

Zhao Guihua washed her hands in a nearby basin and helped Yunyi pack the vegetables into the jar. ”Of course,” she said. ”It’s all over the production brigade now, and quite a few people are calling you foolish.”

Yunyi continued her work nonchalantly. ”Auntie, what do you think?”

Zhao Guihua placed the last piece of radish into the jar. ”You’re a smart girl, someone with great compassion. You don’t need to listen to their nonsense.”

After helping move the jar aside, she continued, ”It’s good this way; you can have some peace and quiet.”

Yunyi nodded with a smile and said, ”Auntie, you must be familiar with the situation of every household in the village. By doing this, I suppose I’m killing two birds with one stone.”

They chatted until all the vegetables prepared in the kitchen were pickled. Then, Zhao Guihua got ready to leave. ”I’ve really learned something today,” she said. ”With these Sichuan-style pickles and other preserved vegetables, our meals won’t be so monotonous anymore.”

She got up and picked up her basket. ”These are eggs I’ve been saving. You delivered such important news yesterday...”
