I Enslaved The Goddess Who Summoned Me

Chapter 804: The Net Closes

By the time Nathan left Sakura’s cottage, the sun had begun to sink behind the trees.

The forest was slowly turning gold beneath the evening light, but the Shinobi Village had lost the quiet warmth it usually carried at that hour. People still prepared food. Children still played near the houses under the watchful eyes of their mothers. Smoke still rose from the cooking fires.

Yet beneath that ordinary life, something else had taken hold.

Tension.

Everyone knew that the plan had begun moving.

Messengers had already left for the roads surrounding Minami Kyoto. Shinobi scouts were watching the western route near Kajiya Hara. Others had entered the nearby towns disguised as travelers, merchants, farmers, and laborers. Every person had been given a role, no matter how small.

A few whispers in the right inn.

A frightened report carried to the right captain.

A wagon seen moving along the western road.

A red armored soldier buying supplies in a village where he had no business being.

None of it looked like much on its own.

Together, it would become a storm.

Nathan walked back through the village with his hands resting at his sides. The conversation with Sakura remained in his mind, though he did not let it distract him. She was safer now. At least she understood that he did not intend to hand her life over to people who would see only Norihiro’s blood in her veins.

That was enough for the moment.

The war waiting ahead demanded the rest of his attention.

When he reached the path near the edge of the village, he found Yukihime and Ayame still there.

Yukihime stood with her arms crossed, her expression clearly displeased. Ayame, meanwhile, looked entirely too amused by something.

Nathan did not need to ask what had happened.

Yukihime saw him first.

“You took longer than expected, Nathan sama.”

“I had things to discuss.”

Ayame smiled warmly. “Did Sakura feel better?”

“She understands more than before,” Nathan replied. “That is enough for now.”

Ayame nodded, her smile growing softer.

Yukihime stepped closer to Nathan at once, reclaiming her place beside him as if she had been waiting for exactly that opportunity. Ayame watched the movement with an amused expression but did not comment.

Nathan looked toward the road leading away from the village.

“We leave now.”

Yukihime’s eyes brightened slightly.

Ayame’s expression changed.

The playful warmth faded from her face as the reality of those words settled between them. She had known Nathan would leave the village soon. He needed to be closer to Minami Kyoto. He needed to be ready when Norihiro finally moved.

Still, knowing it and seeing him prepare to go were different things.

Ayame stepped toward him.

“You will be careful,” she said.

Nathan looked at her.

“I will.”

“That is not enough.”

A faint smile touched his lips. “It is the answer I have.”

Ayame sighed quietly, then reached out and adjusted the collar of his clothes where it had shifted near his neck. Her fingers paused close to the purple mark left by Yorimasa’s poison.

The wound had faded, but not completely.

“You are still not fully recovered,” she said.

“I will manage.”

Ayame’s eyes narrowed slightly. “That is what you always say.”

Nathan did not deny it.

For a moment, Ayame stood before him, looking as though she wanted to say more. Then she leaned close and pressed a brief kiss against his cheek.

“Come back,” she whispered.

Nathan’s expression softened.

“I will.”

Yukihime watched them with narrowed eyes, but she remained quiet this time. Perhaps she understood that Ayame was not trying to claim something from Nathan out of jealousy alone.

She was afraid.

Everyone was.

Nathan and Yukihime left the village shortly afterward, taking the forest path toward the nearest town east of Minami Kyoto. Genzo had arranged horses and a small abandoned house where they could stay without attracting attention. It was close enough to the city for messengers to find them quickly, but far enough from the main road that Norihiro’s scouts would have little reason to investigate it.

As they rode beneath the darkening sky, Yukihime sat behind Nathan with her arms around his waist.

For once, she did not speak much.

Nathan could feel that she was thinking.

“What is it?” he asked eventually.

Yukihime rested her chin lightly against his shoulder.

“That woman loves you.”

Nathan kept his eyes on the road ahead.

“Yes.”

“And you love her too.”

“Yes.”

Yukihime fell quiet again.

Nathan expected jealousy. Perhaps another sulk, another cold remark about Ayame’s boldness.

Instead, Yukihime only tightened her hold around him.

“I will protect her too,” she said after a while.

Nathan glanced back slightly.

Yukihime’s face remained calm.

