Chapter 502: Such Thoughts of Hers Were Wrong

Tushan Jingci kept running down the mountain.

The setting sun at the edge of the sky drew out a very, very long slanted shadow behind her, swaying gently with the young woman’s running figure.

But the moment she ran into the bamboo courtyard, her steps slowed involuntarily.

“I... What did I come running here to do?”

For a moment, Tushan Jingci was somewhat dazed. She did not even know what she was doing.

She only felt panicked inside. She wanted to see Xiao Mo. She did not want Xiao Mo and Sister Liu Shui to stay together.

But when she truly ran to the front of the bamboo courtyard, a few traces of regret rose in her heart instead.

Tushan Jingci suddenly realized—even if she went, what could she do?

If Xiao Mo and Sister Liu Shui really ended up together, what could she possibly do?

Could she stop them?

Could she tear Xiao Mo and Sister Liu Shui apart?

As all kinds of tangled thoughts ran through her mind, she unconsciously continued walking forward.

Before she knew it, she had already arrived outside Xiao Mo’s bamboo courtyard.

Tushan Jingci lifted her head and saw Xiao Mo and Liu Shui in the courtyard at a glance. She could not help being startled, and quickly slipped behind several stalks of bamboo, using her innate divine ability to conceal her aura.

The young woman’s delicate hand rested lightly against a green bamboo stalk, her body hidden behind the bamboo shadows. Without blinking, she watched the two people in the courtyard, her heart thumping in her chest, faster with each beat.

Her hands tightened more and more around the bamboo, her fingertips faintly whitening. She was afraid Xiao Mo and Liu Shui might do something intimate.

Tushan Jingci very much wanted to hear what the two of them were saying, but the courtyard had a spell formation set up to block divine sense from probing inside. She could hear nothing at all, and her heart grew more anxious, as though a fire were burning within it.

A little less than half an incense stick later.

Tushan Jingci saw Xiao Mo take one step back and give Sister Liu Shui a respectful bow.

Standing before Xiao Mo, Sister Liu Shui’s expression was blank. She stood there dazedly, her small hands clutching her sleeves tightly, as though quietly waiting for Xiao Mo to speak.

And when Xiao Mo seemed to have finished saying something, Tushan Jingci clearly saw Sister Liu Shui’s eyes tremble slightly, as though something had struck her in the heart, leaving her unable to recover for a long time.

In the end, Tushan Jingci only saw Sister Liu Shui cover her mouth, turn, and run out of the courtyard.

And as Liu Shui ran toward the outside of the bamboo grove, she happened to be heading in the very direction where Tushan Jingci was hiding.

When Liu Shui saw Tushan Jingci face-to-face, she could not help being slightly startled, and her steps stopped as well.

“Sister Liu Shui...”

Tushan Jingci looked at Liu Shui’s faintly trembling eyes, and at the crystal tears still hanging from the reddened corners of them, as though they would roll down at any moment. For a time, she did not know what to say.

She did not know what exactly had happened between Sister Liu Shui and Xiao Mo.

But it probably... had not been very good.

“Greetings, Young Lady Tushan...” Liu Shui dipped in a salute. Her trembling voice carried a faint, irrepressible sob. “Well... Young Lady Tushan, I still have some matters to attend to, so... I will take my leave first.”

When she finished speaking, she lightly raised her hand and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. Then she could not help looking once more toward the courtyard, her gaze full of reluctance. Only then did she turn and run far away, her figure gradually disappearing into the depths of the bamboo grove.

After Liu Shui left, Tushan Jingci’s gaze fell back on Xiao Mo in the courtyard.

She saw Xiao Mo looking in the direction Sister Liu Shui had gone, his expression carrying a hint of guilt, his brows slightly furrowed, as though he had done something against his conscience.

Only after a good while did Xiao Mo withdraw his gaze. When he turned and saw Tushan Jingci standing outside the courtyard, he gave a faint smile and said warmly, “Young Lady, why have you come?”

“I... I...”

The young woman’s eyes trembled slightly. Her mind spun rapidly, thinking of how she should explain why she had appeared here.

“I just came out of seclusion in the Forest of Confucian Grace. Since there wasn’t anything urgent anyway, I simply came to see you. I was also afraid you might be bored here alone.”

As she spoke, she walked into the courtyard on her own. She looked left and right, touching the stone table for a moment and then brushing a bamboo branch, putting on an air of casual indifference.

Afterward, she lifted those beautiful eyes and looked straight into Xiao Mo’s. Her throat moved; she seemed to want to speak, then stopped. But in the end, she still opened her mouth.

“Speaking of which, Xiao Mo, why did Sister Liu Shui run out crying? Did you bully Sister Liu Shui?”

“This... probably cannot be considered bullying.” Xiao Mo shook his head and sat down on the stone stool, his expression carrying an indescribable complexity.

“Then why did Sister Liu Shui look like she was about to cry?”

Tushan Jingci placed both hands behind her back and bent her slender waist slightly to the side. Her tone carried a hint of speaking up for Liu Shui, but deep within those beautiful eyes, an indescribable tension was hidden.

“It really was nothing.” Xiao Mo smiled in a refined manner and did not reveal Liu Shui’s private affairs. He stood, a trace of weariness appearing in his expression. “I’m a little tired. I’ll go back to my room and rest for a while. I’m afraid I won’t be able to accompany Young Lady. Why don’t you go back for today?”

After saying this, he turned and walked toward his room.

Looking at Xiao Mo’s back, Tushan Jingci lightly bit her thin lip. Hesitation and conflict intertwined in her eyes, and her two hands unconsciously tightened around her skirt.

Just as Xiao Mo was about to step through the door, Tushan Jingci abruptly raised her head and called to his back.

“Xiao Mo!”

“Mm?” Xiao Mo stopped, turned around, and looked at her gently.

Tushan Jingci took a deep breath, as though gathering courage for herself. Her voice unconsciously softened a little.

“Sister Liu Shui... did she tell you how she felt?”

Xiao Mo froze slightly. “Young Lady... how did you...”

Xiao Mo had not expected Jingci to be able to guess even that.

“I... When I had just come out of the Forest of Confucian Grace today, I happened to run into Sister Liu Shui on her return.” Tushan Jingci lowered her lashes, a faint blush rising over her cheeks, her voice growing softer and softer. “She asked me... asked me... whether you would like a woman like her.”

She paused, as though it took great effort to say what came next.

“So... Sister Liu Shui really did tell you how she felt? The two of you... Sister Liu Shui was like that, so don’t tell me you...”

“That is what happened...”

Although the young woman had not finished speaking, Xiao Mo already understood what she wanted to ask. He nodded lightly and did not deny it.

“I refused Sister Liu Shui.”

“Why?” Tushan Jingci lowered her head, her slender fingers unconsciously kneading together. “Sister Liu Shui is such a good woman...”

Her voice grew smaller and smaller, until it was almost audible only to herself.

The young woman felt that her heart had become stranger and stranger.

She was clearly feeling sad for Sister Liu Shui.

But deep in her heart, there was also a faint trace of relief.

And she also knew perfectly well that such thoughts of hers were wrong.
