Investing In Overlooked Women: I Get Cashback On Every Glow-Up

Benita looked at me one last time. I gave her a subtle, knowing nod, and the hesitation in her eyes melted away into quiet focus. She stood up, grabbed her shears, and walked toward the studio floor ready to face the lesson head-on.

I didn’t move an inch. Benita had admitted she was struggling, so I leaned back against the workstation and kept my eyes locked on every single motion.

Jean-Luc stood behind her at the mannequin, unrolling a bolt of heavy muslin. He began demonstrating the French moulage technique, pinning the fabric along rigid, traditional grain lines with mathematical precision. His hands moved with clean, textbook perfection.

”No, no, Mademoiselle,” Jean-Luc corrected, stepping in the second Benita tried to gather the fabric with an aggressive, asymmetrical twist. He reached over, pulling the muslin flat again. ”You are forcing the tension. The French bias requires absolute balance. Straight lines, clean tucks. Like this. Toujours respect the grain.”

Benita’s shoulders slumped. She tried to follow his instructions, but her hands looked stiff, unnatural, and restrained. Watching her try to force her raw, rebellious instinct into his century-old Paris playbook, it suddenly clicked.

Jean-Luc wasn’t just teaching her technique—he was accidentally smothering her style. He was trying to sand off her razor-sharp edges and turn her into a conventional, polished tailor. That was why she felt like she couldn’t learn it. She wasn’t fighting the fabric; she was fighting him.

”Hold on,” I said, my voice cutting through the quiet studio like a blade.

Both of them froze. Jean-Luc turned, blinking behind his wire-framed glasses. ”Monsieur Ethan?”

I stepped straight into the space between them, looking Jean-Luc dead in the eye with zero room for debate.

”Let’s set the terms of engagement right here and now,” I said calmly, but with an unshakeable boundary in my tone. ”You were hired to teach her mechanical mastery and structural fundamentals—how to hold a seam under tension, how to balance weight, and how to execute flawless stitching. You were not hired to direct her artistic vision. Do not soften her drapes, do not flatten her cuts, and do not try to make her conform to traditional Paris standards.”

Jean-Luc opened his mouth to protest, his mustache twitching. ”But Monsieur, the rules of classic haute couture—”

”The rules are your tools, not her cage,” I cut in sharply. ”She uses them how she sees fit. Keep your distance on the creative choices and stick strictly to technical support.”

Jean-Luc swallowed hard, recognizing the absolute line I’d just drawn. He took a respectful step back, nodding quietly. ”Understood, Monsieur.”

I turned directly to Benita, whose breath was hitched in her throat.

”Forget his straight lines,” I told her, a subtle smirk spreading across my face. ”Do it your way.”

Her eyes lit up with an instant, blazing spark of freedom. The invisible weight holding her back evaporated on the spot.

She grabbed the muslin, ignored the traditional grain line completely, and yanked the fabric diagonally across the form. She slammed three brass pins into place at an impossible, defying angle, sliced a jagged line down the center with her shears, and pulled the raw edges into a wild, breathtaking cascade.

Jean-Luc gasped softly—not in horror this time, but in genuine, stunned shock.

Without the fear of failing his rigid standards, Benita’s hands moved in a total, hypnotic flow state.

She was using Jean-Luc’s pin control and tension logic, but applying it to her own chaotic, brilliant vision. The fabric didn’t look forced anymore—it looked alive.

Jean-Luc stood there in dead silence, his jaw literally slack as he stared at the mannequin. The wire-framed glasses slid down to the tip of his nose, but he didn’t even bother to push them back up.

Standing on the form was a piece that defied everything he’d spent thirty years believing about fashion. It wasn’t just that Benita had grasped his French technique—she had taken his entire lifetime of knowledge, torn it apart, and rebuilt it into something infinitely more dangerous, elegant, and impossible. She hadn’t just replicated his methods; she had completely evolved them, shattering his technical ceiling right in front of his eyes.

”Mon dieu...” Jean-Luc finally breathed, his voice barely a rasp. He looked at his own hands, then up at Benita, shaking his head in absolute, humbled awe. ”Decades... it took me decades to understand balance like that. And you... you just remade the rules in twenty minutes.”

Benita stood beside the mannequin, shears resting loosely in her grip, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. The exhaustion was gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakeable confidence. She didn’t look like a nervous factory girl trying to prove herself anymore. She looked like a master standing over her domain.

