Sword of Dawnbreaker

Chapter 370 - 369: Cecil Clan’s Preparations

Despite the somewhat serious atmosphere after Gawain spoke, Byron remained expressionless and calmly answered the question: ”After the rounds of expansion in winter and spring, the number of combat personnel in the Cecil Combat Corps has reached five thousand, one thousand of whom have undergone artillery training. However, although we have five thousand soldiers, more than three thousand of them are still complete rookies—they have only undergone basic drills, know how to use heat-ray guns, grenades, and landmines, but have zero combat experience.”

Gawain nodded slightly. This result was roughly within his expectations, and he was quite satisfied with it.

The Cecil has now expanded again, especially after the Kant Region was officially integrated into the territory. The population within the territory has exceeded seventy thousand—thirty thousand reside in the Cecil Main City, while the rest are spread across surrounding towns and the vast Kant Region. Considering the development model of a Magic-Industrial Society, he is continuously concentrating more population into the main city and is consistently recruiting refugees.

With this population base, the previously exaggerated military-to-civilian ratio of almost eight civilian to one soldier in the early developing new regions has finally eased. Moreover, due to the existence of the construction soldier system and the support of territorial productivity, the current scale of the Cecil Combat Corps is still relatively reasonable and balanced for the territory.

It is an unchangeable fact that a large portion of the soldiers in this corps are rookies.

Apart from real combat tests and time accumulation, rookies in the army cannot simply turn into veterans out of thin air. Although the combat corps has always maintained a tradition of high-intensity, intensive training, regularly scouring the surrounding areas of the territory for bandits and exterminating monsters to gain ”blood-stained experience,” and having veterans lead rookie squads as seed instructors, the training efficiency is much higher than that of the traditional private soldiers of this era. Still, no matter how high the efficiency, it’s impossible to drill these rookie eggs effectively within just over two months.

Yet Gawain knows that, even with a high proportion of rookies, the soldiers of the combat corps still have a significant advantage compared to the traditional private soldiers of this era—a significant enough advantage to offset many of the issues caused by high rookie proportions—the special nature of magic infantry.

The traditional soldiers of this era still mainly rely on cold weapons for combat. Magic power often serves as embellishments used by a few combat Mages in the army to enhance the battlefield and counter their opponents. Training soldiers who use cold weapons for combat is particularly long and challenging, with complex fighting, offensive, and defensive skills requiring years of honing. The courage needed for face-to-face close-range killing is not something that can be cultivated overnight. But what about magic soldiers?

They only need a month of practice to go from handling a heat-ray gun to roughly hitting a person’s torso from dozens of meters away. During this time, they can also undergo disciplined, systematic indoctrination and learn the conduct of soldiers. As for cold weapon combat...

The performance of a Melting Sword is sufficient to make up for many shortcomings.

Moreover, for the Cecil Combat Corps, close combat with cold weapons is not a primary focus: the Melting Sword is merely a secondary weapon.

As one of the main commanders and early builders of the combat corps, Byron is naturally aware of the situation of his soldiers, so after reporting the proportion of rookies, he immediately added: ”A magic infantryman who has gone through two months of training can kill several traditional soldiers, who have received years of training and even experienced several battles, from dozens of meters away. So even our new recruits have formidable combat power—provided they have enough shooting space.”

”In comparison, artillery training is more complex and slower,” he then added, ”team coordination, quick reference of firing tables, memorizing various battle commands, and handling and maintaining rail accelerators are all much more difficult than heat-ray guns.”

”That’s normal; the formation speed of advanced troop types has always been like this,” Gawain nodded, ”As long as they can quickly master those small cannons, it’s fine.”

”You can rest assured about that,” Byron stated confidently, ”The miniaturized ’Persuader’ railgun can be controlled by two people, the firing table is simple, and the sights are also more straightforward. They’ve already been trained to a good standard.”

After Byron finished his report, Sir Philip then spoke: ”I am integrating and reassembling the old corps from the Kant Region. After the Kant Knights swore allegiance, Knight Wald Peric led the pioneering knights, along with their retainers and militia, into the Cecil. This group numbers around three thousand. They are all old-style aristocratic private soldiers, with poor combat effectiveness and discipline, entirely unable to compare with our combat troops. But fortunately, there are twelve fully-trained knights among them. With the cooperation of these Kant Knights, the integration and reorganization of the old corps have gone smoothly.”

”Intensify training, especially the transformation of their ideology must be in place,” Gawain, who was well aware of the situation of aristocratic private soldiers of this era, especially emphasized the ideological transformation of these old troops. Fortunately, the previous Kant territory was considered a relatively enlightened and well-ordered territory, and the local old corps had not degenerated to an irredeemable extent, leading him to be somewhat optimistic, ”After training, this corps will form the Second Legion, still under the command of Knight Wald Peric. I have had contact and understanding with Knight Wald Peric, and as long as his ideological transformation is complete, he will be a reliable and loyal person.”

