”So Zion’s my neighbor.”
Kael stood in front of Zion’s dorm room, staring at the door with a thoughtful expression.
A few seconds later, a mischievous smile appeared on his face.
”Then I can torture him throughout the semester. He’s close enough for that.”
Kael chuckled to himself.
After everything that had happened over the past week, the thought of having someone familiar nearby wasn’t actually that bad.
Kael was already imagining all the ways he could annoy him.
Knocking on his door at inconvenient times.
Stealing his food.
Maybe waking him up before training.
The possibilities were endless.
”But I shouldn’t start now.”
Kael shrugged.
”It’s best to walk around the academy a bit.”
He turned away from Zion’s door and began walking.
On the other side of the door, however, Zion was standing completely still.
He was holding his blade.
His back was pressed against the door as he squatted down, apparently waiting for something.
The moment Kael’s footsteps disappeared down the corridor, Zion released a long sigh of relief.
”It’s good that...”
He paused.
”I thought that idiot was going to try something.”
Zion slowly lowered his sword.
He had apparently been prepared for an ambush.
After all, he knew Kael well enough to understand that the boy was incapable of leaving a perfect opportunity to cause trouble alone.
Zion dropped his sword beside him.
”Time to sleep.”
He stood up and walked toward his bed.
Kael stepped out of the dormitory area and began exploring the academy.
The first thing he noticed was how quiet everything was.
The academy was usually much livelier.
Students would be walking through the corridors, talking with their friends, heading toward classes, training grounds, or the cafeteria.
Today, however, there were far fewer people.
It made sense.
The holidays had only just ended, and many students were still returning.
Most of the students Kael could see were second-years.
They had already spent an entire year at the academy and were more accustomed to the place.
The first-years, on the other hand, were still relatively new.
Some of them had probably spent the entire holiday recovering from the academy’s training methods.
Kael couldn’t blame them.
He had personally spent his holiday being thrown into a dungeon by Xavier.
Compared to that, a normal holiday probably sounded like paradise.
Kael sighed.
”I guess everyone hasn’t returned yet.”
He continued walking.
After wandering around for a while, he eventually arrived at the Virtual Simulation Room.
Kael stared at the entrance.
He remembered the last time he had been here.
The place had been considerably busier before the holiday.
He pushed the door open and entered.
The moment he stepped inside—
Bump.
Kael walked directly into someone.
He took a step backward.
”Sorry.”
Then he looked up.
His eyebrow immediately rose.
”Charlotte.”
Charlotte stared at him.
She was dressed completely differently from the usual academy uniform.
She wore a tank top and tight training shorts.
Her purple hair was tied into a ponytail, leaving her face exposed.
There were gravity bands around both her wrists and ankles.
They were clearly adding additional weight to her body.
Sweat covered her skin from the training she had just been undergoing.
The normally loose academy uniform hid much of the physical development she had gained over the holiday.
Kael’s gaze lingered for a moment.
Charlotte noticed.
Her cheeks immediately became red.
Kael raised an eyebrow.
Before he could say anything, Charlotte glared at him.
”Kael.”
There was surprise in her voice.
Then her expression changed.
Her eyes narrowed.
”Kael.”
The surprise was gone.
Anger replaced it.
Kael immediately became cautious.
Why does she look like she’s about to kill me?
He hadn’t even done anything yet.
He raised one finger.
”Oh, one question. Why were you dressed like—”
SMACK!
Charlotte’s palm connected directly with his cheek.
Kael’s head snapped sideways.
He stumbled.
His hand immediately went to his face.
”Ow!”
Charlotte’s hand was also pressed against the same spot on her cheek, her own face burning red.
”Where did that come from?”
Kael rubbed his cheek.
”I was just asking questions!”
Charlotte looked away.
Her blush deepened.
Kael stared at her for a moment.
Despite the slap, he couldn’t deny the obvious.
she really is pretty.
His eyes briefly moved over her training clothes.
The uniform normally hid most of her figure.
”Maybe the uniform hides people’s figure.”
He muttered.
Charlotte’s eyes immediately snapped toward him.
”What did you say?”
”Nothing.”
Kael quickly looked away.
He wasn’t interested in getting slapped twice.
Still, Charlotte’s appearance had clearly changed.
The training had given her a more toned physique, and the gravity bands around her limbs made it obvious that she hadn’t spent the holiday relaxing.
She had been working hard.
Charlotte took a breath before explaining.
”Well, for your information, I’m not wearing this to seduce anyone.”
Kael blinked.
”I didn’t say that.”
”It’s just the most suitable outfit for training!”
She looked embarrassed.
