Harem Master: Seduction System

Chapter 226 Phantom Assembly Makes Its Move

The walk from the main Steele manor to the newly christened Sunken Pearl Estate wasnʼt long, perhaps fifteen minutes at a comfortable pace through manicured gardens and along pristine gravel paths.

For the exhausted royal contingent, however, each step was weighed down by the gravity of their situation and the uncertainty of their future. They were safe, yes, but they were also guests – dependent guests – in the domain of a young man whose power and influence seemed to grow more unnervingly potent by the moment.

Alaric strolled casually beside Queen Margaret, projecting an air of effortless grace and hospitality. Archmage Priscilla walked on Margaretʼs other side, her senses still subtly analyzing the ambient magic of the Steele territory – remarkably clean, stable, and potent. Josephine kept pace slightly behind Margaret, while the cluster of other royal consorts followed like beautiful, slightly bewildered geese, whispering nervously amongst themselves.

ʼHe seems so relaxed,ʼ Margaret thought, glancing sideways at Alaric. His handsome profile was calm, a faint smile playing on his lips. It was the smile of someone utterly in control. ʼThe barrier... the way his family defers to him... even Priscilla seems wary.ʼ The memory of his non-verbal promise – that subtle glance, the possessive glint in his ruby eyes – sent a familiar thrill mixed with apprehension through her. ʼHe expects us to be grateful. And useful.ʼ

Josephine shared similar thoughts, her gaze flicking between Alaric and Margaret. ʼWe need to solidify our position here. Remind him of our value, our loyalty.ʼ She caught Margaretʼs eye and gave a minuscule nod. Time to play their part.

”Young Master Steele,” Margaret began, her voice regaining its practiced courtly charm, ”walking through your lands… it feels like stepping into another world entirely. So peaceful, so secure.”

Alaric inclined his head. ”We strive to maintain order, Your Majesty. A secure home is the foundation of prosperity.”

”Indeed,” Josephine chimed in smoothly, her voice like warm honey. ”And the foundation youʼve built is truly formidable. That defensive barrier… Archmage Priscilla mentioned its unique qualities. Itʼs a testament to your extraordinary talents, Young Master.”

Priscilla, though addressed indirectly, merely gave a noncommittal hum, her gaze still analytical. She wasnʼt about to start singing praises without more data.

Alaric chuckled lightly. ”One does what one must in uncertain times, Lady Josephine.”

ʼSubtle,ʼ he noted inwardly, recognizing their game instantly. ʼPraising my work, trying to impress the Archmage on my behalf. Good girls. They know how to earn their keep.ʼ He let his gaze linger on Josephine for a fraction longer than necessary, a silent acknowledgment that sent a faint blush creeping up her neck.

Margaret picked up the thread seamlessly. ”Such ingenuity requires more than just necessity, though. It requires resources. That barrier, Priscilla theorized it likely utilizes a Seventh Order beast core? Such items are incredibly rare, Young Master Steele. Even the Royal Treasury holds only a handful, accumulated over centuries.”

She paused, feigning casual curiosity. ”Acquiring such a potent core… forgive my asking, but was it a fortunate discovery? Or perhaps a transaction through less… conventional channels?”

Josephine leaned in slightly, her expression mirroring Margaretʼs polite interest. ”We were just wondering, given their scarcity. Itʼs truly remarkable.”

Even Priscillaʼs attention sharpened. This was a valid question. Seventh Order cores werenʼt casually found or easily purchased. Their acquisition usually involved legendary feats or immense political maneuvering.

Alaric paused, turning slightly to face them, a thoughtful expression on his face. He glanced back at the trailing consorts, ensuring they were within earshot, before looking back at Margaret, Josephine, and Priscilla.

”Fortunate discovery? Conventional transaction?” He let out a soft laugh, shaking his head. ”No, Your Majesty, nothing quite so simple.”

He met Priscillaʼs direct gaze. ”It wasnʼt acquired. It was… harvested.”

A collective intake of breath rippled through the group of consorts. Harvested?

”You mean…” Margaret began, her eyes widening slightly.

”I mean,” Alaric stated calmly, resuming his stride, ”that I deemed the core necessary for the territoryʼs enhanced protection. So, I assembled a team.”

