Sword of Dawnbreaker

Chapter 1215: Chapter 1214: The God’s Unsolved Case

The answer from the leader of the Dragonkin left Modir stunned on the spot. This old mage always considered himself steadfast and calm, rarely surprised by any situation. However, at this moment, he realized that his calm demeanor was simply because he had never faced anything truly bizarre—a god who had disappeared for over 1.8 million years now ”clunked” down right in front of him, and even the steadiest mind would be stirred at this time.

”You... tell me more,” Modir couldn’t help but lean forward, his face full of astonished curiosity, ”A missing Ancient Deity? Are there even cases of gods ’disappearing’?”

”Of course, gods can even be killed, can be banished, will flee, will hide, and in specific cases, can even commit suicide—divine and human nature are two sides of the same coin,” Heragor said solemnly but before continuing to answer Modir’s questions, he first checked the old mage’s condition, ”Discussing deities is a dangerous thing. I must first confirm your situation, Master Modir, you sure you faced that... God? And heard His voice?”

”I’m sure, one hundred percent sure—or why would I joke about it?”

”Apologies, it’s just that this matter is too peculiar; I couldn’t help but confirm a few more times,” Heragor nodded, ”You didn’t feel any spiritual contamination when you heard His voice, or saw His form? Including after waking up, you didn’t hear any persistent murmurs or other peculiar sounds in your mind?”

”No, that’s also what puzzles me—I know what spiritual contamination is. In some ancient ruins and relics, I have come across relics with spiritual contamination. Those contaminations produced by evil spirits and Wronged Souls can last a long time, but after witnessing that ’lady’s’ form, I haven’t suffered any lasting damage... by the way, although that ’lady’ didn’t cause contamination, the terrifying being that ran out from the ruins of the city gave me an extremely dangerous feeling. I am sure if I had looked at Him even for an extra second, it would have been difficult to retreat unscathed.”

”You mentioned that there was a starry pattern on that ’lady’s’ throne, but you can’t remember the specific content at all?” Heragor continued to ask, ”And you tried to jot down the dream described by that ’lady,’ only to find that the corresponding notes turned into unreadable scribbles after waking up?”

Modir nodded, ”Yes, it’s as though some force is preventing this knowledge from entering the real world. Whether through my memory or through the notes I wrote; all traces have been erased.”

Heragor frowned, muttering under his breath, puzzled: ”... It’s a typical divine ’miracle,’ yet without the corresponding divine contamination... What exactly happened to Him? And there’s that starry sky; the stars are not His domain to begin with...”

”So which deity are you talking about?” Modir finally couldn’t resist asking, ”I’ve already...”

”Goddess of Shadows, Lady Night, the Sovereign and protector of shadows and the night sky—His mythological traits are the massive form, a long gown like the night sky that can cover the earth, the shadows and lights that waft by His side, and the Black and White Scepter that separates the border of light and shadow,” Heragor no longer concealed, looking into Modir’s eyes as he spoke, ”In today’s era, except for a few ancient Dragonkin and... ancient beings, no mortal knows the precise description of these mythological traits anymore.”

Modir, sitting at the table, opened his mouth, taking a few seconds before saying, ”Oh gee... So this deity has already disappeared...”

”Yes, disappeared, but few mortal races in the world know this,” Heragor spoke slowly, ”The path of shadow manipulators has always been scarce, and mortals who offer faith to it are even fewer. Due to the almost complete lack of response from the Divine Arts domain and clear divine guidance, Shadow belief has shown to be thin, loose, and intermittent in every cycle of civilization. The world considers the Goddess of Shadows or Lady Night as a deity not concerned with the mortal realm. Some even question whether this deity is real, but only the most ancient beings know that the Goddess of Shadows exists; it’s just that... She disappeared over 1.8 million years ago, and since Her disappearance, the world strangely has not seen any new shadow deities.