”And I wasn’t expecting anyone to come today.”
Kael looked around the room.
”Fair enough.”
He then looked back at her.
”Well, you do look pretty in it.”
He gave her a thumbs-up.
Charlotte froze.
Her face turned even redder.
”Y-You...”
Kael smiled.
”What?”
Charlotte looked away.
”Nothing.”
Kael couldn’t help smiling.
She’s still easy to tease.
But before he could continue, Charlotte suddenly remembered something.
Her expression darkened again.
Kael’s smile disappeared.
”Oh no.”
Charlotte stepped toward him.
”You.”
Kael took a step backward.
”Me?”
”You.”
”Did I do something?”
Charlotte’s eye twitched.
”You’re the idiot who ran away after promising to train me!”
Kael’s mouth opened.
”Oh.”
Charlotte kicked.
Kael immediately jumped backward.
”Whoa!”
She attacked again.
Kael raised his arms.
”Wait!”
Charlotte didn’t listen.
She launched another kick.
Kael caught her shin.
”What are you doing?!”
”Getting revenge!”
”For what?”
”You just trained me in forming my Mana Core and then vanished!”
Kael blinked.
”I didn’t exactly plan to vanish.”
Charlotte pulled her leg free.
”That’s what you say!”
She attacked again.
Kael didn’t bother dodging properly.
He simply allowed her attacks to land against him.
Kick.
Punch.
Another kick.
Then another.
By the time Charlotte finally stopped, Kael was lying on the floor.
His body barely twitched.
Charlotte stood over him, breathing heavily.
She flipped her ponytail back.
”I’ve been training this entire holiday.”
Kael groaned.
”Come on...”
He rolled onto his back.
”I just got back.” Kael complained.
”Is that your only defense?”
Charlotte raised her fist.
Kael immediately lifted both hands.
”Wait!”
She stopped.
Kael slowly pushed himself up.
”But at the very least...”
He looked at her carefully.
”...your training seems to be going well.”
Charlotte paused.
Kael stood completely upright.
He studied the gravity bands around her wrists and ankles.
Then he looked at her stance.
Her breathing.
The way she carried her weight.
The changes were obvious.
She had improved.
A lot.
”You’ve gotten stronger.”
Charlotte’s expression softened slightly.
”Of course I have.”
Kael smiled.
”How much stronger?”
Charlotte’s eyes lit up.
”I’ve been training with Miss Stella.”
Kael nodded.
”That explains it.”
He remembered Stella’s brutal training regime although it seemed like a one time thing.
Charlotte had clearly been pushed hard.
For a brief moment, the anger between them disappeared.
Then she remembered something else.
Her expression became serious.
”Before you try to escape again...”
She stepped closer.
”Why did you run away from your fight with Auriella?”
Kael’s expression froze.
He had completely forgotten about that.
”About that I was actually...”
He stopped.
He looked at Charlotte’s face.
She was waiting for an answer.
Kael glanced around.
There was no one nearby.
He stepped closer to her.
Charlotte raised an eyebrow.
”What?”
Kael leaned toward her ear.
Then he whispered.
”Kidnapped.”
Charlotte’s eyes widened.
Before she could react, Kael immediately covered her mouth.
”Shh!”
Charlotte struggled against his hand.
”Mmph!”
”He’ll hear you.”
Kael looked left.
Then right.
Charlotte stared at him in confusion.
”Who?”
Kael slowly removed his hand.
He sighed.
”That’s a long story.”
Charlotte stared at him.
Kael stared back.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Then Charlotte’s expression changed.
”Wait...”
She lowered her voice.
”Are you telling me you were actually kidnapped?”
Kael sighed.
”Yes.”
”By who?”
Kael looked toward the ceiling.
He remembered Xavier.
The dungeon.
The training.
The slap.
His expression darkened.
”My master.”
Charlotte blinked.
”Your master?”
Kael nodded.
”Xavier.”
Charlotte’s face went pale.
”Oh.”
Kael nodded.
”Exactly.”
Charlotte suddenly understood why Kael had been gone for so long.
She also understood why he had been so reluctant to explain.
Kael sighed.
”I’d rather not talk about it right now.”
Charlotte looked at him for a moment.
Then she nodded.
”Fine.”
She turned toward the training room.
”But you’re still training me.”
Kael stared at her.
”I just survived a dungeon.”
”And?”
”And I deserve a break.”
Charlotte smiled.
”No.”
Kael’s face fell.
”Why does everyone keep doing this to me?”
Charlotte laughed.
For the first time since Kael had returned to the academy, he felt like things were finally becoming normal again.
Or at least as normal as his life could possibly be.