He gestured vaguely. ”Loyal subordinates, skilled individuals from within my familyʼs sphere of influence. We tracked down a suitable candidate – a Thunder Tyrant Behemoth near Mount Cinderfell, a peak Seventh Order specimen known for its volatile power.”

He spoke of hunting a Seventh Order beast as casually as discussing a trip to the market.

”You… hunted… a Seventh Order beast?” Priscilla stopped walking, her voice tight with disbelief. The other women halted too, staring at Alaric.

”We did,” Alaric confirmed simply.

”With… with an Archmage? Or a Martial King?” Priscilla pressed, her mind racing. That was the only logical explanation. A Seventh Order beast was roughly equivalent in power. Taking one down required comparable strength. ”Who led the hunt? Was it one of the Kingdomʼs hidden experts? Someone from another nation?”

Alaric smiled faintly, enjoying the stunned silence.

”No Archmage accompanied us, Archmage Priscilla,” he stated clearly. ”No Martial King lent their blade.”

He paused for effect, letting the impossibility sink in.

”My team engaged the beast, weakened it through coordinated strategies and specialized equipment I provided.” His gaze hardened slightly, a flicker of the ruthlessness beneath the surface showing through. ”And when the moment was right…”

He tapped his own chest lightly. ”I delivered the final blow myself. A rather potent spell Iʼve been developing.”

Silence. Utter, profound silence, broken only by the gentle breeze rustling the leaves in the nearby trees.

Margaret and Josephine stared at him, their mouths slightly agape. They knew he was powerful, terrifyingly so in private, but this… this was beyond comprehension.

The consorts looked utterly bewildered, unsure if they should be terrified or awestruck.

Priscilla felt a distinct chill despite the pleasant weather. Her analytical mind struggled to process the claim. A Grandmaster Mage – because Alaric was still only a Grandmaster, his aura confirmed it – personally finishing off a peak Seventh Order beast? A creature whose raw power could rival her own?

ʼImpossible,ʼ was her first thought. ʼOr… is it?ʼ She recalled the sheer sophistication of the barrier. The unnatural speed of his rise. The unsettling depth in his eyes. Could he possess some unknown trump card? Some artifact? Some forbidden technique that bridged the gap in rank? Or was he simply… lying? Exaggerating his role?

But his tone held no uncertainty. It was a statement of fact.

Margaret recovered first, her training kicking in, overlaid with her conditioned response to Alaricʼs displays of power. Awe replaced shock.

”Young Master Steele!” she gasped, her voice filled with reverence. ”That is… astonishing! To face such a creature, let alone triumph… truly, your capabilities are beyond measure!”

Josephine quickly followed suit, her eyes shining with what looked like adoration (though Alaric knew it was mingled with fear and calculated subservience). ”Unbelievable! You personally felled a Seventh Order beast? Itʼs the stuff of legends! We are truly in the presence of greatness!”

Their praise washed over Alaric, bolstering the narrative he wanted to project. Strong, capable, decisive, a protector who achieved the impossible.

ʼGood,ʼ he acknowledged their performance with another subtle glance, this one promising specific, intimate rewards later. He saw the answering flicker of heat in both their eyes.

Priscilla remained silent, observing him. ʼHe claims it. Blatantly. If true, heʼs far more dangerous than anyone suspects. If false, heʼs incredibly bold. Either way… caution is paramount.ʼ She made a mental note to gather any scrap of information possible about the ʼteamʼ and ʼspecialized equipmentʼ he mentioned.

”It was a necessary risk,” Alaric said modestly, though his eyes gleamed. ”The core was vital for ensuring the safety of all who reside here. Including,” he added, his gaze sweeping over the royal women, ”our esteemed guests.”

He gestured ahead. ”Ah, here we are.”

They had arrived. The Sunken Pearl Estate stood before them.

It was, as promised, a large and luxurious mansion. Not quite palace-sized, but certainly grander than any typical noble estate. Built in a slightly more modern style than the main Steele manor, with clean lines, large windows, and elegant balconies overlooking meticulously landscaped gardens. It was surrounded by its own high, discreet wall, ensuring privacy.

