ARK SPIRIT

Hao Nhien stopped in front of the large man’s stall.

The same old mat was spread across the stone ground. On it lay several first rank beast cores, a few bundles of demonic beast fur, several cleaned white bones, a handful of low level medicinal herbs still clinging to traces of soil, and a few small objects whose uses were not immediately clear. Compared with the noisy stalls around it, this place felt strangely calm.

The large man was still sitting there.

He was tall and broad shouldered, with messy hair tied behind his neck and several old scars across his face. He did not shout to attract customers, nor did he actively invite anyone over. Those who came could look. Those who asked would receive an answer. Those who left were ignored.

Hao Nhien crouched down in front of the mat, let his gaze pass over the miscellaneous items, then looked up at the man.

“Senior.”

The large man raised an eyebrow slightly.

“Calling me?”

Hao Nhien nodded.

“The last time we met, I thought you were just a passing merchant. Seeing you still sitting here today made me curious.”

He paused before asking,

“With your strength, why not earn contribution points and enter the examination? If you wanted to reach the inner sect, I doubt it would be too difficult.”

The large man looked at him for a while, then let out a rough laugh. His voice was deep and coarse, like mountain wind passing through a narrow gap between rocks.

“You think I don’t want to?”

He picked up a piece of demonic beast bone from the mat and turned it in his hand.

“Of course I do.”

The smile on his face gradually faded.

“For the past three years, I’ve spent more time in the mountains than outside them. Every day I meet demonic beasts. I hunt, and I get hunted. If I really entered the examination and a few outer sect disciples blocked my way, I could kill all of them in less than fifteen minutes.”

Hao Nhien remained silent.

The large man spoke calmly. There was no boasting in his tone, nor did it sound like a threat. He was simply describing a way of dealing with things that had become far too familiar to him.

“But then what?”

The large man placed the bone back on the mat.

“What would I become in the eyes of Tieu Dao Sect? A murderer? Or worse, a demonic beast wearing human skin?”

He shook his head.

“I don’t want to live like that.”

Hao Nhien studied the man in front of him more carefully.

Only now did he realize that the man carried a presence very different from ordinary outer sect disciples. It was not cultivation pressure, nor some aura that Hao Nhien could penetrate with spiritual awareness. It was merely an impression formed from outward details: the way the man sat while still keeping track of the open space around him, the rough calluses across his hands, and the way his eyes never completely relaxed even while watching passing customers.

A person who had lived too long in the deep forest would leave traces like that behind.

Hao Nhien asked quietly,

“So selling things here is the way Senior chose to live?”

The large man raised his head and looked at the stream of people moving through the market. His eyes briefly grew distant.

“Not exactly to live.”

“Then what?”

“To learn how to be human.”

Hao Nhien paused slightly.

The large man gave a self mocking smile.

“After long enough, some things become instinct. And when instinct takes over too much, a person isn’t all that different from a beast.”

Mountain wind swept through the market. From farther away came the sounds of vendors shouting, people bargaining, and disciples arguing over a low grade pill or an old talisman.

The large man watched the crowd as his voice slowed.

“Here, I sit and watch people laugh. I watch them argue over a few spirit stones and worry about the examination. Some turn pale because they’re short ten points. Some buy a low grade pill and look as happy as if they found a treasure. Others are obviously afraid, yet still grit their teeth and prepare to enter a secret realm.”

He paused.

“I never used to notice things like that.”

The large man looked down at his own hands.

“I sell things so I can relearn how to talk to people. So I can sit here and listen to someone bargain without losing patience. More importantly, I want to learn how to watch someone approach without my first thought being where they might attack from.”

The corner of his mouth lifted.

“To learn how to hand something to another person instead of putting a blade into them.”

He looked up at Hao Nhien.

“That is what I am cultivating.”

Hao Nhien stayed quiet for a moment, then slowly exhaled.

“I used to think cultivation was mainly about raising one’s realm, practicing sword techniques, hunting demonic beasts, and gathering resources. Hearing Senior say this makes me realize there may be much more a person has to cultivate.”

The large man did not answer immediately.

Instead, he pointed toward a corner of the market.

“See those people?”

Hao Nhien followed his gaze.

A group dressed very differently from Tieu Dao Sect disciples had gathered around several small stalls. Their skin was slightly darker, their clothes were patterned in many colors, and bone and bronze bracelets circled their wrists. Elderly people were sorting medicinal herbs. Several women sat weaving rough cloth that carried a faint trace of spiritual qi. Children ran back and forth carrying things, while several young men helped with the work and practiced breathing cultivation whenever they had a spare moment.

