The Surrogate He Discarded

Grandma Emelia reluctantly released Isobel and turned her attention to Morgan, as though only just noticing he was standing there.

She studied him from head to toe before a pleased smile spread across her wrinkled face.

”What a fine young man,” she said warmly. Then she glanced back at Isobel. ”Is he your husband?”

A faint smile tugged at Isobel’s lips as she shook her head.

”No, Grandma. He’s my brother.” She turned to Morgan. ”His name is Morgan Foster.”

”I see.” Grandma Emelia nodded thoughtfully. ”Then he must be from your adoptive family.”

Morgan met Isobel’s eyes.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. They didn’t need to. Their silence carried the truth they had both agreed to leave unspoken.

”That’s right, Grandma,” Morgan said with an easy smile.

There was no point burdening the old woman with the truth—that the man she had cursed only moments ago was his own father.

...

By 1:00 pm, the village chief insisted that Morgan and Isobel have lunch at his home.

Compared to the humble bamboo and nipa huts scattered throughout Greenvale, the chief’s house stood out immediately. It was the largest in the village—a sturdy cement structure with a red tiled roof that had weathered countless rainy seasons.

Though simple by city standards, it was a symbol of prosperity and the pride of the community.

The chief had personally slaughtered one of his prized chickens earlier.

His wife spent the last hour in the kitchen, slowly simmering pork and chicken in a fragrant tomato broth until the meat became melt-in-your-mouth tender.

Sweet saba bananas balanced the savory richness, while fresh pechay leaves soaked up the flavorful sauce, creating one of Greenvale’s treasured local dishes.

Meanwhile, several villagers hurriedly assembled a long makeshift dining table in the chief’s front yard using wooden planks balanced across sturdy benches. Before long, banana leaves were spread across its surface in place of tablecloths, filling the air with their fresh, earthy scent.

Isobel unpacked the takeout they had purchased on the way to the village—crispy roast chicken, several boxed dishes, an assortment of pastries, and bottles of ice-cold soft drinks.

One by one, the villagers began to arrive.

No one came empty-handed.

An elderly woman carried a basket overflowing with ripe mangoes and lanzones. Another family brought freshly harvested bananas. Someone contributed homemade rice cakes wrapped in banana leaves.

A cheerful young man jogged to the nearest coconut tree, climbed it with practiced ease, and disappeared into the swaying fronds.

Moments later, several green coconuts dropped onto the soft grass below with heavy thuds. He expertly sliced off their tops with a bolo knife, arranging them neatly so everyone could enjoy cool, sweet coconut water with the meal.

Children darted around the yard, laughing as they chased one another between the adults, while the older villagers exchanged stories and laughter as though they were welcoming relatives home after a long journey.

”Bro,” Isobel called.

Morgan instinctively turned.

A smile spread across his face before he even realized it.

Bro.

He liked the sound of it—especially when it came from Isobel. There was an affection in her voice that made the simple word feel surprisingly precious.

She stood beside him, taking in the lively gathering with eyes full of wonder.

”I’m overwhelmed by their hospitality,” she said softly. ”Everyone keeps bringing whatever they have, even though they have so little.”

Her gaze drifted over the bustling yard—the shared food, the laughter, the easy smiles that crossed every face.

”It feels like we’ve stepped into another era,” she continued. ”Somewhere people still believe that guests belong to the whole village, not just the family hosting them.”

Morgan followed her gaze.

The scene before them was simple.

No luxury.

No extravagance.

Yet there was a richness here that money could never buy.

He nodded.

”You’re right,” he said quietly. ”Places like this are becoming rare.”

...

After lunch, Isobel turned to Grandma Emelia.

”Grandma... could you take me to my mother’s grave?”

The old woman’s smile softened. She gave a quiet nod.

”I’ve been waiting for you to ask.”

The village chief offered to accompany them. The man, who was in his fifties and nearly as tall as Isobel, led the small group down a narrow footpath that wound its way south of the village.

The lively voices from the luncheon gradually faded behind them, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of birds.

Beyond a grove of acacia trees lay the village cemetery.

It was small and peaceful, with simple concrete tombs standing side by side beneath the shade of old trees.

Wildflowers bloomed between the graves, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of fresh grass through the quiet resting place.

Without hesitation, Grandma Emelia walked to a modest white tomb nestled beneath a sprawling tree whose branches stretched protectively overhead.

She rested a wrinkled hand on the weathered headstone.

”Here,” she said softly. ”This is where your mother rests.”

Isobel stepped forward.

Her eyes settled on the name carved into the marble.

Rosella Lancey.

Beside it was a carefully preserved photograph of a young woman smiling gently at the camera.

Isobel’s breath caught.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

The same expressive eyes. The same graceful nose. The same soft curve of the lips.

Looking at the photograph was like gazing into a mirror.

”That’s your mother,” Grandma Emelia whispered.

For a long moment, Isobel could only stare. Then she slowly knelt before the grave, folded her hands, and bowed her head.

No words left her lips.

She spoke only in the silence of her heart.

Mom...

I always dreamt that one day I’d meet you.

I imagined hearing your voice, hugging you, asking why we were separated.

A part of me kept hoping that somehow you were still out there... waiting for me.

A cruel part of fate denied us that chance.

A single tear escaped and fell onto the grass.

For so many years, I thought fate had abandoned me.

But now... I think it was quietly leading me here.

I found my father, Mom. He’s a good man.

I have a brother who already treats me like family, a sister I can’t wait to know better...

Her lips curved into a faint, tearful smile.

...and you have a grandson.

I wish you could have held him.

I wish he could have known his grandmother.

She gently laid her fingertips against the cool marble.

Don’t worry about me anymore.

I’m no longer alone.

The cemetery remained silent.

Only the wind stirred the leaves above, as though nature itself had paused to listen to a daughter finally introducing herself to the mother she had waited a lifetime to meet.