I walked up beside her, looking at the finished drape, then turned to Jean-Luc with a cold smirk.

”Told you,” I said smoothly. ”She’s not here to follow the industry. She’s here to run it.”

Jean-Luc gave a low, deeply respectful bow to Benita—no dramatic flair this time, just pure, genuine reverence from one creator to another. ”It is an honor to assist you, Mademoiselle Benita. Whatever you need for this collection, my hands are entirely at your service.”

Benita looked at me, a radiant, proud smile breaking across her face. ”We’re ready for the showcase, Ethan. Bring on the runway.”

Next day.

I had the chauffeur pull the Maybach up to the private terminal, and within twenty minutes, we were cruising out toward the coast on a chartered luxury yacht—just the two of us, completely away from the city noise, heavy fabrics, and endless sketchbook pages.

The afternoon sun was soft and warm, reflecting off the deep blue water as a gentle sea breeze swept across the deck. Soft, ambient R&B hummed quietly through the yacht’s hidden speakers, mixing with the rhythmic splash of the waves.

Benita sat back in a plush, cream-leather lounger on the upper deck, clad in an oversized silk shirt and sunglasses, holding a crystal glass of chilled white peach mocktail. She took a slow sip, leaned her head back against the cushion, and let out a long, sigh of pure, unfiltered peace.

”Ethan...” she murmured, a soft, sleepy smile tugging at her lips. ”I don’t think I’ve felt this relaxed in my entire life. No sewing machines humming, no pins sticking into my fingers... just the ocean.”

”That was the whole point,” I said, kicking my feet up on the low teak table next to a spread of fresh berries, artisan cheeses, and ice-cold drinks. ”You’ve been burning the candle at both ends. Before you blow everyone’s minds at the showcase next month, you needed a total reset.”

A private chef on board brought out fresh, light grilled seafood skewers drizzled with lemon butter, alongside crisp summer salads. We ate lazily, laughing and talking about everything except fashion—talking about stupid childhood stories, weird music playlists, and how crazy the last few weeks had been.

After lunch, Benita kicked off her sandals and walked over to the edge of the deck, leaning against the teak railing as the wind caught her dark hair. She looked out at the endless horizon, the golden sunlight painting her skin, completely transformed from the stressed, hesitant girl who had walked into my office just days ago.

I walked over and leaned against the railing beside her, taking in the quiet view.

”You ready for what comes after this?” I asked softly, glancing over at her.

She looked at me through her sunglasses, a warm, confident spark shining in her eyes. ”With you in my corner? I’m not scared of anything anymore.”

”Good,” I said, setting my glass down on the teak table with a soft clink as the golden hour light faded over the water. ”Now that your head is clear, let’s talk timeline.”

Benita stretched lazily, a content sigh leaving her lips. ”I’m all ears.”

”You have exactly one week to finish the full collection for the runway.”

She froze mid-stretch. Her sunglasses slipped a few inches down the bridge of her nose, her jaw dropping open as she stared at me like I’d just spoken in ancient Sumerian.

”One... what?!” she practically shrieked, her voice cracking over the sound of the ocean. ”Ethan! One week?! To cut, drape, stitch, and finish a full haute couture lineup from scratch?!”

I pulled my phone out of my pocket, tapped the screen, and showed her the digital countdown timer already ticking away in bold red numbers.

”Tick-tock, Benita,” I said with a slow, ruthless smirk, standing up from the deck railing. ”Chilling is over. The luxury life is great, but now you gotta earn the crown.”

”Ethan!” she groaned, burying her face in her hands, though a desperate, electric laugh bubbled out of her chest. ”One week! I’m going to be living on espresso and sheer panic!”

”You’ve got Jean-Luc, a state-of-the-art studio on the 58th floor, unlimited budget, and a driver waiting at the marina,” I replied smoothly, giving her a gentle nudge toward the lower deck. ”You proved yesterday you can do in twenty minutes what takes Paris veterans twenty years. Seven days is luxury for someone with your hands.”

She took a deep breath, tossed her head back, and pushed her sunglasses up into her hair. The lazy vacation vibe vanished in an instant, replaced by that lethal, laser-focused hunger I loved to see.

”If I die of exhaustion on the atelier floor, I’m haunting you,” she threatened, pointing a finger at me as we headed toward the yacht’s cabin to head back to shore. ”Need Jean to have the machines ready. I’m starting tonight!”