Nathan reached back and rested one hand over hers.

“Thank you.”

Yukihime smiled against his shoulder.

The next morning, Norihiro stood before the western gate of Minami Kyoto.

The city had changed overnight.

More guards stood along the walls. Archers had taken positions above the gatehouse. The merchants entering from the western road were searched one by one, their carts inspected by soldiers who had suddenly become far more suspicious of every sack, crate, and traveler.

The people noticed.

They always noticed.

A city could feel fear before anyone said the word aloud.

Merchants exchanged worried looks as soldiers searched their goods. Farmers coming in with vegetables and grain spoke in quiet voices, wondering why the gates had become so heavily guarded. Some had heard rumors already. Samurai were gathering near Kajiya Hara. Sadamasa had turned against Norihiro. Weapons were being carried west.

No one knew what was true.

That made it worse.

Norihiro stood beneath the gatehouse in dark armor, his hand resting against the hilt of his sword.

Kazuma approached from behind him with another report.

“My lord.”

Norihiro did not turn.

“Speak.”

“Our scouts returned from the western towns.”

“And?”

Kazuma unfolded the message.

“They found evidence that weapons are being moved from Kajiya Hara. There are also reports of Urakami soldiers in at least three villages along the western road.”

“How many?”

“No one agrees on the number.”

Norihiro’s jaw tightened.

“Give me the reports.”

Kazuma handed him the parchment.

Norihiro read it in silence.

One scout claimed to have seen two thousand soldiers.

Another believed the number was closer to four thousand.

A third had seen red armored men buying rice, arrows, horses, and medicine from several towns.

The numbers were uncertain.

The movement was not.

Sadamasa had betrayed him.

Norihiro could not yet see the full shape of the betrayal, but it was there.

The forge lord had supplied his weapons for years. Sadamasa knew the South’s roads. He knew the weaknesses around Minami Kyoto. He knew how much Norihiro had prepared.

If Sadamasa was now arming Urakami, then the Akamine Clan was not merely watching the South from afar.

They were coming for it.

A cold smile appeared on Norihiro’s face.

“So they finally decided to show themselves.”

Kazuma watched him carefully.

“My lord, should we close the western gate completely?”

“No.”

Kazuma blinked. “No?”

“If we close the gates, the people will panic. They will think we are already afraid.”

Norihiro folded the report.

“Let the merchants enter. Let the farmers enter. Search them, but do not stop trade. Minami Kyoto must look strong.”

“Yes, my lord.”

Norihiro turned away from the gate.

“Call Captain Jiro. Bring the commanders to the war room.”

Kazuma bowed and hurried off.

Norihiro looked toward the western horizon.

The mountains could not be seen from the city, but he knew they were there. Beyond them lay Kajiya Hara. Beyond that, the northern lands and the samurai clans who believed they had the right to decide Kastoria’s future.

They thought he would wait.

They thought he would sit behind his walls and let them gather an army large enough to crush him.

They did not understand him.

Norihiro had not built his power by waiting for enemies to strike.

He had built it by striking first.

°°°°

Far west of Minami Kyoto, Urakami stood within a temporary camp of red banners and iron armor.

The camp had been raised near a wooded ridge where the road toward Kajiya Hara opened into wide grasslands. His men had arrived in groups during the last two days, careful not to march in one great line that would reveal their strength too soon.

There were still nowhere near ten thousand soldiers gathered there.

Not yet.

But there were enough.

Urakami’s advance force had reached nearly two thousand men, most of them trained samurai, mounted soldiers, and hardened warriors from his clan’s territories. They had set up tents beneath the trees, prepared food stores, and checked the weapons arriving from Sadamasa’s forges.

Urakami stood beside a long table beneath the command tent, examining one of the new swords.

The blade caught the morning light.

It was well made.

Better than he expected.

He ran his thumb near the guard, then gave a pleased hum.

“Sadamasa may be a weak little lord,” he said, “but his smiths know their craft.”

One of his officers bowed.

“The armor is good as well, Urakami-sama. The men are impressed.”

“They should be.”

Urakami handed the sword back.

“Tell them this is only the beginning. Once Minami Kyoto falls, the South will understand who truly holds power.”

His officer hesitated.

“There are rumors that Norihiro has reinforced his gates.”

Urakami laughed.

