The Devil's Favourite Obsession

”Who are you?” she asked again. The same question she had asked quite a few times before. The same question he had dismissed, deflected, ignored, and answered with half-truths or silence or that infuriating smile that said everything and nothing at once.

”I will show you,” he said.

He let go of her hand. He stepped back, creating distance between them. Five feet. Six. Seven. Enough space that the sparkling walls on either side of him framed his body like a portrait.

Then his appearance began to change.

It started in his veins.

Thin black lines appeared along his neck, surfacing beneath the skin like ink rising through paper. They spread downward over his collarbones, across his arms, branching and multiplying, crawling over every inch of exposed flesh as though some ancient poison had awakened inside him and was claiming his body for itself.

His suit dissolved. It dissolved, thread by thread, the dark material thinning into smoke that curled away from his skin and vanished into the cave’s shimmering air. In its place, black silk formed around his waist, loose trousers that sat low on his hips and fell to his ankles, dark as midnight. His torso remained bare. The black veins carved their paths across his chest, over his ribs, along the hard ridges of his abdomen, pulsing faintly as though something alive moved beneath them.

His hair lengthened. It grew in real time, falling past his shoulders, past his shoulder blades, spilling down his back in smooth, dark waves until it reached his waist. The strands were too glossy, too dense, too perfectly black to belong to an ordinary man. They caught the silver light from the cave walls and swallowed it.

Something began to rise from his head.

At first, it looked like a shadow gathering above his skull, shapeless and dark. But the shape turned solid. It drew upward in a slow, dreadful growth, curving backwards and slightly toward the ceiling. Two horns. Ridged and black, tapering to sharp points that gleamed in the sparkling light. They emerged from his temples with the inevitability of something that had always been there and had simply been waiting for permission to surface.

His eyes changed last.

The dark irises she knew, the ones she had searched a hundred times for warmth or truth or any crack in his composure, narrowed into slits. The colour drained from them and was replaced by a bright, burning yellow surrounded by a ring of deep orange. The stare that looked back at her was merciless and inhuman, ancient and absolute, the gaze of something that had existed since before mercy was invented.

Cixi watched in awe. Her lips were parted. Her chest rose and fell in shallow breaths. Her grey eyes were wide, unblinking, reflecting the tiny lights of the cave and the towering figure standing at its centre.

He was bigger than his human self. The transformation had added height and mass, broadening his shoulders, thickening the muscles along his arms and chest, lengthening his frame until he stood close to seven feet.

The black veins pulsed across his bare torso. The horns curved above his head. The silk trousers hung low on his hips. His waist-length hair framed a face that no longer pretended to be anything other than what it was.

Cixi stood before him, and the difference in their size struck her like a physical blow. She had always known she was small. But standing in front of whatever Cassian truly was, she felt tiny. An ant standing before a dinosaur. A pebble at the foot of a mountain. Something so fragile that a single careless gesture from the thing in front of her could end her existence without effort or intention.

And yet.

He was looking at her with those inhumanly yellow-and-orange eyes, and the expression behind them was ..... waiting.

It was waiting.

”Who are you?” Cixi’s voice came out smaller than she intended. The intimidation pressed against her chest like a hand, physical and heavy, forcing the question out of her in barely more than a whisper.

Cassian did not answer immediately. He turned and walked to the far corner of the cave, his bare feet silent on the stone, his waist-length hair swaying against his back. He sat down against the sparkling wall, one leg drawn close to his chest, the other stretched out in front of him, his arm resting across the raised knee.

He looked at her. Then he extended his hand. Palm open. An invitation.

Cixi looked at the hand. She looked at the horns. She looked at the yellow slit eyes burning in the cave’s silver light.

He did not scare her. Not the way he should have. What she felt was not fear but hunger. She wanted to know. She needed to know. Whatever he was, whatever name belonged to the creature sitting in front of her, she wanted it more than she wanted safety.

She walked to him and sat down beside him, her shoulder settling against his arm.

”My real name is Asthor,” he said quietly. ”I am a demon of pride.”

Cixi turned her head and stared at him.

A demon.

Wait.

Was he really a demon? She had joked about it. She had called him an alien, a cursed creature, a non-human, everything under the sun. She had thrown those words at him the way a person throws stones at a wall, never once expecting the wall to confirm that it was, in fact, made of something not from this world.

But she had been kidding.

She had never actually believed it. Not truly. Not in the part of her brain that separated fantasy from the solid, measurable reality she relied on to survive. She had used those words because she had no better ones. Because he was strange and impossible and nothing about him made sense, and calling him alien or cursed was easier than admitting she had no explanation at all.

And now he sat beside her with horns growing from his skull and told her he was a demon of pride, and the joke was not a joke anymore.

She had fallen in love with a demon.

The thought hit her squarely in the chest. She had fallen in love with him. She knew it. She had known it for a while, in the quiet, stubborn way a person knows something they are not ready to say aloud. And now the man she loved was telling her he was a demon.

She had to make a demon fall in love with her.

That was the task in front of her. That was the price of whatever this was between them. Not convincing a billionaire. Not charming a businessman. Not winning over some powerful, difficult man who happened to run hotels and keep secrets. She had to reach something inside a creature that the Bible itself said was beyond redemption.

The Bible.

Cixi’s stomach turned cold.

The Bible said demons were to be feared. The Bible said to stay away. The Bible said they whispered temptation and dragged the willing into darkness and that no good came from their company, ever, under any circumstance.

And Cixi had been playing house with one.

She had been sleeping in his bed. Eating at his table. Sitting on his lap while he kissed her. She had hugged him after a nightmare and felt safe. Safe. In the arms of a demon.

This changed everything.

She stared at the sparkling wall in front of her, her grey eyes wide, her mind racing through every moment she had spent with him, reframing each one through the lens of this single, enormous truth.

Every touch. Every look. Every time he had appeared where she did not expect him. Every time reality had bent around him like water bending around a stone.

A demon of pride.

”Asthor,” she said quietly.

He turned his head and looked down at her. The yellow eyes watched her face with something she could not name.

”Say it again,” he murmured.

”Asthor.”

He leaned his head back against the sparkling wall and closed his eyes.

”No one has called me that,” he said, ”in a very long time.”
