Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 87: Chapter 87 The Most Discerning

Qin Jian’s lips curved in a smirk, his gaze holding a hint of amusement as he looked at him, ”I remember the duty of a doctor is to treat patients!”

The implication was that the doctor was meddling too much.

The doctor chuckled, ”Guessed it right!” After saying that, he sneakily glanced at An Hao and whispered to Qin Jian, ”I knew you’re the most cunning one. Have you already started setting your trap without a sound?”

Qin Jian raised an eyebrow and glared at him.

Dr. Xu immediately clamped his mouth shut, ”I understand, I understand! Keep it secret! Keep it secret!”

It wasn’t that he wanted to gossip, but who could blame him when Qin Jian was the man of the moment in the hospital? His every move was legendary, and who wouldn’t be curious? Who wouldn’t want to know a little more?

Upon leaving the medical office, An Hao wouldn’t let Qin Jian carry her no matter what.

Seeing her insistence, Qin Jian also gave up.

As the two passed by the grocery store at the entrance, they simultaneously said, ”Wait!”

”What’s up?” Qin Jian thought she had something to do when she said to wait, so he let her speak first.

”Since we’re visiting your department head’s home, it’s not good to show up empty-handed. How about we buy some gifts before going over?” An Hao suggested.

Qin Jian nodded, as that was what he had in mind.

Unexpectedly, although An Hao was younger than him, she was very thoughtful.

After browsing the grocery store, they emerged with several cans, a few boxes of luncheon meat, and two pounds of apples. In this season, it was not easy to find fruits, so having apples was already quite good.

It cost over ten yuan in total, and Qin Jian was the one who paid for everything.

When they arrived at Department Head Zhang’s house, Qin Jian knocked on the door, and Zhang Lanxiang came out to open it, still wearing her cooking apron around her waist.

Seeing the items in Qin Jian’s hands, she couldn’t help but chide him, ”We lack for nothing at home, what’s with buying all this stuff?”

”It was An Hao’s idea.” Qin Jian’s lips curved slightly.

”This child is too considerate,” Zhang Lanxiang scolded with her words but smiled beamingly on her face, ”Next time just come directly, and don’t you dare bring anything again.”

An Hao smiled and nodded, ”I will remember, sister-in-law. This is my first visit! I didn’t know what you and the department head might like, so we just bought something simple.”

”Like it, we like everything! Come in and have a seat!” Zhang Lanxiang called An Hao and Qin Jian into the house.

Department Head Zhang’s house was quite spacious, with a row of Chinese parasol trees in front which, in the midst of March’s bright spring, had yet to sprout and looked stark.

The sunlight poured in through the window, making the interior appear bright and cheerful.

Department Head Zhang was sitting alone inside, deep in a game of chess. Hearing Qin Jian’s voice, he stood up and beckoned both him and An Hao to come sit.

”You, my boy!” Department Head Zhang pointed at Qin Jian’s nose and shook his head with a laugh, ”You got yourself a partner and didn’t even tell me, making us worry for nothing!”

”Sorry, Chief. I didn’t clarify before, it’s my mistake!” Qin Jian sincerely admitted his error.

If she didn’t know that Qin Jian was putting on an act, she might actually believe that the two of them were a couple.

”No harm done, no harm done! As long as you have a partner, that’s what matters!” Department Head Zhang said, as his gaze began to appraise An Hao. He noticed her absence of evasion and coyness, her clear, calm eyes, and her quiet and refined demeanor, which pleased him greatly, ”You’re An Hao? How old are you?”

”I’m eighteen this year.”

”Heard you’re from the village? Do you farm? Or work?” Department Head Zhang gently inquired, also indirectly vetting An Hao for Qin Jian.

”Neither. I’m still in school, sitting for the college entrance exams this year!” An Hao answered truthfully.

Department Head Zhang was taken aback for a moment, ”So young? You’re still two years away from the legal marriage age!”

Having said that, he gave Qin Jian a meaningful look.
