Pirate: Crew of Desire and Bonds

Aria closed her eyes.

But the cave did not disappear.

If anything, it became clearer.

She felt the rough stone beneath her feet, the cool air against her skin, and the familiar weight of Jake’s sword in her hands.

Her new body spoke to her through small, honest signals: her balance, the distance between herself and her opponent, the rhythm of her breathing, and the slightest shift of muscle.

Everything was already there, but she only had to notice it.

Just then... Beneath those sensations, something older surfaced in the quiet of her mind.

A memory... and a promise.

Her fingers tightened around the hilt as the world around her gradually became still, like the surface of an undisturbed lake.

There were no unnecessary thoughts or hesitation, no frantic attempt to predict what would happen next.

There was only dead calm.

And beneath that calm was something she had forgotten.

Then, an old voice echoed through her mind.

The voice she had heard throughout years of training.

It was... her old master.

’Again.’

For a moment, she felt as though he stood before her once more, with a wooden sword in his hand.

’Stop thinking. Focus. You’re thinking too much. Issen isn’t about thinking. It’s about... seeing.’

The wooden sword rested loosely in his grip.

’See your opponent’s stance. See his breathing. See his weight. See where his eyes are looking.’

He took one slow step forward.

’Before he moves, his body has already told you what he intends to do.’

Swish!

The wooden sword stopped just short of her throat.

’Issen means ending the exchange with one decisive action. Do not chase your opponent’s sword. Do not waste movement. And do not fight against his strength. Let him enter your range, then take his opening.’

She remembered another lesson, the one she had struggled with the most.

She had once asked, ”What if my opponent is stronger than me?”

Her master had simply smiled.

’Then don’t compete with his strength.’

”...What if he is faster?”

’Don’t compete with his speed.’

She had frowned.

”Then what should I compete with?”

He had looked at her for a long time.

’Nothing.’

”Nothing?”

’You don’t need to compete with anything. You only need to strike at the right moment.’

At the time, those words had seemed impossible.

She had spent years trying to become stronger, forcing herself to move faster, swing harder, and push past every limit.

Whenever she found a weakness, she tried to overcome it through sheer effort.

She had believed a true swordsman had to be stronger, faster, and better than the person standing across from them.

But now, after her transformation and everything she had experienced, she finally understood.

A sword did not need to overpower another sword.

And a swordsman did not need to match an opponent in every measure.

Strength was only strength, and speed was only speed.

What mattered was... the moment the sword needed to move.

Her master’s lessons had never been about making her stronger.

They had been about teaching her how to... see.

At those conclusion,

Something shifted.

With her eyes still closed, the world no longer felt like darkness.

The cave receded, its stone walls, the ground beneath her feet, and the faint movement of air all growing distant.

Then a figure appeared before her.

It was Jake.

She saw his silhouette clearly, but it was not the Jake she had been looking at a moment ago.

This time, she perceived what lay beneath the surface: his presence, his strength, and the sheer weight of his existence.

Her mind traced every detail of him: his stance, his breathing, the distribution of his weight, and the slightest movement of his body.

And she understood.

...Jake was strong.

No... Even that word was too small.

What she was seeing was far more frightening.

Her fingers tightened around the sword.

For a moment, she could not move, as if she were standing before an enormous beast that had not yet shown its fangs.

Jake released no killing intent.

He threatened nothing as he simply stood there.

Yet the deeper she looked, the more overwhelming he became, like an abyss whose surface appeared calm and ordinary while something vast and immeasurable waited beneath it.

Every instinct in her newly transformed body warned her to be careful.

And yet... her heart beat faster.

’So this is Jake?’

For the first time, she understood the difference between knowing that someone was strong and truly perceiving their strength.

There was nothing she could find.

His body was not hiding anything from her.

There was simply no opening.

She swallowed.

If she fought him now, she would not know where the battle would begin, what he would do, or whether her sword could reach him before his could reach her.

For the first time since opening her eyes in this new world, Aria felt fear.

Not the fear of being weak or losing, but something more instinctive: the fear of standing before something she could not understand.