“People from the Southern Frontier,” the large man said.

“The whole clan came up here together. The elders sell herbs, others weave cloth, and the children run errands. The spirit stones they earn are used to buy pills, mission spoils, and whatever else is needed for the examination. All of it is meant to help a few talented young people in the clan go farther.”

He watched them for a while.

“One of them rising does not mean only one person is making the effort. There are many people behind him, all pushing him forward.”

The large man pointed toward a nearby talisman stall.

“And that fellow.”

Hao Nhien looked over.

A thin young man with slightly messy hair sat behind a table covered in talismans. A female disciple had been explaining something to him for quite a while. He listened with a frown, occasionally lowering his head to sketch a few lines on a piece of scrap paper.

“A few days ago, someone asked whether he had a talisman that could sense nearby companions in fog without giving off light.”

The large man smirked.

“He didn’t. But he didn’t laugh at the customer or chase them away either. He sat there and thought about it. A few days later, he really started trying to make a new kind of talisman.”

The large man looked at Hao Nhien.

“Breathing cultivation trains qi. Sword practice trains skill. But how far a person can go doesn’t depend on only those two things.”

He pointed toward the Southern Frontier group.

“Some rise with the strength of an entire clan behind them.”

Then he pointed toward the talisman seller.

“Some use their minds to find something no one has done before.”

Then he raised a hand and pointed at himself.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

“As for me, I’m learning how to overcome my own instincts.”

Finally, the large man tilted his head.

“What about you, kid?”

Hao Nhien did not answer immediately. After a while, he said slowly,

“I’m not sure yet.”

He looked at the stream of people moving through the market.

“Maybe I’m still learning how to cultivate. Learning how to become stronger, how to live in this world, and how to understand what kind of person I need to become.”

The large man listened without laughing.

He only asked one more question.

“Then what are you cultivating for?”

The question was asked lightly.

But Hao Nhien stayed silent for a long time.

His gaze passed over the crowd, over the Southern Frontier clan gathering resources for the young people they had chosen, over the talisman seller still bent over the customer’s request, and finally returned to the large man in front of him.

He thought of Tieu Lan, from the days when the two of them had needed to rely on each other just to survive, to the moment she found her own path at Medicine Peak.

He thought of Anh Nhien, sleeping somewhere in a distant universe, someone he wanted to find even though he did not yet know where to begin.

He thought of the parents of this body, people who had left behind an emptiness he was not yet strong enough to reach.

Then he remembered the days when he had been so weak that every step forward depended on someone else, the times when danger had stood clearly before him and his only real choice had been to avoid it.

Only after a long while did Hao Nhien finally speak.

“I cultivate so that one day, I won’t have to run when I don’t want to.”

His voice was not loud, but it was steady.

“So that when someone stands behind me, I’ll be strong enough that they won’t have to face everything alone.”

He paused.

“Not only through cultivation level, and not only through the sword.”

Hao Nhien’s gaze gradually deepened.

Since arriving in this world, he had passed through many places, yet very few had ever allowed him to truly relax. Thanh Van Town, the Quan family, the road to Tieu Dao Sect, the outer sect, even the Cave Dwelling within the Cosmic Ark had all given him places to stop.

But a place to stop and a place to belong were not quite the same thing.

“I want a place where I belong.”

“And if I can, I want to become a place others can return to.”

The large man watched him for a long time.

Something in his normally calm gaze shifted, but Hao Nhien did not know what he was thinking.

He did not ask.

Because another thought had already begun forming in Hao Nhien’s mind.

He looked around the market once more.

“Senior.”

“Mm?”

“What you just said reminded me of something.”

The large man did not urge him to continue.

Hao Nhien spoke slowly.

“Maybe observing something is not just about seeing what is in front of you.”

He looked at the large man.

“You’ve spent long enough in the forest to know how your own instincts changed. Because you saw that, you understood that what needed to change was not your cultivation realm, but the way you react to other people.”

His gaze shifted toward the Southern Frontier group.

“They know one person’s strength may not be enough, so they place the strength of an entire clan behind a few people.”

Then he looked toward the talisman stall.

“That talisman seller saw a need his existing talismans could not solve, so he started looking for another path.”

