Kristoffer immediately wrapped his tiny fingers around Morgan’s index finger and let out a delighted giggle.

A faint smile touched Morgan’s lips. The first real smile he had managed all day.

Carefully, he lifted his son closer to the woman lying motionless in the hospital bed.

”Look, Kit,” he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. ”Mommy’s finally home.”

Kristoffer blinked his large eyes at Kristine, studying her with innocent curiosity.

Then Morgan gently guided his tiny hand toward her face. The moment Kristoffer’s fingers brushed her cheek, something inside Morgan clenched.

For months, he had dreamed of this.

Dreamed of seeing his wife and children together. A moment he had almost convinced himself would never come.

Beside him, Isobel carried Kirsten closer.

”Baby Kat,” she murmured, pressing a kiss to the baby’s forehead. ”Come welcome Mommy home.”

”Eeeh... gaa... gaa...”

Kirsten answered with an excited coo, her tiny legs kicking happily.

The sound breathed life into the bedroom.

For the first time since they arrived, the suffocating heaviness seemed to ease.

Isobel quietly pulled a chair closer and sat beside the bed.

With trembling fingers, she carefully pulled Kristine’s hand from beneath the blanket.

The skin felt cool.

A lump rose in her throat.

Swallowing hard, she guided Kristine’s hand toward Kirsten. Almost instantly, the baby wrapped her fingers around her mother’s thumb.

As though she recognized her. As though some invisible bond had never been broken.

No one noticed the faint twitch that followed.

Not even Isobel.

”Eeeeh!”

Kirsten squealed happily, her face lighting up.

Morgan’s breath caught. His eyes remained fixed on the sight before him.

His wife... His daughter...

Connected for the very first time.

A profound silence settled over the room.

A silence that was tender and fragile.

Sacred!

For several heartbeats, nothing else existed.

No one noticed what happened next. No one except fate.

As Kirsten continued clutching her mother’s hand, one of Kristine’s fingers moved again.

This time it wasn’t a twitch. It was unmistakable. A slow, deliberate curl.

Anyone looking directly at her would have seen it.

But no one was.

Their attention remained on the twins.

”Baby Kat, do you want to lie beside Mommy?” Isobel asked softly.

”Gaa... gaa...”

The baby responded immediately.

Isobel glanced at Morgan asking for permission.

Morgan looked at Kristine before lowering his gaze to their daughter.

His eyes were filled with emotions too complicated for words.

Hope and longing.

Slowly, he nodded.

Isobel carefully laid Kirsten beside her mother, making sure not to disturb the IV line and monitoring wires.

Then she looked at Morgan.

”You should put Kit beside her too.”

Morgan hesitated only a second before obeying. Perhaps it was foolish. Perhaps it was impossible.

But every mother deserved to feel her children close.

And maybe...

Just maybe...

Love could reach places medicine couldn’t.

Soon, both babies were nestled against Kristine’s sides.

Neither fussed. Neither cried. Instead, they babbled happily as though introducing themselves.

Kirsten grabbed a handful of her mother’s hospital gown.

On the opposite side, Kristoffer copied his sister and refused to let go.

Morgan pulled a chair closer and sat beside the bed.

He reached for Kristine’s hand.

The hand he had held through dates, promises, wedding vows, and countless ordinary days he now missed with every breath.

He enclosed it between both of his.

Then lowered his head.

”Honey,” he whispered. ”Please wake up soon.”

His voice cracked and the room fell silent.

”You’ve been sleeping for far too long.”

His thumb stroked the back of her hand.

”I missed you.”

His eyes stinged.

”Our babies miss you.”

As if understanding every word, Kristoffer immediately chimed in.

”Eeeeh guh guh!”

Morgan let out a shaky laugh.

Kirsten quickly joined her brother.

”Ahhh gaaah!”

For the first time in months, the room echoed with the sounds of a complete family.

And beneath Morgan’s trembling fingers—

Kristine’s hand moved.

...

Kristine.

Kristine wasn’t trapped in darkness. She was trapped in an endless ocean beneath a moonless sky.

She drifted somewhere between the surface and the abyss, weightless and alone. Above her, life still existed. Voices traveled through the water like distant whale songs, haunting and beautiful.

Always just beyond reach.

Sometimes she thought she heard laughter. Sometimes crying. Sometimes silence.

Then she heard someone call her name.

The sound rippled through the vast ocean around her.

”Honey...”

Her heart trembled. She knew that voice.

Morgan.

Her Morgan. The love of her life.

A fierce longing surged through her. She wanted to open her eyes. She wanted to see his face... to lose herself in those dark obsidian eyes that had always made her feel safe.

But her body wouldn’t obey. Her eyelids felt impossibly heavy, as though they had been sealed shut.

No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t move.

”Morgan...”

She tried to answer. No sound came out.

The ocean swallowed her voice before it could reach him.

Then another sound drifted toward her.

Small. Soft. Unfamiliar...

Yet it tugged at her hearstring.

”Gaa... gaa...”

The words made no sense. They were little more than bubbles rising through the water. Yet somehow they reached deeper than anything else.

Another tiny voice followed.

”Eeeh... guh...”

The sounds echoed around her. ℯℯ𝑙.

Closer this time. Warmer.

Something brushed against her cheek.

A feather-soft touch.

Kristine stilled. Then she felt it again.

A tiny hand...small, warm and real.

Another touch followed. This time around her thumb. Tiny fingers curled around it. Holding on and refusing to let go.

A strange ache spread through her chest.

It wasn’t the distant warmth she occasionally felt while drifting through the darkness.

This was different. This was close enough to touch. Close enough to feel. Close enough to follow.

”Gaa... gaa...”

The tiny voice rang out again.

Clearer than before. Clearer than the sound of the ocean.

Brighter than the sliver of light that sifted through the darkness.

Clearer than her own thoughts.

For a brief moment, the surface appeared above her.

Silver and shimmering.

Hope exploded inside her.

She kicked toward it. Reached for it. Fought against the crushing depths.

But the ocean dragged her back down.

The light vanished. The voices became distant once more.

And she drifted, again. She didn’t know how long.

Was it just minutes or days or months or years?

Time no longer existed.