And yet, that realization did not make her retreat.

Instead, it brought an unexpected calm.

Her master’s words returned to her.

You don’t need to compete with anything.

Aria loosened her grip.

She did not need to be stronger than Jake or faster than him.

She did not need to understand everything about him.

She only needed to see.

Her breathing steadied.

The fear remained, but it no longer controlled her.

A faint smile touched Aria’s lips.

For the first time, she truly understood what her master wanted to teach her.

Seeing an opponent did not mean measuring how powerful they were and being feared by it.

...It meant accepting what stood before you without allowing your mind to distort it...

Jake was terrifying.

That was simply the truth.

And if she wanted to become a true swordswoman, she had to be able to stand before something terrifying without looking away.

At the same time, Jake watched her and felt the change before she even moved.

The air around her seemed to settle.

Her breathing slowed and evened out.

Her posture loosened.

Yet somehow, that relaxation made her feel even more dangerous.

Jake’s eyes narrowed.

’Is this really a Common Class?’

Sure, if this were a serious battle, Jake could have effortlessly killed her if he wanted to.

He certainly wouldn’t stand around and let an enemy charge up a skill.

But even so...

For Aria to exude this much strength and make him feel even slightly on guard proved one thing.

’She’s a genius.’

There was no other way to describe it.

She had only just received a Common Class, yet she had already reached this level of understanding.

That was absurd.

Even Jake had to admit it.

He had originally thought he was simply giving Aria an opportunity to grow.

But perhaps...

He had severely underestimated just how frightening her talent actually was.

And at that moment, Aria opened her eyes.

Jake noticed it immediately.

There was no flare of aura, no sudden killing intent, nothing dramatic enough to mark the change.

Her gaze simply met his, calm and clear, yet somehow sharper than before.

For a brief instant, Jake felt as though she could see straight through him, leaving him completely exposed.

’...What kind of feeling is that?’

Then it passed.

Aria’s fingers tightened around the hilt.

Her thumb pressed against the guard, locking the blade firmly in place, while her stance lowered by the slightest degree.

When she spoke, her voice was soft.

”I’m coming.”

Jake’s mouth curved into a grin, then he laughed.

”Haha! Come at me!”

He had never considered himself a battle junkie.

For him, fighting had always been a means to an end, something he did because he needed to survive or protect what was his.

But now, as he watched Aria settle into that quiet, sharpened readiness, something unexpected stirred in his chest.

He was getting excited.

For the first time, he genuinely wanted to see just how far her sword could reach.

”Show me—”

Aria was already moving before his words finished.

There was no rush of footsteps, no wasted burst of strength.

Her body simply glided forward, light as the wind, and the distance between them vanished in an instant.

”...!”

Jake’s gaze dropped.

She was already beneath him, her stance low, her body coiled tightly against the stone.

Her thumb completed its push against the guard.

ZING—

Steel whispered free as a cold arc of light sliced through the dim air.

The blade emerged from below.

It wasn’t a wild swing, nor a desperate initial strike.

It was a single, clean draw, existing only for the moment required.

”Issen.”

Jake’s body moved before his thoughts could catch up.

Then—

Aria’s draw crashed into the short blade Jake had already raised.

CLANG!!

The two blades collided.

The impact exploded through the cave, sharp enough to bite at the ears and kick dust from the stone.

Sparks burst between them, scattering in a brief, violent shower of gold as a shockwave blasted outward from the point of contact.

The force traveled through both their arms as their blades remained locked.

Jake’s short sword remained steady in his grip... while Aria trembled slightly.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

But Jake’s eyes were filled with amazement and admiration.

Her strike had been so precise that if Jake had been even a breath slower, that spark would have been blood.

Then Jake felt it.

The terrifying part wasn’t the strength behind her attack.

It was how little strength she had needed to use.

She hadn’t tried to overpower him.

She had simply struck at the exact moment and from the exact angle where his defense was weakest.

Almost like she knows where the weak point is...

Realizing this, Jake grinned.

”So this is what Issen is...”
