Gardener of Eden

Chapter 201: Chapter 201: Traitor Within

Deep within the secluded, obsidian-paved sanctum of the Imperial Palace, the night air was broken only by the rhythmic, golden pulse of royal defensive wards.

Emperor Aurelius von Aetheris sat at his private obsidian desk, his towering frame clad in simple, unadorned training robes. Before him floated a single, microscopic specks of crimson light—a high-level, soul-bound communication rune that could only be activated by an operative of the Imperial Shadow Core, embedded decades deep within the continent’s most lethal dark networks.

With a flick of the Emperor’s finger, the crimson speck expanded into a dense cascade of shifting, runic cipher code.

[ENCRYPTED TRANSMISSION — CLASSIFICATION: DEEP COVER]

Source: Operative Black Viper (Embedded: Order Exec-9 Inner Circle)

Target Recipient: Emperor Aurelius Personal Sight

Intercepted Intelligence: Executive 9 (Adam) and Executive 2 (Roxie) have mobilized 36 S-Rank purist killers and compromised Capital Guard sector 4.

Objective: Total spatial isolation and execution of Rowan Vance during Monday’s flagship store reopening in Sol Aethel City.

The Emperor’s golden eyes narrowed into thin, lethal slits as the message dissolved into harmless embers. An oppressive, suffocating pressure radiated off his shoulders, causing the heavy stone braziers lining the chamber to flare with brilliant blue flames.

”Adam...” Aurelius murmured, his voice sounding like grinding granite. ”You survived the purge, only to crawl out of the gutters to strike at the man who saved this Empire.”

He raised a single hand, tapping a hidden rune embedded in the armrest of his throne.

A shadow disconnected itself from the corner of the ceiling, materializing into the silent, kneeling form of Commander Vane—head of the Emperor’s personal Praetorian Guard.

”Your Majesty,” Vane rasped, his face entirely concealed beneath a void-steel mask.

”The Order believes they have bought our Capital Guard and trapped our savior,” Aurelius spoke calmly, his tone devoid of heat, carrying only the absolute finality of a sovereign monarch. ”They intend to turn Monday’s grand reopening into an execution ground for Rowan Vance.”

”Shall I mobilize the First Legion and lock down Sol Aethel City immediately, sire?” Vane asked, his hand dropping to the hilt of his black blade.

”No,” Aurelius commanded coldly, a dark, dangerous smirk forming on his face. ”If we deploy the legions now, Roxie’s rats will scatter back into their subterranean holes, and Adam will retreat into the deep floors. They have lined themselves up in a neat, orderly queue—it would be a shame not to let them enter the store.”

The Emperor stood up, his massive stature casting a long shadow across the polished floor.

”Roxie believes she compromised Sector 4 through pillow talk,” Aurelius continued smoothly. ”Let her believe her spatial inhibitors will work. Let Adam bring his thirty-six S-Rank killers directly to Eden International’s doorstep. Maintain standard public security so as not to alert their sleeper agents.”

”And Master Rowan, sire?” Vane inquired softly. ”Do we inform him?”

”Send a private imperial courier to Sunny Vale at dawn,” Emperor Aurelius instructed, looking out the grand window toward the distant, glowing silhouette of Rowan’s estate. ”Give Rowan the exact positions of their spatial inhibitors and the identities of every compromised guard. Rowan Vance saved millions of my subjects with a drop of spring water... let us see how the Gardener of Eden handles weeds when they sprout in his own shop.”

”By your will, Your Majesty,” Vane bowed, vanishing back into the shadows without a sound.

Standing alone in his chamber, Emperor Aurelius poured a small glass of wine, raising it toward the horizon where Sunny Vale rested under the quiet night sky.

The Order of Humanity thought they were springing a trap on a defenceless farmer. They had no idea that on Monday morning, they weren’t walking into a store—they were walking into a meat grinder.

As Sunday’s midnight hours slipped into the chilly quiet of pre-dawn, a solitary beam of golden light severed the cloud line miles above Sol Aethel City.

Emperor Aurelius stepped directly into the troposphere.

High above the clouds, where the air was impossibly thin and frozen, the sovereign of the Empire hovered silently in the sky. His thick imperial cloak billowed like a dark banner against the sea of stars, completely cloaked by a veil of folded spatial wards that rendered him entirely invisible to both the city’s tracking arrays and the Order’s dark detection devices.

Far below, Sol Aethel City spread out like an intricate tapestry of flickering mana lanterns, cobblestone avenues, and soaring marble spires. Aurelius’s golden eyes burned with quiet, cosmic light, piercing cleanly through miles of atmosphere, cloud cover, and concrete to track every moving piece across his capital.

He saw the glowing campfire lights of the endless queue stretched around Eden International’s flagship store, where nobles in velvet robes huddled around portable braziers. He sensed the faint, subterranean spatial fluctuations in the damp tunnels beneath Sector 4, where Adam’s thirty-six S-Rank purists were secretly checking their spatial suppression charges. He felt Roxie’s hidden web of courtesans moving through high-society lounges, quietly feeding false security reports to compromised guard captains.

And farther east, bathed in the soft, emerald pulse of the Fragment of the Origin Earth Pulse, lay Sunny Vale Manor—peaceful, radiant, and oblivious to the dark web coiling around its city boutique.

Aurelius folded his arms across his chest, the ambient temperature around him dropping as his staggering aura compressed into a tight, dormant core.

He had faith in Rowan Vance. He knew the young farmer possessed strength that far exceeded the estimation of both the Imperial Court and the Order’s council. But Aurelius was an emperor first, and a protector of his realm above all else.

If Adam and Roxie brought only thirty-six purists and spatial inhibitors, Rowan would crush them like weeds beneath his boots. But if the Order possessed an unknown variable—a forbidden ancient artifact, a hidden Grade-S monstrosity, or a suicide array designed to wipe out the capital’s population—Aurelius was ready.

Standing sentinel in the troposphere, the Emperor hovered like a suspended star. Should anything go wrong—should a single hair on the head of the city’s savior be threatened beyond his control—Aurelius would not merely descend. He would drop the entire weight of the Imperial Crown straight down from the heavens, reducing every purist, cultist, and traitor in Sol Aethel City to absolute atomic ash before they could even draw another breath.

The sun began to bleed over the eastern horizon, casting golden rays across the troposphere.

Monday morning had arrived.
