A Necromancer's Guide to Clearing a Game Like Tower

Chapter 266: Chapter 257 — The Voice Beneath the Palace I

The red light came up through another crack in the field, and Baldwin looked down at it the way a man looks at a debt collector he has been expecting.

**[CorkClimber]:** HE KNOWS WHAT IT IS

**[ShieldMainSiobhan]:** LOOK AT HIS FACE. LOOK AT HIS FACE

**[user88317]:** what does he know??? WHAT DOES HE KNOW

**[GalwayGoblin]:** he’s not even surprised

**[FrontierWife]:** THAT WAS UNDER THE PALACE IN THE VISION

**[CrownLawIE]:** so it’s HIS?? is it his???

**[FloorTheoryIE]:** no. look again. he’s not commanding it. he’s *waiting* for it

**[user88317]:** WAITING FOR WHAT

**[CorkClimber]:** SOMEBODY EXPLAIN

**[MOD]:** Slow mode enabled.

Nobody explained.

The answer was two years old and eleven hundred kilometres away, in a corridor beneath a palace, on a night when Caerleon still had a living king.

---

Before any of it, Baldwin was simply the heir, and he was good at it.

He was not a prince who rode out and came back with stories. He was the one who read what came in, and by the time he was twenty-eight there was almost nothing that reached the capital which had not crossed his desk before it reached his father’s.

He knew the roads. He knew what the harvest was in the eastern valleys and what that meant for a siege in three years. He knew which garrison commanders inflated their numbers and which ones understated them, and he knew this because he had spent nine years learning it while other men his rank spent those years hunting.

And for the last eighteen months, he had been the first person in Caerleon to understand that the north was going wrong.

It did not arrive as a disaster. That was the thing he could never make anyone see. It arrived as paperwork.

A patrol that did not report on schedule, and then reported four days late having lost two men. Then a patrol that did not report at all. A fortified post requesting timber for repairs twice in one season, which meant it had been hit twice in one season. Supply requisitions that crept up by a tenth, then a fifth, then a third. Reports of livestock being driven south early, out of season, by people who did not write down why.

Any one of those was nothing. Baldwin had a room where he kept all of them, in order, going back a year and a half, and the shape they made when you laid them out was not nothing at all.

Raymond’s dispatches were in that room too.

His brother’s reports were the best-written things that came out of the north — clear, honest, no inflation, and utterly relentless about what he needed. Raymond never asked for anything he did not intend to use, and he never once wrote that a position could not be held.

Baldwin respected that enormously. He had said so, out loud, more than once.

He also thought it was going to destroy the kingdom.

Because what his brother’s dispatches described, when Baldwin laid eighteen months of them side by side, was a man holding four hundred miles of frontier by moving faster than the thing pressing against it — and doing it with fewer soldiers every season, longer supply lines every season, and more ground to cover every season.

It worked. That was the problem. It kept working, and every time it worked, the capital found another reason not to decide anything.

---

The meeting where it broke open was not dramatic.

There were maps, and there were the usual military men, and there was Alaric at the head of the table looking older than he had a year ago.

Baldwin laid out his eighteen months.

Then he laid out what he thought had to happen: pull the manpower out of the frontier positions that could not survive a serious invasion, and stop pretending they could. Concentrate that manpower behind the walls that could. Fortify the three routes an army actually had to use. Build a central reserve large enough to relieve any major position within a week. Stop feeding men into places that would fall anyway.

”We are defending everything,” he said, ”which means we are defending nothing. When it comes — and it is coming — we will lose the small places *and* the large ones, because the strength that could have held the large ones will already be spread across the small ones and dead.”

Nobody in the room said he was wrong about the arithmetic.

Alaric did not say he was wrong about the arithmetic either.

”Say the rest of it,” his father said.

”Sire?”

”You have described pulling our soldiers out of eleven positions. Say what happens to the people living behind them.”

Baldwin did not look away. ”They come south.”

”Some of them. The ones who can travel, in the season when travelling is possible, if they believe the warning.” Alaric leaned forward. ”And the rest?”

”The rest are already living somewhere that cannot be defended. That is a fact whether I say it aloud or not.”

”It is a fact.” His father let that sit for a moment. ”And the day I sign an order that treats it as a *plan*, I have stopped being their king and started being an accountant with a crown on. Those villages are Caerleon. Not the parts of Caerleon that are convenient. If I decide in advance which of my people are worth defending, then the kingdom I am preserving is not the one they belong to.”

He was not being sentimental about it, and that was what made it hard. He knew the numbers as well as Baldwin did. He simply refused to arrive at the conclusion before every other road had been walked.

”Then give Raymond enough men to hold what you will not abandon,” Baldwin said.

”I have given him what exists.”

