Investing In Overlooked Women: I Get Cashback On Every Glow-Up

Olden let out a quiet, amused breath and smoothed his jacket. ”So I’m not running a line, and I’m not breaking a sweat. What exactly is my role tonight, Ethan?”

”Tonight, Chef, you are our guest of honor,” I said, walking side-by-side with him out of the private lounge and heading toward LUMEN’s shimmering glass doors. ”You take a front-row seat at the chef’s table. You taste Patricia’s menu, and when the top food critics in this city realize Durev’s gala is a ship without a captain, you give them an honest, unfiltered judgment of her work.”

Olden’s eyes gleamed with razor-sharp interest. ”An official endorsement from the pass. I can certainly do that.”

”And one more thing,” I added, pushing open the glass entrance to LUMEN. ”Be ready for a flood. We prepared this dining room for a full gala capacity—grand floral arrangements, high-society table settings, elite floor staff—even though we didn’t announce one.”

Olden looked around the glowing, white-alabaster room in awe. ”You set up a gala-level venue without listing a party?”

”Durev’s gala next door is going to collapse within forty-five minutes,” I smiled, looking toward the open kitchen where Patricia was already leading her team. ”When his high-paying guests, celebrities, and critics realize there’s no executive chef running his pass, they’re going to walk out in frustration. And when they look down the strip, LUMEN will be the only beacon lit up on the oceanfront.”

When we stepped into the kitchen, Patricia looked up from the pass. Her eyes widened in absolute shock as she saw Olden Mante walking in right beside me—not in his chef whites, but in a tailored suit, taking a seat at the main table overlooking the glass showroom.

”Ethan... what is he doing here?” she whispered, running over to the counter, her voice breathless. ”Isn’t he supposed to be at Ocean Front?!”

”He was,” I said smoothly, leaning over the counter and giving her a calm, deadly grin. ”Until he realized Durev wasn’t worth his time. Olden is sitting at table one tonight as your lead critic. The entire room is set. Durev’s guests are going to pour through those doors any minute now.”

Patricia looked at Olden, who gave her a single, sharp nod of total confidence from his table.

The fire in her eyes ignited like a inferno. She turned back to Matt, Elena, and the line, her voice booming through the glass showroom with unshakeable authority.

”BRIGADE! WE HAVE A FULL HOUSE COMING! STAND BY FOR FIRE!”

”YES, CHEF!” the entire kitchen roared back.

Outside, right on cue, the commotion started at Ocean Front Restaurant. Shouts of frustration, confused valets, and furious patrons began spilling out onto the street as Durev’s kitchen plunged into complete, leaderless chaos next door.

And just as I planned, the flood of elite guests began turning their heads toward the glowing, breathtaking sanctuary of LUMEN.

Flashes of blinding light illuminated the grand marble steps of Ocean Front Restaurant as the city’s elite filtered through the heavy brass doors. Billionaire tech magnates, prominent culinary critics, and high-society influencers stepped off the red carpet, greeted by crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the high expectation of an unmatchable evening. Durev stood near the foyer in his tailored tuxedo, his smile wide and arrogant as he shook hands, accepted congratulations, and soaked in the prestige.

He had built this entire night on a single promise: the legendary Olden Mante was in his kitchen, crafting a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience.

”Ah, Durev, brilliant venue!” a prominent city council member beamed, patting him on the shoulder. ”We can’t wait to see what Mante has in store for us tonight.”

”Only the absolute best for my guests,” Durev replied smoothly, swirling his glass. ”Chef Mante is finishing the final prep as we speak. Prepare to have your palates ruined for any other restaurant on this coast.”

Excusing himself with a confident bow, Durev stepped through the heavy double doors leading into the back-of-house.

The moment the swinging doors clicked shut behind him, his arrogant smile violently vanished.

The kitchen was in absolute, unmitigated ruin.

Panicked shouts echoed off the stainless steel walls. The air was thick with the acrid stench of scorched butter and burning garlic. Grease coated the line, ticket printers were spewing out long, unattended white ribbons of orders onto the floor, and line cooks were running into each other like headless chickens.

”Where the hell is he?!” Durev roared, his face flushing deep red as he grabbed a terrified station cook by the collar. ”Where is Olden?!”

”He... he hasn’t shown up, sir!” the cook stuttered, his hands shaking as he tried to manage three scorched pans at once. ”His car was spotted down the strip twenty minutes ago, but he never walked through the service entrance!”

”Call him again!” Durev screamed, slamming his fist onto the stainless steel pass, causing a stack of plates to rattle violently. ”I paid him! He has a contract!”

He snatched his phone from his pocket, dialing frantically. Straight to voicemail.

Panic—cold, sharp, and suffocating—clutched Durev’s chest. The main dining room was completely packed with eighty of the most influential, unforgiving figures in the region. The grand tasting menu was scheduled to start dropping courses ten minutes ago.

”Chef Durev!” the floor manager burst through the kitchen doors, sweat ruining his slicked-back hair. ”Table four is demanding the first course! Table nine’s critic is asking why service hasn’t started! They’re getting impatient!”

”Get out!” Durev barked, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

He looked around the disaster zone. Pans were smoking, sauces were separating into greasy puddles, and without Olden’s command, the understaffed brigade had completely fallen apart. Durev hadn’t run a live line service in years; his entire career was built on taking credit for Patricia’s execution while he handled the politics. He didn’t know how to fix a split emulsion, let alone balance eighty high-stakes plates simultaneously.

”Work!” Durev shrieked, tying a white apron over his custom suit in a desperate frenzy. ”Plate whatever we have! Drag the fish out! Fire the sauce!”

”Sir, the fish isn’t resting, and the reduction is completely burnt—”

”I DON’T CARE!” Durev screamed, his eyes wildly bloodshot. ”PLATE IT AND SEND IT OUT!”

Ten minutes later, the first wave of dishes hit the main dining room.

It was an unmitigated disaster.

At table two, a renowned food critic raised her fork, gently cutting into a piece of sea bass, only for rubbery, undercooked flesh to give way under the blade. The sauce pooling beneath it was broken, separating into unsightly yellow oil.

At the center table, a prominent real estate mogul took a single bite of a lukewarm, rubbery steak, instantly spitting it into his napkin with a look of profound disgust.

”Is this a joke?” a voice boomed from the center of the dining room.

”This is cold!” another guest snapped, pushing their plate away. ”Where is Olden Mante? This tastes like cafeteria garbage!”

Whispers spread through the floor like wildfire. Flashes from phone cameras began clicking—not at the glamour of the evening, but at the hideous, unpalatable plates resting on crisp white tablecloths.

Durev stood behind the service glass, watching his entire empire, his pride, and his night collapse into total public humiliation. And just as the first group of furious guests stood up from their tables to demand their money back, someone near the front window pointed out toward the oceanfront avenue.

”Look down the strip... what is that place?”

Through the glass, the frustrated crowd caught sight of a blinding, elegant beacon just two doors down: LUMEN, its floor-to-ceiling glass showroom glowing like a diamond against the night sky, fully staffed, flawlessly organized, and completely ready to receive them.