It looked beautiful. Inviting.

And utterly isolated. A beautiful cage.

”Impressive,” Margaret murmured, genuinely taken by the architecture.

”It seems quite… comfortable,” Josephine added, relief evident in her voice.

”Please,” Alaric said, gesturing towards the entrance where servants already waited, bowing deeply. ”Make yourselves at home. Rest, recover. Anything you require, simply inform the staff here, or send word to the main manor.”

He turned to Priscilla. ”Archmage, your expertise may be called upon later, perhaps to consult on integrating your remaining mages with our defensive structure, once they are rested. But for now, please, recuperate.”

Priscilla nodded stiffly. ”Thank you, Young Master Steele. Your hospitality is… noted.”

Alaric gave a final, charming smile to the group. ”I shall leave you ladies to settle in. Welcome, once again, to Steele territory.”

With a slight bow, he turned and walked back towards the main manor, leaving the Queen, the Archmage, the Royal Consorts, and their uncertain future within the beautiful walls of the Sunken Pearl Estate.

While the remnants of Eloriathʼs royalty found uneasy sanctuary within Alaric Steeleʼs fortress, the rest of the kingdom burned.

Ingranadʼs newly empowered lieutenants – the corrupted Archmages Gideon and Rahel, the demonic Martial Kings Patrick and Madleen – unleashed their fury with terrifying efficiency.

They didnʼt employ complex strategies initially. There was no need. Raw, overwhelming power was their weapon.

Gideon Thorne, now a being of living magma and crackling shadow-lightning, flew above the fertile plains of the Duchy of Silverstream. Below him, terrified peasants and local militia futilely tried to defend their towns.

”Remember this warmth?” the corrupted Gideon rasped, spreading his arms wide. Fire, blacker and hotter than anything he wielded in life, rained down. Not precise spells, but a literal storm of infernal fire. Buildings ignited instantly, fields turned to ash, screams melted into the roar of flames.

”A gift! From your former protector!” he cackled, incinerating a fleeing family with a casual flick of his wrist.

Further west, near the mining cities of the Ironpeak Barony, Rahel Klinghoffer glided through the air like a specter of death. The dwarves and human miners had strong defenses, sturdy walls, rune-warded gates.

They meant nothing.

Rahel didnʼt bother blasting them down. She wove intricate spells of decay and unravelling. Stone crumbled to dust, metal warped and rusted in seconds, ancient protective runes sputtered and died under her arcane assault. Walls simply dissolved, exposing the terrified inhabitants.

”Your wards are… insufficient,” the demonic Rahel whispered, her voice echoing in the minds of the defenders just before shadows coalesced within their ranks, tearing them apart from the inside. She didnʼt kill quickly. She preferred sowing terror, letting despair break them before the lesser demons swarmed in to feast.

Martial King Patrick, his form now encased in jagged, demonic plate that seemed fused to his flesh, led legions of Hulking Brutes and Gorefiends against the fortress city of Heldenport, a major trading hub defended by the Dukeʼs knights and seasoned mercenaries.

The knights charged, their lances aimed true, their faith in steel and courage unwavering.

Patrick met them head-on. He didnʼt even draw a weapon. His demonic strength shattered lances, crushed armour, broke warhorses with contemptuous ease. His corrupted Battle Aura pulsed outwards, a wave of pure fear that broke formations and sent veteran warriors fleeing in panic.

”Chivalry?” the thing wearing Patrickʼs face snarled, tearing a knight in half with its bare hands. ”Honour? These are illusions! Only power matters! Only slaughter!” He roared, plunging into the fray, an unstoppable engine of destruction, his demonic legions pouring through the breaches he created.

And in the dense woodlands of the Verdant Reach, home to skilled rangers and elusive elven communities allied with Eloriath, Martial King Madleen Hector danced a lethal ballet.

She moved like smoke through the trees, faster than any mortal eye could follow. Her senses, enhanced by demonic power, pinpointed hidden ambushes, detected magical traps. The rangersʼ arrows dissolved before reaching her, the elvesʼ nature magic flickered and died in her presence.

