Although Henry had never learned Magneto’s exact plan, and even Selene knew little about the details, it didn’t take him long to identify Magneto’s target based on the movie’s storyline:

The United Nations World Leaders Summit.

Leaders from nations around the globe would be gathering in New York.

Even if a head of state couldn’t attend personally, a heavyweight representative would be sent in their place.

This wasn’t merely a meeting of ambassadors and diplomats exchanging opinions they lacked the authority to act upon.

Naturally, Henry had no intention of warning anyone or trying to stop what was coming.

This time, he was determined to sit back and watch the show.

Strictly speaking, this was a mutant civil war.

Magneto knew perfectly well that the moment he made a move, the X-Men would inevitably stand against him.

It wasn’t simply a matter of ideological differences.

Professor X had no choice.

If he wanted to protect the mutants on the other side, he had to make his position clear.

If the government concluded that the X-Men’s inaction amounted to tacit approval of the Brotherhood’s actions, the situation of mutants within the United States would deteriorate dramatically.

As for whether the Brotherhood of Mutants or the X-Men ultimately won—

Whether their respective goals were achieved—

That would depend on their own abilities.

No wonder Magneto had excluded Henry from the start, even going so far as to deploy one of his strongest trump cards.

This was a struggle among mutant brethren.

A battle over humanity’s future on Earth.

An alien had no place in it.

When it came to understanding his position, Magneto had always been remarkably clear-headed.

That was also why he frequently set aside his pride and lent assistance to the X-Men.

He never assumed that being leader of the Brotherhood meant everyone had to follow his wishes.

Since Magneto had firmly assigned him a seat in the audience, Henry had no intention of stubbornly forcing himself onto the stage.

Even the X-Men hadn’t come looking for his help.

---

As expected, the battle erupted on Liberty Island, home of the Statue of Liberty.

Security around the area was already extremely tight.

In reality, Liberty Island wasn’t the primary defensive focus.

A nearby waterfront park was hosting an open-air reception for the world leaders, complete with a fireworks display over the harbor.

That location was the true priority.

Liberty Island, however, offered open sightlines and elevated positions suitable for sniper attacks.

Because of that, the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) and the United States Secret Service had already closed the island several days earlier, suspending all public visits.

If they actually knew they were facing mutants, both agencies possessed specialized equipment and procedures designed to deal with them.

The problem was that they didn’t know an attack was coming.

And since most mutants could still be handled with conventional weapons, police departments and military units generally didn’t keep anti-mutant equipment constantly deployed.

Besides, there was no need to exaggerate how powerful mutant abilities were.

Any defensive force caught off guard by a sufficiently powerful and unexpected strike would be breached.

Whether the attackers happened to be mutants was largely irrelevant.

---

The first people to discover that something was happening on Liberty Island weren’t government agencies.

They were journalists.

Several news organizations had obtained permission to film aerial footage of the summit from helicopters.

Originally, they had intended to cover the gathering of world leaders.

Instead, the spectacular battle unfolding on Liberty Island immediately stole their attention.

Storm’s attacks were simply too conspicuous.

At night, it was difficult to clearly see the formation of a hurricane.

But bolts of lightning descending from a clear sky?

Every longtime New Yorker knew exactly which mutant that meant.

As a result, emergency news coverage interrupted programming across virtually every television channel.

Whether Henry wanted to watch or not, there was little else on.

Since he was treating the entire thing like a soap opera anyway, he settled in with some fruit and watched the mutant war through the distant helicopter footage.

---

The Brotherhood of Mutants wore no uniforms.

But their numbers were overwhelming.

Nearly a hundred mutants of every shape and ability imaginable filled the battlefield.

Compared to them, the X-Men were dressed in matching dark-blue uniforms.

Their numbers were smaller.

Far smaller.

But every one of them was elite.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, they managed to withstand the Brotherhood’s assault while steadily pushing forward.

On the screen, Cyclops and Storm acted as the spearhead of the X-Men formation.

Their long-range attacks were devastating.

Again and again, they repelled Brotherhood advances.

Behind them stood a Chinese mutant woman capable of firing energy sparks and ionized energy spheres.

One attack traveled too slowly.

The other had limited range.

As a result, she functioned primarily as a supporting ranged attacker and defensive specialist.

Any enemies who slipped through were dealt with by Beast—who had returned to the X-Men—and Wolverine, whose adamantium claws made him a terrifying close-combat fighter.

Angel, sporting a pair of metallic wings, exploited his superior mobility to conduct hit-and-run attacks.

Jean Grey, the team’s telepath, controlled the battlefield.

---

Beast’s return to the X-Men didn’t surprise Henry.

The other two mutants did.

Where had they come from?

The Chinese woman appeared to be Jubilation Lee, codename Jubilee, the mutant who had appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse as a student at Xavier’s School alongside Cyclops and Jean Grey.

The winged mutant was clearly Angel, one of Apocalypse’s enhanced Four Horsemen.

The other three Horsemen had been Magneto, Storm, and Psylocke.

Since no mutant matching Psylocke’s description appeared on the battlefield, it seemed Angel, like Storm, had ultimately joined the X-Men.

---

The fact that seven X-Men were holding back nearly a hundred opponents demonstrated just how formidable they were.

And this was without Professor X—the greatest battlefield controller among mutants—participating at all.

Their performance also highlighted a simple truth:

Most mutants weren’t actually very powerful.

Against a veteran team like the X-Men, whose members were individually strong and battle-hardened, sheer numerical superiority wasn’t enough.

Wolverine, a familiar face from the movies but a new presence in this world, naturally caught Henry’s attention.

But his focus was drawn elsewhere.

To Jean Grey.

The Phoenix.

A Sentinel had taken one of Henry’s specially modified heat-vision blasts and immediately become a dead Sentinel.

Jean Grey had taken the same attack.

How could she possibly have emerged completely unharmed?

His own eye-related powers were still offline.

Who knew whether they would ever fully recover?

That made Jean’s condition one of the things Henry cared about most.

Yet from what he could see on television, she looked noticeably weaker than the Phoenix Force at its peak.

In fact, she might even have been weaker than the original Jean Grey before fully awakening the Phoenix.

Most of her contribution consisted of telepathic interference and battlefield control.

Occasionally she used telekinesis to repel attackers.

Meanwhile, Beast and Wolverine handled the majority of close-range combat.

Together, they maintained a six-person assault formation while Angel operated independently as a mobile skirmisher.

Unfortunately, helicopter footage alone made it impossible to accurately judge the true intensity of the fighting.

---

The battle gradually moved from the open areas of Liberty Island into the interior exhibition halls of the Statue of Liberty.

Their destination appeared to be the observation deck inside the statue’s head.

As one helicopter camera swept past the area beneath the statue’s torch, Henry noticed something extra attached to the structure.

That was probably where Magneto had installed the mutant-conversion device.

The color matched the statue closely enough that almost nobody would notice it.

Meanwhile, Selene—who had spent the past several days shamelessly staying for free meals—sat beside Katharine Hepburn.

The two women watched the mutant civil war unfolding on television with obvious enjoyment.
