CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The remaining half of the Red Horde, shattered by the sudden loss of over twenty-five thousand beasts, faltered. For the first time in memory, the relentless tide broke, the surviving monstrosities screeching in terror as they scattered and retreated toward the corrupted wastes.

At the base of the citadel’s massive, ward-etched gates, the sound of slaughter ceased. With a soft click of her mandibles, the Arachne Princess dissolved into a flurry of golden threads, withdrawing into the Crown Core to rest within her court node. Following her lead, her entire white brood and solar warriors shattered like radiant ether, vanishing into thin air.

Caius stood alone before the heavy doors alongside White Bones, casually sheathing his dual short-swords. White-gold lightning flickered one last time across his pauldrons before dissolving back into his skin. He looked up at the frozen, wide-eyed defenders lining the parapets, tilted his head, and called out smoothly, ”Well? Aren’t you going to open the gate for us?”

His voice broke the spell binding the ramparts. Heavy chains rattled, iron deadbolts slid back, and the colossal gates groaned open just wide enough to allow passage.

Caius and White Bones stepped through the threshold into the courtyard. The moment their boots touched the flagstones, a suffocating silence fell over the garrison. The slate-gray Æthrynn warriors stared at Caius in absolute, breathless awe. Their leader, a veteran covered in battle scars and intricate warding tattoos, looked up toward the bruised crimson sky as if offering a silent prayer before dropping to his knees and pressing his forehead against the stone. One by one, every gray-skinned warrior in the courtyard followed suit.

Beside him, White Bones adjusted his pristine ivory sleeves and muttered dryly beneath his cowl, ”My Lord... it appears you have ascended as a god now.”

Caius rubbed the back of his neck, shifting uncomfortably under the weight of hundreds of kneeling worshipers. ”This is awkward.”

Scanning the courtyard, Caius’s gaze landed on a distinct group that remained standing near the inner stairs, sixty-five heavily armored survivors. At their front stood a dark elf whose cold, pragmatic eyes burned with intense martial reverence rather than religious worship.

Caius glanced sideways at his companion. ”White Bones, you have kin here.” Turning back to the dark elf commander, Caius spoke in high classical Nyx’ari. ”Can you understand me?”

Nyzekh straightened his posture. ”Yes,” he replied, his classical accent crisp and flawless.

Caius let out a small breath. ”Please, tell them to rise. I am not a god.”

Nyzekh’s dark elf blood flared as he looked at the young warrior who had just single-handedly devoured an army. A faint, rare smile touched the warden’s lips. ”To them, perhaps. But to me... you looked like a god of the blade descended.”

Beside Caius, White Bones let out a low, raspy chuckle that echoed beneath his holy robes, while Caius pinched the bridge of his nose against a budding headache.

”Can you please help translate then?” Caius asked, motioning toward the kneeling elder. ”I need help on something... I am searching for some people.”

Nyzekh shook his head smoothly. ”You won’t need a translator. They speak a crude dialect of ancient Elvish. Speak plainly, and they will understand you well enough.”

Nodding, Caius stepped forward and addressed the Æthrynn leader directly in measured, simplified Elvish. He offered his assistance in securing the citadel and inquired about the realm, asking if the elder knew of the people and spatial anchors he was searching for.

The gray-skinned veteran lifted his head, his eyes shining with overwhelming gratitude. Rising slowly, the leader gestured deeper into the fortress city, offering to show him their most sacred hall. He turned and led Caius and White Bones through the winding inner thoroughfares toward the heart of the citadel.

There, towering over the surrounding stone structures, stood a colossal, stepped ziggurat carved directly from the living basalt of the valley floor, a monumental pyramid rising tier upon tier in steep geometric precision. Its multi-tiered terraces were constructed from megalithic, polyhedral stone blocks fitted so impossibly tight together without mortar that not even a blade’s edge could slip between the seams.

Intricate bas-reliefs were deeply etched across every wall face: feathered serpent-like monsters, braided geometric glyphs, and historical murals detailing ancient battles against the rot. A massive central staircase climbed straight up the central axis of the pyramid, flanked by heavy stone balustrades carved into the likeness of snarling beast-gods. At the truncated flat summit sat a shadowed, cavernous portal framed by ancient ward-carvings flaring with faint mana.

By then, word of the miraculous victory had already swept through every corridor like wildfire.

As they approached the base of the great pyramid, hundreds of gray-skinned Æthrynn—families, wounded warriors, and elders—lined the terraced stone walkways. They watched in quiet, tearful disbelief, bowing in profound reverence as Caius passed by.

Falling in behind them, Nyzekh, Bruga, and the remaining sixty-five Stormguard survivors formed a silent honor guard, their heavy boots echoing on the ancient stone as they followed the procession up the grand, monolithic steps toward the dark entrance of the temple pyramid.