She wielded twin blades forged from shadow and hate, dispatching elite elven guardians and human rangers with contemptuous ease, her movements a terrifying blend of her former martial skill and newfound demonic agility. She didnʼt just kill; she toyed with them, outmaneuvering, disarming, humiliating them before the final, cruel cut.

”Adaptability,” she hissed, appearing behind a renowned elven blad estrange just as he launched an attack, severing his spine with a flick of her wrist. ”The key to survival. And you... failed to adapt.” She laughed, a cold, sharp sound, as lesser demons swarmed the remaining defenders.

City after city, town after town, duchy after barony – the reports filtering back to the few remaining pockets of resistance were uniformly horrifying. Eloriath was collapsing faster than anyone had thought possible. The Royal Army, decapitated by the loss of its leaders and shattered by the failed expedition, offered little organized resistance. Local lords and governors, reliant on forces now proven utterly inadequate, watched their domains crumble.

Panic reigned. Refugees choked the roads, heading nowhere safe, often falling prey to demonic patrols or simple starvation. Authority evaporated.

It was in this desperate vacuum that a new, shadowy power began to make its move.

Lord Harrington, Governor of the coastal city of Porthaven, stared blankly at the map spread across his desk. Red markers, indicating demonic control or active sieges, now covered almost two-thirds of the Kingdom of Eloriath. His own city, while still holding, was increasingly isolated. Trade had ceased. Food was dwindling. His city watch was stretched thin, morale plummeting.

Word had reached him – fragmentary, terrifying – of the demonic onslaught led by figures resembling the kingdomʼs fallen heroes. Heʼd dismissed it as fear-mongering until multiple, independent reports confirmed the impossible.

He felt utterly hopeless. The Royal Palace wasnʼt responding to communications. The army was scattered. Neighbouring provinces were overrun.

A knock on his study door startled him. ”Enter,” he called wearily.

His chief aide entered, looking pale and nervous. ”My Lord Governor… there is someone here to see you. He… he insists.”

”Insists?” Harrington frowned. ”Who is it? If itʼs another merchant demanding compensation for lost cargo, tell him the city coffers are empty!”

”No, my Lord,” the aide swallowed hard. ”He calls himself… Silas Vane. He says he represents… the Phantom Assembly.”

Harrington froze. The Phantom Assembly? The infamous dark guild? Assassins, spies, smugglers, dealers in forbidden magic and illicit goods? They operated in the shadows, enemies of the crown, thorns in the side of every legitimate authority. What could they possibly want with him now?

”The Phantom Assembly?” Harrington repeated, disbelief warring with a flicker of morbid curiosity. ”Here? In the Governorʼs mansion?”

”He… bypassed the outer security somehow, my Lord,” the aide admitted nervously. ”Heʼs waiting in the antechamber. Polite, but… unnerving.”

Harrington hesitated. Meeting with such a figure was dangerous, potentially treasonous under normal circumstances. But circumstances were far from normal. Porthaven was dying. Maybe… maybe any port in a storm?

”Very well,” he sighed, straightening his tunic, trying to project an authority he no longer felt. ”Show him in.”

The aide scurried out, returning moments later followed by a man who seemed utterly unremarkable, yet commanded attention. Silas Vane was of average height and build, dressed in well-tailored but plain dark clothing. His features were bland, easily forgettable, except for his eyes. They were sharp, intelligent, and held a calm, assessing quality that seemed to see right through Harringtonʼs facade. He moved with a quiet confidence that spoke of hidden strength.

”Lord Governor Harrington,” Silas Vane said, his voice smooth and level. He offered a slight, almost imperceptible bow that felt more like a courtesy observed than genuine deference. ”Thank you for granting me this audience.”

”Mr. Vane,” Harrington replied stiffly, gesturing towards a chair he didnʼt expect the man to take (he didnʼt). ”My aide tells me you represent the Phantom Assembly. An organization my office usually expends considerable effort trying to eradicate.”

Vane smiled faintly. ”Times change, Lord Governor. Priorities shift. The pests plaguing your city are no longer errant smugglers or ambitious thieves. They are… considerably more destructive.”

”The demons,” Harrington stated flatly. ”Yes, I am acutely aware.”