The voice of this Ancient Titans who has experienced countless civilization cycles was low. He himself is a ’ancient being’ knowing those secrets: in his youth, in the era before the Voyager’s arrival, when dragons were just one of the many supernatural races on this planet, and other continents had independent realms with many intelligent beings and corresponding deities, he knew of that Goddess of Shadows, then one of the main deities on Loren Continent, worshipped by several dark races, a Sovereign of the night sky, with mythological traits as described by Modir.

And after the Voyager’s arrival, Dragonkin chose to close themselves off, and the other Goddesses of the Night outside of Talronde, driven to madness, were subjected to a great cleansing; almost all gods were utterly destroyed by the Expedition Fleet of the Voyager, save for that Goddess of Shadows... who seemed to have miraculously evaded the Voyager’s hunt.

This matter is known by only a very few people on the entire planet—evidently not including Modir.

So the scenery described by this Great Adventurer could not possibly be something he fabricated.

”... Looks like I’m in big trouble,” Modir said with the experience to recognize an increasingly serious expression growing on the face of the Dragonkin leader before him, ”Yes, in big trouble again.”

Heragor looked seriously at the Great Adventurer before him: ”Have you ever come into contact with strange relics from the Shadow Realm, or touched something similar to divine relics?”

”I don’t remember,” Modir shook his head honestly, ”I don’t even recall ever going to weird places like the shadow realm, not to mention encountering divine relics related to it... But this memory of mine, you know it, who can tell?”

”... That indeed is a problem.” Heragor withdrew his gaze, speaking with a trace of helplessness. Modir, meanwhile, recalled the details of his memory, asking, ”Then about that twisted thing that appeared from the city ruins... do you know anything?”

Heragor, with a serious expression, pondered, seemingly traversing his nearly two million years of memories, but ultimately he regretfully shook his head, ”I have neither heard of nor seen anything similar... It surely hasn’t surfaced in the real world, but there’s one thing I can be certain of... if the lady you saw was the Lady Night who disappeared over 1.8 million years ago, then what opposed her could only be another deity or an entity equal to a deity.”

Modir held his head, mumbling as if starting to get a headache: ”... If that’s the case, then it truly is the ugliest god I’ve ever heard of. Then again, how did I suddenly come into contact with these beings?”

”I don’t know the reason, but often when it comes to the realm of the gods, neither mortals nor gods have the power to decide their own fate. It may be just a coincidence, or it may stem from an accident years ago,” Heragor raised his head, his attitude extremely solemn and earnest, ”Whatever the reason, fate has already entwined with you, Master Modir—in the future, please be extremely cautious. After you leave here, unless necessary, avoid discussing your dreams with ordinary people, and it’s best not to bring up any words related to Lady Night or that twisted chaotic entity, to prevent further connection through words and cognition with those two high existences whose whereabouts are unknown.

”Additionally, if you encounter any similar strange experiences in the future, please come to discuss with me first so I can check the state of your soul—at least when it comes to matters involving the gods, I know a bit more than the average person.”

”I understand, and sincerely thank you for your assistance, Lord Heragor.” Modir nodded in gratitude, knowing well that a gesture from a leader of the Ancient Titans like Heragor to personally help a mysterious person of another race is rare indeed. Perhaps this dragon chief has his own plans, but regardless of the ancient intelligence he shared or the assistance he offered, both were indeed substantial.

Heragor nodded slightly and didn’t forget the original reason for summoning Modir here: ”By the way, Master Modir, the real reason I’ve called you here today is for another matter.”

”Ah yes, I almost forgot,” Modir patted his head, ”Why did you call me over?”

”... In the near future, please remain at the Adventurer Camp, as a guest from afar wishes to meet you,” Heragor chose his words carefully and spoke unhurriedly, ”She has already departed from the Loren Continent and should be arriving soon.”

”A guest from afar? Specifically to meet me?” Modir was taken aback. He couldn’t fathom who in this world would go to such great lengths to cross the ocean to see an old man with poor memory—after all, he had no relatives in this world, ”Who? I don’t recall owing any debt that could drive someone to pursue me across the seas...”

”It is one of your descendants,” Heragor could not help but interrupt the old mage’s scattered thoughts, ”We have... ’found’ one of your descendants on the Loren Continent.”

