SSS Rank Awakening: The World Beyond Redemption

The press room was already full when the lights came up, but it was not the ordinary fullness of a scheduled briefing. It was the fullness of history waiting to be recorded. Rows of reporters sat packed shoulder to shoulder, tablets hovering in mid-air, recorder crystals pulsing a steady blue, the low murmur of last-minute strategy hanging over the room like smoke that refused to clear. Outside the tall windows of the Solaria Guild Hall, the skyline burned gold under an artificial dusk — towers of mana-glass catching the light and throwing it back in long, trembling reflections, as if the entire city itself were holding its breath along with the room. Every seat faced the raised platform and the single microphone that waited beneath a soft white beam, small and unremarkable, utterly unworthy of what it was about to broadcast to every corner of Solaria.

This was not merely the biggest story of the season. It was the story of a generation. Eclipse guild had done what forty years of the strongest parties in the Second Realm had failed to do — they had cleared Dragon’s Grave, an S-rank dungeon so notorious that guild masters spoke its name the way sailors once spoke of drowned cities. Three hundred and eleven attempts. Three hundred and eleven failures, some of them total wipes, entire elite parties reduced to obituary lists nailed to guild hall doors. And at the black, ash-choked heart of that dungeon had coiled the Black Dragon — a being old enough to remember when the Second Realm had no cities at all, powerful enough that its name alone had been enough to keep S-rank guilds from even attempting the depths for over a decade.

Eclipse had killed it. And not a single member of their party had died doing it.

In a world where even champion-tier parties expected to bury someone after an S-rank clear, that single fact alone was enough to make an entire press room forget how to sit still.

A door at the side of the platform opened, and the room did not so much quiet as it collapsed into silence, all at once, like a held breath finally released the wrong way.

Kaia Blackthorn walked in without hurry.

She wore the formal black of Eclipse’s leadership uniform, tailored close, the silver crest of the guild burning faintly at her collar with its own inner light. Her hair was tied back with the same exact, merciless precision she gave to everything that mattered — and to a woman like Kaia, everything mattered. She was the eldest daughter of House Blackthorn, one of the seven Sovereign families of the kingdom, co-leader of a guild that had just rewritten the record books, and — depending on which gossip feed one trusted least — the single most watched young woman in the Solaria kingdom. Even among a press corps hardened by a thousand jaded briefings, there was a short, collective intake of breath as she crossed the stage. It was not merely her beauty, though that alone could have stopped traffic in three kingdoms. It was the weight she carried into a room. Mana rolled off her in a thin, disciplined current, barely perceptible, like standing near a sheathed blade and feeling the cold of the metal anyway.

She stepped up to the microphone, tapped it twice, waited for the soft confirmation chime, and let her eyes pass once, slowly, across the entire room — a silent warning disguised as a formality.

”We’ll answer questions related to Dragon’s Grave.” Her voice was even, flat, carved from something colder than politeness. ”Nothing outside that scope.”

A heavy-set man in the front row shot to his feet before the words had finished landing. ”Is it true your team killed the Black Dragon without losing a single member?”

Kaia’s gaze swept the room once more. ”Count our roster yourselves if you’d like. We’re all still standing.”

The man smiled, trying — and failing — for lightness. ”What I meant was the overall cost. How badly did Eclipse come out of it?”

”Minor injuries.” A pause, precise as a blade stroke. ”Nothing that will slow our next schedule.”

A woman with short black hair rose next, pen already moving before Kaia had finished speaking. ”How long did the clear take?”

”A little over two months.” Something flickered behind Kaia’s eyes for half a heartbeat — the memory of sixty-one days without full sleep, of watching her vice-captain nearly burn out his mana core holding the boss’s attention, of the moment the dragon’s roar had cracked three support pillars and half the room had genuinely believed they were about to die together in the dark. None of it touched her voice.

”And the corpse?” the same reporter pressed. ”There are rumors Lionheart has already opened talks to buy the remains.”

The room leaned in as one organism.

Kaia let the silence stretch — not out of hesitation, but because she wanted every recorder in the building to catch exactly how absolute her answer was. ”We’re keeping the materials. Every scale, every claw, every drop of ichor. They’ll be used to arm and armor this guild, not sold to line someone else’s treasury.”

A murmur went through the room like wind through dry grass. Lionheart was the single largest guild south of the capital. To refuse them so openly, so publicly, was not merely a business decision — it was a declaration.

More questions followed in a rapid, hungry volley — loot distribution, which wing of the dungeon had broken the most bodies, whether Eclipse intended to publish a full after-action report for the Guild Registry. Kaia answered each one in short, exact sentences, never once expanding past what was asked, never once allowing warmth to creep into her tone. The role of public face had fallen onto her shoulders years ago, back when she was barely seventeen and already burying classmates, and she performed it now the way she performed everything: with total control and not one wasted motion.

Then the golden-haired reporter rose.

She was the kind who usually chased scandal rather than dungeon clears — perfume a little too strong, smile a little too rehearsed, the sort of journalist who had built a career out of catching royalty mid-stumble. Her smile was already fixed in place before she’d even finished standing.

”Miss Blackthorn — is it true you and Eros Strombane are dating?”

Kaia did not look at her. She simply turned toward the next raised hand, as smoothly and completely as if the question had dissolved in the air before it ever reached her ears. A ripple of uncomfortable laughter moved through the back rows. The golden-haired reporter remained standing, color rising hot in her cheeks, humiliation and stubbornness warring visibly across her face.

The remaining dungeon questions came and went quickly after that, each one closed the same clean way — factual, clipped, final. Kaia was already half-turned toward the side door, the conference all but over in her mind, when the golden-haired reporter spoke again — louder this time, and with the reckless edge of someone who had decided that if she couldn’t win with charm, she’d win with a blade instead.