”Indeed,” Vane continued, clasping his hands behind his back. ”And your city watch, brave though they may be, are ill-equipped to handle the escalating threat. Your walls may hold against imps and brutes for now, but reports suggest… enhanced leadership among the demonic forces. Beings capable of negating conventional defenses.” He clearly alluded to the corrupted heroes.

Harrington didnʼt respond. Vane knew too much.

”Porthaven is a valuable port,” Vane went on conversationally. ”A center of commerce, or it was. Rich resources, skilled artisans, a strategic location. It would be a pity to see it reduced to rubble and ashes, wouldnʼt it?”

”Get to the point, Vane,” Harrington snapped, his patience thin. ”What does the Phantom Assembly want?”

Vaneʼs smile didnʼt waver. ”Opportunity, Lord Governor. The Phantom Assembly thrives where established order fails. And Eloriathʼs order,” he gestured vaguely at the map, ”is failing spectacularly.”

”We have resources,” Vane stated calmly. ”Skilled operatives – mages, martialists, specialists far exceeding the capabilities of your city watch. We have intelligence networks that reach where royal spies cannot. We have… methods… for dealing with troublesome entities, demonic or otherwise.”

He paused, letting his words sink in. ”The Radiant Church is faltering. The Royal Army is broken. The nobility is scattered or besieged. Who else can offer you a realistic chance of survival?”

Harrington stared at him, suspicion warring with desperation. ”Youʼre offering… help? The Phantom Assembly wants to fight demons?”

”Letʼs call it a mutually beneficial arrangement,” Vane corrected smoothly. ”We provide security. We eliminate demonic threats within Porthaven and its immediate surroundings. We ensure the city continues to function, continues to exist.”

”And in return?” Harrington asked, dreading the answer.

”In return,” Vaneʼs eyes glinted, ”the Phantom Assembly requires… accommodation. Unfettered access to the city and its port facilities, naturally. Certain… adjustments to tariffs and regulations for goods passing through channels we designate. A degree of operational autonomy within the city – our agents answer to us, not to your watch commanders.”

He leaned forward slightly, his voice dropping. ”And, of course, a formal agreement. Porthaven acknowledges the Phantom Assembly as its primary security provider. You grant us legitimacy, Governor. Influence.”

It was extortion, thinly veiled as aid. Allow a criminal organization to essentially take over the cityʼs security and economy in exchange for protection from the demons.

”Thatʼs… preposterous!” Harrington sputtered. ”Grant legitimacy to assassins and spies? Give you free rein?”

”Is it more preposterous than becoming demon food, Lord Governor?” Vane countered calmly. ”Look at the map. Look at the reality outside your window. How long before a corrupted Archmage decides to melt your walls? How long before a demonic Martial King leads a legion against your gates? Your current path leads only to annihilation.”

He straightened up. ”We offer survival. We offer order, albeit our own brand of it. The choice is yours. We are making similar offers to other besieged cities, other desperate nobles across the kingdom. Lord Fitzwilliam in Oakhaven has already seen the wisdom in our proposal. Lady Isabella of Gryphonʼs Keep is currently… considering.”

Harrington felt trapped. Damned if he did, damned if he didnʼt. Accepting meant surrendering control to criminals. Refusing meant almost certain destruction.

”Think carefully, Lord Governor,” Silas Vane said softly. ”Survival often requires uncomfortable compromises. We can have operatives reinforcing your defenses within hours of an agreement. Or… we can leave you to your fate.”

He placed a small, dark calling card on the edge of Harringtonʼs desk. ”Send word when youʼve made your decision. But donʼt take too long. The tide of darkness waits for no man.”

With another almost imperceptible nod, Silas Vane turned and walked silently out of the study, leaving Governor Harrington alone with an impossible choice, the map of his dying kingdom spread before him like a shroud.

Similar scenes played out across the crumbling Kingdom of Eloriath. Phantom Assembly agents, emerging from the shadows, approached desperate leaders, offering protection, offering survival, at the price of submission to their shadowy influence.

The dark guild, long suppressed, was rising, feeding on the carcass of a kingdom, positioning itself to become a major power in the chaos that followed the demonsʼ devastating surge.