As he spoke, he closely watched Modir’s expression, sensing the magic fluctuations emanating from him, observing all the reactions this Great Adventurer had upon hearing the news. Modir, on the other hand, was in a long state of astonishment for several seconds after Heragor finished speaking—until the dragon chief couldn’t help but cough lightly twice, prompting him to abruptly snap back, exclaiming, ”What?”

”It’s one of your descendants...”

”Oh, I hear you clearly, I hear you clearly, my descendants, I just didn’t react for a moment,” Modir quickly gestured while responding before Heragor could finish, ”But... are you serious? Not joking? My descendants?! Where did you find them? Descendants... I didn’t even know I had any descendants...”

His reaction was anticipated by Heragor, who merely waited patiently for the old mage’s emotions to gradually settle before speaking in a low voice, ”We used some rather special channels, and in a way... your descendants were not too difficult to find, it’s just that the circumstances were rather special, and I can’t explain it to you in detail right now.”

”All right, all right, there’s nothing about me that isn’t special...” Modir commented while unable to resist conjuring a bright arcane sphere in his hand, rotating the dangerous high-energy entity between his fingers, seemingly incapable of calming down otherwise, ”Descendants, ha, you’ve found my descendants... wait, what’s my descendant’s last name? What do they do?”

He looked up, staring at Heragor, but the other could only spread his hands helplessly: ”I’m sorry, some circumstances...”

”Oh, alright, I won’t ask anymore,” Seeing Heragor’s response, Modir seemed to understand something, although he wasn’t sure if he actually did, ”It seems the situation really is quite special, isn’t it? Well, I guess I’ll just wait... By the way, is there anything I need to prepare? Such as a gift for the meeting?”

”...It’s your descendant, if preparations are needed, it should be from them,” Heragor replied helplessly, ”All you need to do is wait.”

”That makes sense...”

Faced with such sudden information, the Great Adventurer was indeed at a loss for a while. Subsequently, after querying Heragor about many matters for about half an hour, he finally left the room with a peculiar expression.

The sitting room suddenly quieted down, leaving only Heragor sitting quietly behind the table, the dragon chieftain gazing in the direction where the old mage had departed. After a long time, he lightly tapped a spot on the table. Under the drive of ancient magical devices, a wall on one side of the room began to brighten, revealing the figure of the black dragon Andar in the middle of the display.

”The direct mention of the ’descendant’ has clearly left this Great Adventurer a bit at a loss,” Heragor commented with a furrowed brow, ”Is this really appropriate to do?”

”This was at Lady Victoria’s request and received Gawain Cecil’s approval,” Andar’s voice was deep, ”Ultimately, they must meet, and we can observe if there are any new changes in Modir during this interaction, which would aid further understanding of his ’condition.’ As for the latent risk of his consciousness interruption and reset... haven’t we tested it before? As long as we don’t mention the ’Wilder’ surname directly to him, there shouldn’t be any issue, even if he hears ’Wilder.’ Just make sure not to tell him that this surname is his.”

”... Similar to a reaction as if undead...” Heragor remarked softly, shaking his head before shifting the topic, ”What do you make of the ’experience’ Modir mentioned?”

”The lady with the black and white scepter should undoubtedly be the Goddess of Shadows who escaped from the Voyager’s grasp one hundred and eighty million years ago. Both her mythological features and her bizarre present circumstances can be considered evidence—it’s truly unexpected that a case which has been unsolved for nearly two million years would suddenly present clues today, and even point to the dreams of a mortal. The unpredictability of fate...”

”Perhaps Modir’s current strange state is indeed due to the influence of the ancient god,” Heragor nodded gently, ”There are too many mysteries behind this affair. The current whereabouts, state, and purpose of this ancient god remain unknown... Perhaps we should fulfill our obligation as a member nation and submit a report in the next internal meeting of the theocracy Authority Council.”

”That is certain,” Andar replied, his expression taking on a trace of solemnity, ”In fact, beyond the clues concerning ’Lady Night,’ I am currently more concerned about the other ’suspected deity’ Modir mentioned... that unnameable monstrosity.”