“Of course he has. The coward has heard we are coming.”

“He may have more soldiers than we expected.”

“He may have twice as many.”

Urakami turned toward the open side of the tent, where his red banners stirred in the wind.

“He is still only a Daimyo.”

His officer lowered his head.

Urakami’s smile sharpened.

“And I am not bringing him a negotiation. I am bringing him the end of his little kingdom.”

The officer bowed and left.

Urakami remained alone for a moment.

Then he looked toward the road east.

He had not yet received the final message from Sadamasa. The full shipment of weapons was still being prepared. His larger force waited farther north, ready to march once he called them.

But he could already smell victory.

Norihiro would either hide in Minami Kyoto or ride out in fear.

Either choice would make him look weak.

Urakami did not realize that another pair of eyes watched his camp from the trees beyond the ridge.

A shinobi lay flat against a branch high above the ground, his body hidden beneath leaves and shadow. He had been there since before sunrise. He counted the men. Watched the supply wagons. Marked the positions of the mounted soldiers and the officers’ tents.

Then, once he had seen enough, he slipped down from the tree without making a sound.

By noon, Genzo would have the report.

By sunset, Nathan would know it too.

In the abandoned house outside Minami Kyoto, Nathan sat across from Genzo’s messenger as the report was read aloud.

Yukihime stood beside the window, watching the road outside.

The house was small and plain, once belonging to a farmer who had moved away after the last poor harvest. Its wooden walls creaked whenever the wind moved through the fields. A single lantern hung from one beam, though it was not yet dark enough to light it.

Nathan listened without interrupting.

“Urakami has nearly two thousand men at the western ridge,” the messenger said. “They have received the first weapons from Kajiya Hara. More are expected. Their camp is well organized, but they are not moving yet.”

“And Norihiro?” Nathan asked.

“His city is preparing. The western gate is reinforced. Scouts have been sent toward Kajiya Hara, and three thousand soldiers are being gathered inside Minami Kyoto.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

It was happening.

Not as quickly as he wanted, perhaps, but close enough.

Norihiro had heard the rumors.

Urakami had begun gathering his advance force.

Both men were watching the same road.

Both believed they were preparing to take control of the situation.

Nathan stood and walked toward the table where a rough map had been spread.

Genzo’s messenger moved closer.

Nathan placed a small wooden marker near the western ridge.

“Urakami is here.”

Then another marker over Minami-Kyoto.

“Norihiro is here.”

His finger moved toward the stretch of open land between them.

“This is where they will meet.”

Yukihime turned away from the window.

“How do we make them move?”

Nathan looked at the messenger.

“Norihiro’s scouts need to find something.”

The man nodded slowly. “What?”

“A letter.”

Yukihime’s eyes narrowed with interest.

Nathan’s expression remained calm.

“A false order from Urakami. Something written as though it was meant for one of his officers. It will say that the advance force is only bait and that the rest of the samurai army will march in two days.”

The messenger understood quickly.

“If Norihiro finds it, he will believe Urakami intends to trap him between the advance force and the larger army.”

“Yes.”

“And he will attack before the rest can arrive.”

Nathan nodded.

“He will think he has one chance to destroy Urakami’s force before it grows too large.”

Yukihime’s lips curved into a faint smile.

“And Urakami?”

“He will receive a different report.”

Nathan moved the Urakami marker a little farther east.

“He will hear that Norihiro has sent soldiers west, but that the Daimyo himself remains in Minami Kyoto. Urakami will think he has frightened Norihiro into hiding. He will advance to pressure the city and claim an easy victory.”

The messenger looked down at the map.

“But Norihiro will be riding toward him.”

“Exactly.”

The two armies would move toward one another believing they had the advantage.

Norihiro would believe he was ambushing a smaller force before Urakami’s army arrived.

Urakami would believe he was marching against scattered defenders while Norihiro hid behind his walls.

Neither man would understand that their confidence had been planted carefully inside them.

Nathan looked at the messenger.

“Tell Genzo to begin the final part. The false letter must reach Norihiro’s scouts tomorrow. Urakami’s report must reach him by the same evening.”

The shinobi bowed deeply.

“At once.”

He left the house quickly.

Nathan remained beside the map.

Yukihime stepped close beside him, hugging his arm.
