The Legendary Method Actor

Ray’s heart hammered against his ribs as the implications sank in. The Detective’s voice rang clear in his mind:

Detective:”Someone tore this place apart looking for THIS research, and they might come back to finish the job.”

Veteran:“We need to move. NOW!”

The Veteran’s urgency propelled him into action.

”Cassian,”

Ray whispered, already closing the portfolio with careful hands,

”We can’t stay here, where’s somewhere safe we can properly examine this?”

Cassian ran a hand through his wild black hair, his blue eyes darting around nervously.

”My workshop, I have a private space in the old clocktower above the College of Artifice.”

”It’s warded, and hardly anyone goes up there because of all the stairs.”

Conman:”Perfect, high ground, limited access points, and the kind of place people actively avoid. Smart kid.”

Ray nodded, tucking the portfolio securely inside his robes.

”First, we need to cover our tracks.”

Moving with practiced efficiency, Ray began methodically erasing evidence of their presence. He straightened papers, brushed away footprints in the dust, and meticulously reset the hidden compartment. The soft click of the mechanism closing felt like a final punctuation mark.

”Check the bookshelf angle,”

The Detective prompted.

”It needs to be exactly as we found it.”

Ray with the help of Cassian struggled as they adjusted the massive shelf, ensuring the gouges in the floor aligned perfectly with its current position. He even scattered a few pieces of broken glass back where his boots had cleared them earlier. Cassian watched, utterly mesmerized, as the small boy worked. While he himself was still reeling from the desecration of his ancestor’s study and the discovery of the hidden portfolio, his mind was like a storm while Ray was a portrait of unnerving calm. The boy moved with a quiet, methodical efficiency that was chilling. He didn’t just tidy up; he meticulously reconstructed the scene of the crime, his small hands moving with the precision of a master artisan resetting a delicate clock. Again he thought, this wasn’t the behavior of a curious student; it was the practiced, cold-blooded work of a professional spy erasing a trail. A profound and deeply unsettling thought struck Cassian: maybe for Ray Croft, this was not the first time he had covered his tracks.

”Let’s go,”

Ray whispered, gesturing toward the door.

”But not together, you go first, take the main stairs.”

”I’ll follow in five minutes using the service corridor.”

Cassian nodded, understanding flickering in his eyes. At the doorway, he paused.

”Ray... what we found... this could change everything.”

”I know,”

Ray replied softly.

”That’s exactly what worries me.”

After Cassian left, Ray did one final sweep of the room. The Veteran’s voice was grim in his mind:

Veteran:”Whatever’s in this research, got Thaddeus disappeared. We need to be extremely careful about who knows we have it.”

Five minutes later, Ray slipped out like a shadow, the weight of the portfolio feeling like a loaded weapon against his chest. Above him, the clocktower of the College of Artifice loomed against the darkening sky, promising temporary sanctuary and hopefully, answers.

Cassian fidgeted in the dim light of his workshop, his mind racing through todays events. Ray had always struck him as an exceptionally bright and curious scholar, someone with an innate talent for understanding complex ideas. But beneath that youthful exterior lay something darker, a cold and methodical side that sent a shiver down Cassian’s spine. He found it almost comical that a grown man like himself could be intimidated by an twelve-year-old boy, yet there was no denying the palpable intensity Ray exuded when focused.

”What have I gotten myself into?”

Cassian muttered under his breath, glancing around at the stacks of books and scattered scrolls cluttering his workspace. He tried to shake off the unease creeping into his thoughts.

”It’s just research, it’s just a project.”

The faint sound of footsteps echoed outside the workshop door, pulling Cassian from his reverie. A familiar voice called out, light and cheerful despite the tension lingering in the air.

”Cassian, it’s me!”

Relief flooded through him as he opened the door to find Ray standing there, eyes gleaming with excitement. The sight of his friend, alive and well after their narrow escape from Thaddeus’s office, eased Cassian’s anxiety.

”You made it!”

He exclaimed, stepping aside to let Ray enter. Ray nodded and swept into the room with an air of confidence that belied his age. He closed the door behind him, ensuring their conversation remained private.

”We need to look at what we found,”

Ray said, already unrolling Thaddeus’s portfolio on a cluttered workbench. As they began to sift through the contents together, Cassian couldn’t help but marvel at how quickly Ray shifted gears from cautious child to determined scholar. The transformation was uncanny; it was as if he wore multiple masks effortlessly, each one more suited for different situations. The portfolio contained numerous pages detailing Master Thaddeus’s research on Genesis Crystals and their alarming decay rate. As they read on, they uncovered chilling information about a hidden location within Solhaven Academy, the ”Sunken Vaults” where dangerous magical artifacts were stored and left unchecked.

”This is incredible,”

Cassian breathed as he read aloud one particularly striking line:

“The contamination emanating from these artifacts has begun to fray the ley lines feeding our precious Genesis Crystal.”

Ray leaned closer, eyes narrowing in concentration as he processed this revelation.

”If Thaddeus’s theory is correct,”

He murmured thoughtfully,

“the entire academy is sitting on a powder keg.”

