Chapter List (151)
Kael opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was the familiar ceiling of his dorm room.
For several seconds, he simply stared at it.
He didn’t move.
Then the memories slowly began returning.
The dungeon.
The fifth floor.
Xavier.
The mountain.
And finally...
Kael reached up and held his head.
A numbing pain spread through his skull, leaving him feeling as though someone had repeatedly smashed his head against a wall.
”Ugh...”
He slowly sat up.
His body wasn’t in particularly bad condition anymore. In fact, compared to how he had felt when he first woke up after the dungeon, he was practically fine.
But his head still hurt.
Kael remained seated on his bed for a few moments, trying to piece everything together.
Then he remembered the final thing that happened before he lost consciousness.
His expression darkened.
”That damn old silly joker.”
He muttered angrily.
The memory came back more clearly.
Flashback
Kael and Xavier were walking down the mountain.
The dungeon was already far behind them.
Kael had spent an entire week inside that place, and even though he had survived, he couldn’t say that the experience had been particularly pleasant.
His body had been pushed to its limits.
He had fought countless monsters.
He had nearly died.
And then Xavier had somehow decided that beating him half to death was an appropriate way to end his training.
Kael glanced at the old man walking beside him.
Xavier, meanwhile, looked completely satisfied.
”Well, your training montage is up.”
Kael raised an eyebrow.
”That’s what you’re calling it?”
”Of course.”
Xavier placed his hands behind his head.
”Although I don’t expect you to replicate what I did in my first year at the academy.”
Kael looked at him.
Xavier smirked.
”As my disciple, I don’t expect you to lose a single fight.”
He paused.
”Or the tournament as a whole.”
Kael stared at him.
There was something about the way Xavier said it that made it sound less like encouragement and more like a threat.
”Well, I guess that’s true.”
Kael continued walking.
After a few seconds, however, a mysterious smile appeared on his face.
He turned his head slightly toward Xavier.
”So...”
Xavier glanced at him.
”What?”
”What do I get when I get back to the academy?” Kael asked absentmindedly
Xavier looked confused.
Kael’s smile widened.
”Maybe writing a report about you kidnapping me?”
Xavier stopped walking.
Kael continued.
”I do have a recording of you admitting it.”
He laughed lightly.
”I could probably show it to everyone.”
Xavier remained completely still.
Kael continued walking down the mountain.
He didn’t notice the expression that had appeared on Xavier’s face.
”I see...”
Xavier muttered.
”So that’s how it is.”
Kael kept walking.
A few seconds passed.
Then he noticed something.
The footsteps behind him had stopped.
Kael slowed down.
He looked over his shoulder.
Xavier was no longer walking.
”Master?”
Kael barely finished the word.
SMACK!
A slap landed directly against his left cheek.
Kael froze.
His head turned slightly from the impact.
For a moment, he simply stood there.
His eyes slowly rolled upward.
Then his body collapsed.
He blacked out almost immediately.
Xavier stood over him.
He crouched down and casually began patting Kael’s clothes.
His hands moved through Kael’s pockets.
Nothing.
He checked again.
Still nothing.
Xavier blinked.
”Oh.”
He looked at Kael’s unconscious body.
”No recording device...”
He scratched his head.
”So he was just joking.”
Xavier laughed.
”Too bad that joke had to be about me”
His laughter stopped.
He looked down at Kael’s unconscious body.
The boy had landed in an awkward position.
Xavier’s expression became grim.
”Well at least he’s still alive.”
He sighed.
”Kids these days.”
Flashback Ends
”That damn idiot master of mine jokes a lot, but can’t take a joke.”
Kael stood up from his bed.
”How ironic.”
He rubbed his cheek instinctively.
He could still remember the slap.
”Who even knocks out their own disciple because of a joke?”
Kael shook his head.
”Old man really needs to learn how to take a joke.”
He looked around his room.
Everything seemed familiar.
The bed.
The desk.
The walls.
His belongings.
Everything appeared to be exactly where he remembered leaving it.
For a moment, Kael felt relieved.
He had been gone for months.
He had no idea how the academy would react to his sudden disappearance.
But at least he was finally back.
Then something caught his attention.
Kael frowned.
”Wait.”
He looked around again.
Something felt different.
He walked around his room slowly.
His gaze moved across the walls.
Then he stopped.
”Is it me...”
He tilted his head.
”...or is the room bigger?”
Kael walked toward the door.
He grabbed the handle.
”This wasn’t here before.”
He stared at the door.
”When was this door installed?”
He opened it.
Kael froze.
His mouth slowly opened.
