Master Of None

Chapter 2828: 2828. Clean and Clean

It felt a little too clean too. That was how the entire party felt as they moved toward the entrance of the larger stone building.

Calling it a tower was a little much. It was more like a town hall feeling than a tower. But it was also clear that the toughened stone was made to have openings in the air which were very similar to how Genesis built buildings for flying races. It was oddly calming knowing that they were similar.

”This time mana thing makes me think that someone saw more of the future than we think Walker.” Remey didnʼt look like she was going to argue anything, just that she was noticing the rough similarities like the others were.

”Seeing potential could mean a lot of things. Especially if someone were to look at the potential of other races at the time. Who knows what monsters were part of this continent and managed to make it to others leaving their bloodlines to be carried on in the future, todayʼs age. Look at Scylla for example. She holds an ancient monsterʼs bloodline. One that could easily travel in the oceans or the land.”

”So if they had some sort of seer mage that could see the future or potential in someoneʼs bloodline, they might have seen the potential that an ancient monster could be a normal race as we know it today, like the harpy race. And from there, they could have visions of them landing in windows to enter buildings leading them to make this area accessible in that way?” Onyx summed up what Walker was saying but it also sounded like he was looking for more.

”Ah, brother, there it is, a small space for shadows and serpents to get inside too.” The joy that came from Onyx was even brighter since it appeared he could easily slither in to the opening using his skills revolving around dark mana and the fact he could hide within shadows.

It even seemed like there were somewhat worn hooks for weapons or jackets to hang too on the front. It all felt a little too welcoming compared to what they had dealt with in terms of other ruins or just generally dangers.

Before they stepped through the threshold and in to the front entry which was shockingly bright with the undying flame torches, they noticed carving on the ground. It was not just in one language but seemed to be taking words of multiple. The broken apperance came from that and also the bits of language that didnʼt seem to be part of this age either.

”Itʼs still readable even with how they made it more like an art piece. I think itʼs intentional since they knew people of different races would come here one day. It feels like we are just the first to see a gift handed to us before we show it to the others it is for.” The more that Su looked the less she held her guard up. The unsettling feeling that someone from the past guessed the needs of their present were mental and not physical.

”Welcome to your home of rest and safety. Meet one another with open arms and vibrant smiles. We of the time magic tower hope you may be blessed with great potential. Follow the will of your heart and stand atop the world to see the stars.”

Well, itʼs pretty clear we have been welcomed in.” Gil shrugged and moved ahead with Midnight at his side. The two were taking in everything they could see. Stone tables, stone chairs, even clean walls with the potential for posting notices or handing more weapons and gear. It was all so well organized that it seemed like someone had spent years working on it rather than something from ancient times.

However, there was a lot of dust on the tables, just not the floors which was odd to them. ”So just the tables get dirty after all these years?” As if to catch Gilʼs curiosity more, the scraping sound of something moving from the shadows of the walls and holes in them, from smaller races to move around caught them.

ʼDust bunny beetle

These monsters are small and insanely obsessed with cleanliness. They gather dust, dirt, and other small bits on the ground to make unique condensed balls to impress the females of their species. Their obsession is also perfect for keeping things clean over time since they are not violent or territorial unless they find another trying to clean in their territory.

They have striking, shiny brown carapaces that make them something people wish to collect after they shed their shell during growth periods. This is also why they are considered valuable since small jewelry can be made from their bodies.

Some monsters will try to consume them, but they are not easy to catch since they have a dual affinity with earth and wind, making them able to fly away very quickly. It is also that connection that allows them to be related to their cousins the sand dung beetles in most deserts…ʼ

”So thatʼs why everything is so clean, they canʼt easily get on top of the tables but they can clean the floors without issues.” As if to test the theory, Gil wiped off the thick dust from the table to the floor. A large skittering sound came as several beetles rushed out and began to gather the dust in to small balls and roll even more away to meld together. It was an odd sight.

Walker felt the pull of mana, not just one mana but natural mana drawing him in though. The others explored as they wished while he followed the feeling to a downward staircase. It also most felt like it had been made to be less seen by anyone walking around casually without looking for it. Hidden just enough not to be messed around with.

He stopped on the stairs and saw small light elemental rune formations light the words along the wall.

ʼOne of potential and greatness, we see your spark in the future.ʼ

ʼWe leave you what we can not use. What we can not survive to protect.ʼ

ʼTake this gift and share it with those who will rise.ʼ

ʼFoster the garden in the midst of the elemental lands.ʼ

ʼMay the will of all that is bless you, child of origin earned through truer means.ʼ

The words along the wall said so much and more. Whoever the time mages were they had seen the potential in his arrival. It seemed they did not have details about him specifically, but they saw the potential for an origin being born from the world to appear here. They had taken their knowledge and whatever else and stored it away. Somewhere safer. Somewhere better.

The light flickered as more carved words came to be seen. However, these were not left by the same hand. Instead, it appeared these were records and last words. Evidence of the downfall of those here.

”Fear the shadow maw, their endless hunger can only be called a curse of gluttony. The true curse that swallows everything in pitch black end. Please someone take upon themselves the role of hero and destroy the remnants after we have gone.”

Walker heard Alice catch up to him, she had most likely sensed the light mana. However, he read out loud so that she could get on the same page as he was.

Besides this one record, it seemed more people had left their mark accounting their fight against whatever the shadow maw was. Whatever that ancient monster was, it was enough that the mages in this dower of all mana affinity had left behind a record for those of today.

”The sin title holder of gluttony was already defeated, right?” Some worry remained in Aliceʼs voice even though she knew this to be true.

”Well, the title might be held by another or the title could be changed, I know others might learn and become holders or able to hold your title too. I know it says only one person can have these titles at one time. But maybe the titles came from ancient monsters or beings in the first place? Maybe this is the origin of the gluttony title?”

The theory seemed to work well with the way that titles and god system holders came to be. Everything was created in some way, shape, or form. The hero title was perfect proof. A hero was made through their actions, therefore, the title only appeared when someone able to live that came to be. Let alone the true hero title like Walkers.

He looked forward and found a single door. Covered in runes and surprisingly made of wood. It was waiting to be opened. Who knew for how long it had waited.
