Distant tales of the Dichotomy

Vili’s teacher found him the way most disasters find people, by accident, with an audience.

He had wandered into the lower market of Tohei on his second morning in a vile mood, having been refused entry to the Cradle Halls at a quarter past dawn by a serene acolyte who had informed him, with great gentleness, that a prince of the Dichotomy was still not permitted to sit in the doorway and stare at his friend. He had ended up at a little tavern at the bottom of a spiral stair, a low place with root-beams and a hundred hanging copper pots, and a sign shaped like a bowl of steaming soup.

It was called The Simmering Root, and it smelled better than any place had a right to.

Vili sat at the long table, ordered whatever the cook was making, and had just begun to drum his wired fingers on the wood when the table wobbled. One of the legs was shorter than the others. It rocked, and a jug of water slid toward the edge.

Vili did not think. He simply flicked his hand, and a thin curl of gold sand poured from his sleeve and slid under the short leg to steady it. A perfectly reasonable thing to do. It would have worked, had the sand been finer, had his control been surer, had he not still been raw from the willow. But the sand surged, the table lurched sideways, the jug crashed to the floor, and a shelf of clay bowls behind the bar went off like a string of firecrackers.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then a large wooden ladle came whistling out of the kitchen and struck Vili Wyrnia precisely on the crown of the head.

It didn’t hurt. That was the odd part. It was a very small blow, a perfectly weighted tap, delivered with such exactness that it made his eyes cross and his ears ring without leaving a mark.

“Sit down,” said a voice.

The woman in the kitchen door was short, round, and eighty if she was a day. She had thick white hair pinned up in a bun with two wooden spoons, a nose like a potato, and an apron that had seen more battles than most soldiers. A clay pipe smelling of cinnamon bark was clamped in the corner of her mouth. Three of her left fingers had been replaced with polished copper, and they glittered as she pointed the ladle at Vili’s chest.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

“I did not…”

“You threw sand at my table.”

“I was helping.”

“You were showing off. There is a difference, princeling, and the difference is about a shelf of bowls.” She had not raised her voice. She plucked the pipe from her mouth and squinted at him. “Yes. I know you. You’ve got your grandfather’s eyebrows. Wyrnia, aren’t you?”

Vili went pale. “How…”

“I cooked for your grandfather’s table for nine years, before I retired to the Mother’s kitchens.” She snorted. “Sit.”

He sat.

She set a bowl of soup in front of him. It was clear, pale, faintly gold, with a single sliver of white radish floating at its center, carved into the shape of a rose. Every petal was thinner than paper. Not one was torn.

“Eat,” she said.

Vili ate. The soup tasted like a summer morning. It tasted like the smell of rain on warm stone. It tasted like every good memory he’d ever forgotten.

“Well?” she said.

“It’s the best thing I have ever eaten,” said Vili, before he could stop himself. Then, after a moment: “How did you carve the radish?”

“With the flame of a candle,” said the old woman. “And my breath. And forty years of not being an idiot.” She sat down opposite him with a creak and knocked out her pipe on the table. “They call me Mother Sable. Nobody knows my first name, and I intend to keep it that way. I was a court magician once, in the days when the Wyrnias still had a court. I could level a castle wall in a breath.” She held up the three copper fingers and wiggled them. “Then I learned what a castle wall is for, and I learned what I cannot do, and I took up cooking.”

“Cooking?”

“You think it’s a small thing?” Her eyes glittered. “Anyone can burn down a forest. Try lighting a single candle that burns for exactly a minute and goes out, without a puff of smoke. Try peeling a grape with a thread of fire. Try salting a soup one grain at a time.” She leaned forward. “Your sand is not bad, boy. It is big. It is a hammer. You do not know how to use a needle.”

Vili said nothing. His silver-wired fingers curled slowly against the table.

“I have seen your hand,” said Mother Sable, more quietly. “The wire is good work. But wire is not skill. You will never have your grip back until you learn to feel a single grain.”

“I do not have time,” said Vili. “In six months, there is a trial.”

“You have three.” She stood, shoved the ladle into his hand, and pointed to a stack of dirty pots the height of a small child. “Kitchen boy. Dawn tomorrow. You’ll scrub until you can tell me the temperature of the water without touching it.”

“I am a prince…”

“You are a dishwasher.” She turned to go, then looked back over her shoulder, and something almost gentle crossed the deep-lined face. “Vili. Whoever taught you that halberd taught you to command. I will teach you to listen. It is harder.”