Beyond the door was not a hallway.
It was a living room.
A large living room.
There were couches, a table, shelves, and enough space to comfortably accommodate several people.
Kael stepped forward.
”What the...”
He looked around.
”This wasn’t my room.”
His eyes moved upward.
Then he saw it.
A portrait hanging prominently on the wall.
Kael stared at it.
His expression slowly changed.
The painting depicted Xavier.
The old man had an arrogant smile on his face as he looked down from the portrait.
Kael’s eye twitched.
”No.”
He stepped closer.
”There’s no way.”
He looked at the painting.
Then at the room.
Then back at the painting.
”Wait a minute...”
Kael’s eyes widened.
”Did they change my room?”
He suddenly looked around.
”How long have I been unconscious?”
His voice grew louder.
”How long was I out?!”
Kael rushed through the doorway.
He ran into the corridor of the dormitory.
Then stopped.
He stared at the surroundings.
The dormitory was different from what he remembered.
It wasn’t completely unfamiliar.
But it was clearly an upgraded version of the place he had lived in before.
Kael stared blankly.
Then he slapped his forehead.
Bonk.
”Oh, I get it.”
He sighed.
He should have realized the moment he saw that stupid portrait of Xavier.
A memory suddenly came back to him.
A very funny memory from when he was still playing the game as Leon.
Back then, Leon had also returned to the academy after undergoing training with Xavier.
When Leon first woke up in his new dormitory, the first thing he saw was an image of Xavier.
The reaction had been almost universal.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Xavier’s taining had always been strange which could cause experiences that would leave his disciples questioning their life choices.
Kael remembered the countless times he had played through that section of the game.
Leon hadn’t trained with Xavier in exactly the same way Kael had.
But the dungeon Leon had been sent into was just as dangerous.
In fact, it was so dangerous that in many of Kael’s game runs, Leon had actually died during one of Xavier’s training sessions.
It had always been one of those ridiculous parts of the game.
Players would see Xavier’s portrait and immediately wonder what crazy thing the man had planned this time.
Kael sighed.
”So that’s what this is.”
He looked at the portrait again.
”That bastard.”
He rubbed his cheek.
”And apparently I’m not allowed to make jokes either.”
Kael turned around.
He was about to head back into his room when he noticed someone entering the dormitory.
The person stopped.
Their eyes landed on Kael.
An eyebrow immediately twitched.
Kael recognized him.
A smile appeared on his face.
”Well, Big Brother.”
He folded his arms.
”Arriving a bit late to school, aren’t you?”
Zion stared at him.
Then a mocking grin appeared.
”Says the one who ran away from a rematch against Auriella.”
Kael’s smile disappeared.
Zion continued.
”Because he was scared of losing?”
Kael stared at him.
”You’re kidding, right?”
Zion shrugged.
Kael placed a hand against his chest.
”There’s no way that’s actually how people interpreted...”
He paused.
”...my disappearance.”
Zion’s grin widened.
”Don’t worry.”
He walked closer.
”You’re fine.”
Kael sighed in relief.
Then Zion continued.
”Your reputation is only slightly damaged.”
Kael’s expression changed.
Zion smiled.
”People think you ran away because you were scared of fighting her.”
Kael’s mouth dropped open.
”That’s not what happened!”
Zion shrugged.
”That’s what everyone thinks.”
Kael grabbed his head.
”No.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
”Absolutely not.”
Zion laughed.
”This is torture.”
Kael muttered under his breath.
He had survived a B-rank dungeon.
He had nearly died multiple times.
He had fought without mana.
He had pushed his body through countless battles.
He had even fought Xavier.
Yet somehow, this was what truly wounded him.
His reputation.
Zion seemed to be enjoying Kael’s suffering.
”Well, I need to be heading to my room.”
He walked toward the nearby door.
”If I were you, I’d watch my back.”
Kael looked at him.
”Why?”
Zion stopped.
”Auriella has been brewing in anger since the day you ran away.”
Kael’s face became serious
”I didn’t run away.”
Zion ignored him.
”Enough of that.”
He opened the door to his room.
”I need to sleep. I’ve wasted enough time here.”
He stepped inside.
The door closed.
Kael stood alone in the corridor.
Silence.
He stared at Zion’s door.
Then he sighed.
”Auriella...”
Kael rubbed his forehead.
He had been gone for months on a cruel training,
And somehow, the first thing waiting for him wasn’t a peaceful return.
It was an angry first-year demanding a rematch.
Kael looked toward his room.
Then toward the academy hallway.
He already knew what was coming.
His peaceful return was officially over.