Hao Nhien fell silent for several breaths.

Those thoughts had not yet fully connected into a single whole. They were like pieces of stone he had only just picked up, each with a different shape, yet when placed beside one another they seemed to point vaguely in the same direction.

He spoke more slowly.

“Maybe observation is not just looking.”

Hao Nhien continued,

“Maybe you also have to look at why something reacts the way it does.”

At those words, Hao Nhien himself paused.

He suddenly realized that he had been doing this for a long time without ever giving it a name.

When practicing fist techniques, he had removed unnecessary movements to find what was truly useful. Beneath the Thanh Van River, he could not overpower the current, so he had learned how his body responded to pressure. Against the Iron Armored Turtle, when he could not break its shell, he turned to smoke. Against the Mystic Sound Wolf, he had not been stronger than his opponent. He had simply watched long enough to force it into making the wrong reactions again and again.

Before, he had called all of that improvisation.

Looking back now, there seemed to be the same way of thinking behind every instance: before trying to defeat something, he first needed to understand how it worked.

The large man watched him for a long time.

Then he suddenly laughed.

“I was only talking about myself.”

He shook his head.

“You’re the one who found something of your own in it.”

His laughter was lighter this time.

“Not bad.”

Hao Nhien cupped his hands.

“Even so, Senior is the one who made me think of it.”

The large man did not argue.

He lowered his gaze to the mat for a moment, then reached inside his clothes and took out an old jade token.

It was about half the size of a palm and gray green in color. Its surface was dull and covered in countless small scratches. There were no elaborate patterns, only a faint claw mark that looked as though something had once raked across it.

The large man held it out to Hao Nhien.

“Take it.”

Hao Nhien looked surprised.

“Senior, this is…”

“Plenty of people like this thing.”

The large man shrugged.

“It doesn’t mean much to me anymore.”

Hao Nhien accepted the jade token.

“How do I use it?”

“Wait until you’re strong enough. Late Foundation Establishment should do.”

The large man began gathering the items from the mat.

“Crush it and carve your name into it. By then, you’ll naturally know what to do next.”

Hao Nhien looked at the jade token in his hand.

It did not give off any especially noticeable aura, nor did it make his cultivation or Divine Soul react. It only felt old. The edges had been worn smooth, as though someone had carried it for many years.

“This doesn’t seem ordinary.”

“Whether it’s ordinary or not, you’ll know when you use it.”

The large man rolled up the mat.

Hao Nhien did not ask further.

He carefully put the jade token away, stood, and cupped his hands.

“Thank you, Senior. I am Quan Hao Nhien. If fate allows it, I hope we meet again.”

The large man slung his bag over one shoulder and looked back at him.

“Good. I’ll remember that.”

After walking a few steps, he stopped.

“People call me Lone Wolf.”

Hao Nhien repeated softly,

“Lone Wolf.”

The large man did not turn around.

“We’ll meet again.”

With that, he disappeared into the crowd.

His large frame should have been easy to spot, yet after only a short while, it gradually sank among the stalls, the calls of merchants, and the crowd moving beneath the slanting afternoon light.

Hao Nhien remained where he was for a while longer.

The gray green jade token in his storage pouch gave no reaction at all.

He finally turned toward his room, but the conversation remained in his mind.

By the time he returned, evening was approaching.

The outer sect behind him was still lively. Shouts from vendors, the sound of bargaining, and disciples calling to one another as they prepared for the examination drifted along the mountain wind, sometimes clear, sometimes faint.

Only when the stone door closed did the noise remain outside.

Hao Nhien activated the restriction and sat on the meditation cushion, his back resting against the cool stone wall.

Lone Wolf’s words still echoed in his mind.

Some people rose with the support of an entire clan. Some used their minds to create something that had never existed before. And Lone Wolf, after three years of living by instinct in the deep forest, had chosen to sit in the middle of a crowded market and slowly correct the reactions that had become rooted in him.

Those things did not seem directly connected.

Yet Hao Nhien felt that something vague ran through all of them.

To know how he should walk his own path, he first had to see clearly what was shaping the road in front of him.

That thought made him remember someone else.

One Sword Tieu Dao.

The senior who had once spent five hundred years alone atop a mountain, observing the changing seasons across mountains and rivers, watching clouds gather and scatter, wind move through deep forests, and water find its own path between stone crevices, all for the sake of comprehending two words.

The rules.