”Then the strategy is not a strategy. It’s a hope.”

There was a silence in the room of exactly the wrong length.

Then one of the military men cleared his throat and read out the dispatch that had come up from the north that morning.

Raymond had held. Another threatened position, one of the eleven on Baldwin’s list, one his own analysis said should have been evacuated in autumn. Raymond had reinforced it with a company he stripped from the eastern supply road, leaving it entirely unguarded, and had broken the attack and held the ground.

The mood in the room lifted about six inches.

Alaric looked down the table at his son with something that was almost gentleness.

”Your brother does not appear to have read your list.”

And Baldwin, who was already the most hated kind of correct, said nothing at all — because everyone in that room heard a victory, and what he heard was a man spending a company he could not replace to hold a position that would still be indefensible next spring, and buying the capital another six months of not deciding.

He said nothing because there was nothing to say that would not sound like resenting his brother.

He did not resent his brother.

He resented that Raymond kept succeeding in ways that made the truth easier to postpone.

---

The report came eleven weeks later.

Baldwin read it at his desk, in the morning, alone, and it was not a massacre and there were no burning towers in it. It was four pages of a specific format he had read a thousand times.

Position lost. Relief column dispatched, arrived late; reasons given, three of them, all of them true and none of them anybody’s fault. Garrison strength before. Garrison strength recovered. The difference, which was a number.

Then civilians: known dead, known evacuated, unaccounted. The unaccounted column was longer than the other two together, because it always was, and because *unaccounted* was the word Caerleon’s clerks used for people nobody was ever going to look for.

Then equipment abandoned. Then the current position of survivors, moving south, requiring food.

It was on his list. It had been on his list for a year and a half, in a room down the corridor, third box, near the front.

He read all four pages. He read them a second time, slower, all the way to the equipment inventory, which did not matter and which he read anyway.

His hand had closed on the edge of the desk somewhere in the second page and he did not notice until his fingers began to ache.

He did not put the report down for a long time.

---

He went to his father that evening, and what happened between them took an hour and can be said in six lines.

Baldwin wanted Alaric to say it. Not to apologise — to *say* it, plainly, that the strategy had now cost them a position and the people behind it, and that it would cost more.

Alaric said that mistakes had been made and would be examined, and that he had never claimed the current course was without cost.

Baldwin said cost was a word people used when they had decided not to count.

Alaric said that his son had begun speaking about his own countrymen the way a quartermaster speaks about grain — what can be preserved, what can be spent — and that he had noticed it happening over months and had hoped it would stop.

Baldwin said that someone in this palace had to be willing to do the arithmetic, and that if it disgusted his father, his father should be aware that the alternative was doing no arithmetic at all and calling it mercy.

Alaric said that he remained king, and that the frontier would be held as it had been held.

And Baldwin said, ”Yes, sire,” and bowed, and left.

That was the part that would not leave him afterward.

Not the argument, which he had expected to lose. Not his father’s face, which had been tired rather than angry.

The bow.

He had stood in front of the man he was certain was leading the kingdom into a catastrophe, he had said everything he had, he had been refused — and then his body had performed the small precise courtesy it had been trained to perform since he was six, and his mouth had said *yes, sire*, and he had walked out and gone to bed.

And tomorrow there would be another report, and it would come to his desk first, and he would read it, and it would still not be his decision.

---

He was still awake at the third hour when he noticed the light.

It was in the floor.

Not on it. In it — a thin red line following a seam in the old stone at the foot of the far wall, faint enough that he thought at first it was a reflection from the brazier, until he covered the brazier with his cloak and the line stayed exactly where it was.

Baldwin was many things. Hypnotised was not one of them.

He took his sword off the wall, put on enough clothing to be seen in, and went to find out what was wrong with his palace — because a red light coming up through the stone of the royal residence was, in his ordering of the world, an attack of some kind until proven otherwise.

The line ran out of his chamber and along the corridor. It ran down the west stair, which was the old stair, then down again past the level where the wine was kept and the level below that, into the parts of the foundation that predated the palace and had simply been built over.

The deeper he went, the quieter it got.

That was the thing he noticed and disliked. A palace at night is not silent. There are guards on the hours, and kitchen fires being banked, and the enormous slow noises a large stone building makes as it cools.

By the fourth level down there was nothing at all, and Baldwin’s own footsteps sounded wrong, and he had stopped hearing the building above him.

He kept going, and the argument kept going with him.

*Yes, sire.*

The unaccounted column, longer than the other two together.

*Your brother does not appear to have read your list.*

The red light was strong enough now that he did not need the lamp, and he had not lit the lamp, and he could not remember deciding not to.

Then something spoke to him out of the dark ahead.

And, it did not sound like an attack.