”Miss Kaia — the nation wants to know. Your brother, Rael Blackthorn, was confirmed classless and has been missing for over a month. What do you have to say about him?”

The temperature in the room did not merely drop. It fell, all at once, like a stone dropped down a well with no bottom. Every recorder kept running, their little blue lights the only thing in the room still moving. No one dared breathe past that first frozen inhale. Even the reporters who had spent years chasing the worst of the noble houses understood, in that instant, that they had just watched someone step onto ground that should never, ever have been touched in public.

Kaia turned back to the microphone. Slowly. Completely.

She did not raise her voice.

She did not need to.

The mana that had been coiled so tightly beneath her skin for the entire conference unspooled all at once — not an explosion, nothing so crude, but a vast, silent pressure that rolled outward from the stage like the tide going out before a wave no one had been warned about. The temperature of the room dropped hard enough that breath began fogging in front of startled faces. Recorder crystals flickered and dimmed, their delicate enchantments straining against a will that had not even been aimed at them. Somewhere near the back, a full pitcher of water sitting untouched on a press table sheeted over with a thin, silent skin of frost.

Kaia simply looked at the reporter.

That was all. She did not move. She did not speak. She only looked, with the full, unblinking weight of someone who had personally ended the life of a being old enough to remember when dragons still ruled uncontested. The golden-haired reporter’s rehearsed smile did not so much fade as shatter, piece by piece, under a gaze that made a decade-old S-rank dragon’s death feel like a minor Tuesday afternoon. Her legs began to shake, visibly, audibly, her heels drumming a frantic, involuntary rhythm against the floor.

Security was already moving before Kaia’s stare reached its second full second — two guild-hall officers half-running down the aisle, faces pale, clearly more afraid of what might happen if they were too slow than of the reporter herself. They took her by the arms and half-carried, half-dragged her from the room while she remained frozen in place, eyes locked forward, unable even to look away.

No one protested. No one so much as whispered. Three hundred hardened journalists sat in absolute, obedient silence, and in that silence the room finally understood — not as a rumor, not as a headline, but as a bone-deep, physical fact — exactly what kind of woman had just walked off Dragon’s Grave without losing a single soldier.

Kaia leaned toward the microphone one final time. Her voice, when it came, had returned to its earlier, flat calm, as though the last ten seconds had never happened at all.

”This conference is over.”

She turned and left the stage without a backward glance.

Backstage, the corridor was quieter, lit by the low blue hum of maintenance strips embedded in the stone. Eros Strombane was already waiting against the wall, hands loose in his pockets, wearing the same easy, insufferable posture he always wore whenever he wanted to be the first thing someone saw. Co-leader of Eclipse. Son of Duke Strombane. And, at this precise moment, the very last person on Titan that Kaia wanted to look at.

”Well,” he said, pushing off the wall as she passed, ”the great Kaia Blackthorn just froze half a press corps solid over one little question. Your brother’s situation really does get under that ice-cold skin of yours, doesn’t it?”

She kept walking. He fell into step beside her without being asked, the way he always did, like a shadow that had never once considered whether it was wanted.

”My sister was in his year, you know,” he went on, conversational, almost fond. ”I keep hoping his incompetence didn’t rub off on her.” He drew a slim holographic phone from his pocket and flicked it open with a practiced motion. A shimmering, waist-high projection of a young woman with the same sharp Strombane features bloomed above his palm. He held it up like a trophy. ”Look at her. One of the fastest first-realm clears on record. Made it look easy.” He leaned in and pressed a light, reverent kiss against the glowing surface of the image, eyes half-closing in a way that made even the hallway lighting seem to recoil.

Kaia stopped walking.

She turned, closed one hand around the projection with a grip that could have crushed diamond, and crushed it — not the delicate light of the hologram alone, but the phone itself, mana flaring white-hot for a fraction of a second as metal and enchanted glass folded inward like paper. The light died with a sharp, final crackle.

”Shut up,” she said, ”you sister-obsessed freak.”

Eros pouted, an expression that on anyone else might have looked almost boyish. On him, it never quite reached his eyes — eyes that watched her the way a collector watches something rare and violent he hasn’t yet decided whether to cage or set loose.

”So protective,” he said softly. ”You really do love that brother of yours. It’s almost sweet. You’re hurting my feelings, you know.”

She stepped in close — closer than she’d stood to anyone all day — and caught his jaw in one hand. The thin current of mana she’d kept leashed through the entire conference broke free again, sharper now, colder, close enough to him that frost began crawling along the collar of his uniform in delicate, spreading branches. The corridor’s temperature plummeted a second time in the space of ten minutes.

”Never,” she said, voice dropping into something far colder than anything the press room had heard, ”say that word near me again.”

She held his gaze, unblinking, mana coiling visibly around her knuckles now, bright and dangerous. ”I hate that bastard.”

The words did not sound like grief wearing anger’s mask. They sounded absolute. Final. A verdict handed down and sealed.

She released his jaw and turned away, already walking again before he’d fully recovered his footing.

”You should be glad he came out classless,” she added, not bothering to look back, her voice already flattening back into its practiced, public calm. ”Otherwise that bastard would have taken that record too.”

She kept walking, boots striking the stone in the same precise, unhurried rhythm she’d used to cross the stage. Eros remained where he was, one hand absently touching the frost-rimed collar of his uniform, watching her disappear around the corner.

A slow smile spread across his face — not the easy, public one he wore for cameras and courtiers, but the other one. The private one. The one that only ever surfaced when something had genuinely, dangerously interested him.

The sheer, bottomless hate Kaia Blackthorn carried for her own brother was, in its own twisted way, magnificent.

And Eros Strombane had always had a weakness for magnificent things.