Cassian nodded vigorously but felt a surge of dread wash over him as he thought about what such knowledge might mean for them both. The Sunken Vaults sounded ominous enough without knowing exactly what lay within. Flipping through additional pages in search of further details, Ray paused when he came across another section that appeared different, it was encrypted documents layered with intricate symbols unfamiliar to them both.

”These must be advanced encryption methods,”

Ray noted with interest as he studied the pages closely.

“Why would Thaddeus encrypt these but leave other documents unguarded?”

Cassian’s brow furrowed in confusion.

”What do you think is so important that he’d hide it?”

Ray considered this question carefully before answering.

”Whatever this is might be even more critical than what we’ve seen so far.”

His voice took on a determined tone as curiosity sparked in his eyes again.

“We need to find out why.”

As they continued examining each page meticulously, Ray felt excitement mingle with apprehension; every detail promised potential revelations while also reminding him of how perilous their situation had become since discovering Thaddeus’s research. A realization hit him: they weren’t just uncovering lost knowledge, they were delving into dangerous territory where power could easily corrupt those unprepared for its weighty consequences. His resolve hardened further; they needed allies and information before venturing into such murky waters and soon enough, the truth would emerge about both Thaddeus Ashvane and whatever secrets lingered within those forbidden walls of Solhaven Academy.

As they continued studying the documents, Cassian’s fingers brushed against a leather-bound journal tucked between the sheaves of Thaddeus’s research. He opened it gingerly, his eyes scanning the meticulously written entries. The journal was a treasure trove of personal reflections and scientific observations, chronicling Thaddeus’s journey from celebrated professor to silenced pariah. One particular entry caught Cassian’s eye. It detailed the aftermath of Thaddeus presenting his findings to the higher-ups at the academy. As he read aloud, his voice trembled with a mix of anger and sorrow:

”The Arcane Council arrived from the capital today and together with the academy Headmaster, I presented my findings to them. I proposed the decommissioning of the Sunken Vaults due to their existential risk. Instead of praise or consideration, I was met with fear and hostility. They stripped me of my duties, confiscated my research, and placed me under house arrest within my own office. I am now a prisoner in all but name, my work forgotten, until the day I die.”

Cassian’s hands shook as he closed the journal, his face pale with fury.

”They silenced him, Ray!”

”They locked him away and left him to rot!”

Ray felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. The fate that befell Thaddeus loomed over them like a specter, a grim reminder of what awaited those who dared challenge the Arcane Council and the academy’s authority.

”If they find out what we’re doing,”

Ray murmured,

”We could end up just like him.”

His mind raced through scenarios of house arrest, confiscation of their work, or worse. The higher-ups would not hesitate to bury them along with their discoveries if it meant preserving their power. But fear quickly gave way to a steely determination.

”We can’t let that happen,”

Ray said firmly.

”We have to keep going.”

With renewed resolve, he turned his attention to the encrypted documents they had found earlier. He activated his Eccentric Scholar persona, allowing its analytical prowess to guide him through the complex cipher. As he worked through the symbols and patterns, he realized that some elements mirrored those in the Aeridor fragments. Yet something felt off, some symbols seemed out of place or carried meanings that didn’t align with known languages or codes. The Arcane Scribe persona reacted instinctively to these anomalies. Ray felt an almost physical tug in his mind as he activated Concurrent Partial Immersion, blending their strengths into a single cohesive force.

Slowly but surely, he began to decrypt the documents. What emerged was both astonishing and horrifying: Master Thaddeus had ventured into the Sunken Vaults himself. His notes described mutated creatures like rats and other small critters transformed into monstrous beasts by prolonged exposure to corrupted mana within the vaults. These creatures exhibited alarming similarities to Ray’s own condition, they suffered from what seemed like an ”Aetheric Leak,” their life-force draining away rapidly.

Ray’s heart pounded as he read on. Thaddeus had conducted experiments on these creatures, discovering that their ailment mirrored not only Ray’s condition but also what was happening to the Genesis Crystal itself. The Genesis Crystal was designed to absorb and store the raw, ambient Mana from the ley lines it was never designed to purify corrupted mana, but it was now forced to filter corrupted mana from the Sunken Vaults’ artifacts and creatures. This strain caused it to fray at a metaphysical level, a phenomenon Thaddeus termed ”Resonance Cascade Failure.” Thaddeus predicted that if left unchecked, this fraying would lead to catastrophic containment breaches and eventually cause tremors strong enough to affect the entire demi-plane.

”The crystal is coping for now,”

Ray read aloud,

”but it’s only a matter of time before it fails completely.”

”When that happens...the tremors will grow stronger until they tear apart everything.”

Ray sat back, absorbing the full weight of Thaddeus’s words. His condition was linked to something far more significant than he’d ever imagined, the very survival of Solhaven Academy hung in balance. Ray said quietly but with unshakable resolve.

”We need more information.”

Cassian nodded,

”We have to find out more about these Sunken Vaults and what’s really going on down there.”

They exchanged a determined look before turning back to Thaddeus’s notes. Their path forward was fraught with danger, but they were committed now, their quest for truth had become a race against time.