In the past, Hao Nhien had heard that story as though it were a legend.

Five hundred years simply to observe.

Five hundred years simply to understand.

He had admired it, but deep down he had never truly understood why someone could spend so long watching things that seemed so ordinary.

Now he felt as though he had finally touched a very small part of that meaning.

What One Sword Tieu Dao had wanted to see was never merely the mountains, the rivers, the clouds, or the wind.

What appeared before the eyes was only the result.

What he sought was the underlying logic that made them become that way.

Hao Nhien sat in silence for a long time.

Then he smiled faintly.

“Maybe I’ve spent too much time asking what I should do, and too little asking why this world forces people to act the way they do.”

That thought made Hao Nhien look back over the road he had traveled so far.

From the days when he had needed Tieu Lan just to understand this world, to the point where he could now step into the deep forest on his own, he had faced many situations where the principles of his old world could not simply hand him an answer.

There had been times when Hao Nhien knew perfectly well that others wanted to rob him, even force him into a dead end, yet some part of him had still hesitated in a way he could not fully explain.

He knew where that hesitation came from.

Earth.

In his old world, people did not rely solely on their own strength to survive. Law, society, morality, and other institutions existed together to prevent the strong from freely using force to prey on the weak. When someone committed a crime, punishment did not automatically belong to the victim.

That was part of civilization.

Hao Nhien had never believed there was anything wrong with that.

But this world was not Earth.

Tieu Dao Sect still had rules. Cities still had order. Clans, sects, and powerful factions all had limits of their own.

Yet once someone entered deep forests, secret realms, or places those rules could not immediately reach, no one would appear at the right moment to protect him.

If someone truly drew a sword to take his life, the first person who could protect Hao Nhien was Hao Nhien himself.

He slowly closed his eyes.

He remembered what it had felt like to be pursued all the way to the cliff.

Back then, anger had not been the only thing troubling him.

Part of him had still wondered whether killing people like that with his own hands would turn him into someone cruel.

Now, Hao Nhien no longer saw the question as simply as before.

Survival was a rule, but a rule was not morality. A tiger hunting weaker prey did not mean a human had to become a tiger. Understanding that a world functioned harshly did not mean using that harshness to justify every action.

Lone Wolf understood the deep forest better than most people.

But precisely because he understood what killing instinct had turned him into, he had chosen to return to the market and learn how to be human again.

Hao Nhien suddenly understood another layer.

What he needed to abandon was not compassion, but the illusion that hesitation always meant kindness.

If the other side had no intention of taking his life, Hao Nhien did not need to kill over a small advantage. If the threat had already ended and there was no reason to continue, he did not need to chase someone to the end merely to satisfy his anger.

From now on, he did not need to wait until the other person’s blade touched his throat before allowing himself to fight back. Once he had determined that someone truly intended to kill him, he would no longer tie his own hands merely because he feared becoming cruel.

Not because he enjoyed killing or because of hatred, but because when someone had truly decided to take his life, hesitation was no longer mercy.

It was simply placing his life in the other person’s hands.

Hao Nhien opened his eyes.

His gaze had not become fiercer.

If anything, a conflict that had quietly remained within him ever since coming to this world seemed to have eased.

Compassion could remain, but it had to be a choice, not a beautiful name used to hide helplessness.

Hao Nhien looked out the window.

The evening clouds had turned deep violet, while mountain wind carried the scent of pine and the cool spiritual qi of Tieu Dao Mountain into the room.

He thought about what he had just told Lone Wolf.

He wanted a place where he belonged.

He wanted to become a place others could return to.

If he wanted to do that, strength alone would not be enough.

He also needed to know when to draw his sword, when to sheath it, when to trust someone, and when he must never place his life in another person’s goodwill.

Perhaps that too was part of the logic of cultivation.

Hao Nhien slowly closed his eyes.

The thoughts from earlier gradually settled. But just as he adjusted his breathing and prepared to begin his breathing cultivation, the true qi within his meridians suddenly started moving a little faster on its own.

Hao Nhien opened his eyes again.

He knew this feeling too well.

After more than a month of fighting, recovering from injuries, exhausting his true qi, and restoring it again and again, his cultivation had already approached the boundary of the next layer.

Until now, there had always been a little distance left.

But at this moment, that distance seemed thinner than ever.

Hao Nhien silently looked at the storage pouch beside him.

A moment later, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

“Looks like I won’t be sleeping tonight.”