”The first batch of trainees and the initial training plan for the Steel Cavalry are in place, but training has just begun, so there isn’t much to report yet,” the third to speak was Soldrin, ”I have privately thought about some equipment design plans based on my own combat experience and the characteristics of ’Magic Weapons’ and plan to discuss it with Nicholas Egg soon.”

After all these reports concluded, Gawain nodded in satisfaction, and Aunt Heidi, who had long wanted to speak, could no longer hold back and finally voiced her concern: ”Ancestor, are we going to... prepare for war?”

”Yes, preparation, but for now, it’s just preparation,” Gawain looked into Aunt Heidi’s eyes. ”To be frank, I don’t want to involve our developing territory in the flames of war right now, but we must be ready for changes in the situation.”

”Changes in the situation...” Aunt Heidi thought for a moment and understood what Gawain meant. ”Are you saying that the peace negotiation between Typhon and Anzu might actually lead to major trouble? That it might actually lead to war?”

”I just have a bad feeling about it,” Gawain confirmed Aunt Heidi’s statement indirectly. ”I would like to believe that the leaders of both countries are aware of the common threat that comes from the Wasteland and understand the irrationality of going to war at this time, but I have serious doubts about whether things will develop so smoothly... The Eternal Sleepers, the Oblivion Association, the war-loving aristocrats of both countries, and the rumored ’madness’ of the Typhon Emperor—all these factors threaten this negotiation. If any problem arises during the talks, it will be too late to prepare after the war breaks out.”

”I understand,” Aunt Heidi nodded slowly. ”The Administrative Office will also start taking action—actually, the accumulation of resources has never stopped since the trade routes were opened, but now I will increase the intensity of resource accumulation according to wartime standards.”

Cecil is a place that seems peaceful and prosperous, but in fact, due to Gawain’s sense of crisis, this land has been prepared for war from the very beginning—whether the enemies are aberrations or humans. Over the past year, Gawain has opened trade routes in three directions, and now various ores from the western Leslie territory, herbal materials and wheat from the northern Kant Region, and food, fur, and textile materials from the eastern Gran Territory are being sent to the warehouses continuously every day.

Outsiders only know that the Cecil Clan has made incredible wealth in the fields of alchemical potions and magic-conducting machinery, but they might not imagine that more than half of this wealth is being spent at an equally astonishing speed, turning into war preparation materials in Gawain’s warehouses...

”Besides storing up supplies, we must also consider issues like territory security, public opinion, logistics, and material distribution once war breaks out,” Gawain said, looking not only at Aunt Heidi but at everyone present. ”Cecil has prosperity and order far beyond what the outside world sees. We must prove that even in the event of war, this level of prosperity and order is unmatched anywhere else.”

After completing various preparatory arrangements for war, Gawain announced the end of this meeting, but the atmosphere at the scene remained somewhat tense and serious.

Seeing this, he laughed, ”Of course, we’re merely preparing for a rainy day here. This negotiation might end smoothly, and perhaps nothing will happen, so don’t be overly nervous—life goes on.”

Amber couldn’t help but mutter when she heard this, ”Why do I feel even more anxious when you say that...”

Gawain immediately glared at her, ”What do you mean by that?”

Amber mumbled, ”You said last time that it would be great if aberrations didn’t attack, yet over three thousand monsters besieged us before winter ended...”

Gawain slapped the half-elf on the head, ”So now you take over being stubborn since Rebecca’s not here?!”

”Ouch—painful!”

Thanks to Amber’s contribution and spirit of sacrifice, the atmosphere at the scene became much less tense and serious after Gawain’s slap...

After settling Amber down, Gawain recalled something and looked at Byron, ”Speaking of which, winter is over. It seems the exploration of the remaining parts of the defied Fortress can be restarted.”

After Kamel joined the Cecil, many secrets of the mountain ruins were unraveled, and its name was officially changed to its Empire-period name, ’defied Fortress.’ Currently, one-third of the Fortress is already in use, having been transformed into a munitions plant, manufacturing facility for advanced equipment, and war supply warehouse after modern Magic Web modifications connected it to energy sources. However, a large portion of it still remains hidden in the unknown depths of darkness.

Though Kamel was once a senior technical officer in the defied Fortress, the enormous scale of the ancient fortress and the multitude of secrets buried within made it so that only the Gondor Royalty of the past knew all its secrets. Kamel helped Gawain map the structure of the lower floors and the defied Fortress area, but as for the southern and eastern parts of the fortress, they remain a mystery.

After the onset of winter, Gawain paused the exploration of the unknown areas of the defied Fortress and temporarily blocked the corridors leading to its southern and eastern sections. But now that winter has ended and the weather is warming, he thinks it’s time to restart this project.
