The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

In this state—soul projected outside his body—everything changed.

His soul sense range boosted by 1.5x. 105 meters became roughly 150 meters of perception. The fog’s interference vanished entirely—his manifesting soul cut through the scrambled perception field like a blade through silk.

His soul power was more reflective in this form—thrum—denser, sharper, more responsive. Soul attacks cast from this state would cause significantly more damage than normal. A Soul Spike fired from his manifested soul could crack a soul’s defenses.

But the cost was real. His soul and body were left vulnerable. His physical form sat motionless on the ground—no soul defending it, no soul sense monitoring his surroundings through conventional means. If someone attacked his body while his soul was projected, he’d have to retract instantly—losing the extended perception and potentially damaging his soul in the process.

Kael extended his soul sense outward.

Thrum.

His perception swept through the fog. The underground world mapped itself in spiritual detail—stone pillars, cooled magma rivers, the distant glow of the Forge Twins’ city behind him.

People. Multiple signatures scattered through the fog.

To his left—three cultivators, dead. Their bodies lay crumpled near a collapsed pillar. Golem victims. Their storage rings had been taken by other passing cultivators.

Ahead—seven signatures moving in the same direction. Toward the furnace. Toward the Heavenly Flame. Their auras ranged from Peak Mana Heart to Spirit Soul Rank 1. They were navigating the fog carefully.

Behind them—more signatures. More people converging on the same point.

Kael got a general understanding of the situation. The fog zone was a buffer between the city and the furnace. The golems were guardians—left by whatever it was that left them to thin the herd. Most cultivators either went around the fog or died trying to cross it.

Those who made it through were heading for the flame.

Satisfied, Kael retracted his soul. Whoosh. The dark, runic apparition folded back into his chest—thrum—and his consciousness returned to his body.

He opened his eyes.

The six shadow phantoms were still engaged with the two golems—CLANG, CRASH—a stalemate of attrition. The phantoms couldn’t damage the Void-Adamantite bodies. The golems couldn’t catch the phantoms.

Soul attacks won’t work on them either, Kael thought.

But they’re not agile.

So I need something that hits hard enough to break Void-Adamantite.

Kael clapped his hands together.

CLAP.

Above him, clouds gathered. Rumble. Dark thunderheads materialized from condensed mana—crackle—forming a storm cloud in the underground space. Lightning sparked across the clouds—fzzzt—blue-white arcs dancing between the cloud formations.

A minute passed.

The lightning in the clouds became more apparent—crackle-crackle—denser, louder, more violent. The thunderheads swelled—rumble—growing larger, darker, heavier with electrical energy. The fog around the clouds illuminated—flash—each lightning burst casting stark white shadows through the mist.

Other cultivators in the fog could see it. Despite the obstruction—the lightning was too bright, too dense, too loud to be hidden. Heads turned. Cultivators paused their progress, staring at the growing storm above.

Kael infused his lightning rule power into the clouds.

WHUUUM.

The storm responded. The lightning shifted—crackle—becoming something fundamentally different. Not just electrical energy anymore. Rule-infused lightning. Lightning that carried the conceptual weight of the universe’s equilibrium. Lightning that existed to destroy in order to create balance.

The clouds turned blue-gold—shimmer—and the air itself hummed with compressed power.

”Thunder God Technique, Second Form—”

CRACKLE.

”Wrath of the Thunder God.”

The remaining four shadow phantoms jumped back simultaneously—whoosh—retreating from the golems. As they moved, they extended shadow tendrils—whip-whip—wrapping them around the golems’ limbs. The tendrils wouldn’t hold them long, but they didn’t need to.

A second. That was enough.

BOOOOOM!

A giant lightning strike descended from the clouds. Not just one bolt but a concentrated pillar of rule-infused lightning—FWOOOOM—thick as a tree trunk, blazing with blue-gold fire. It struck both golems simultaneously.

CRACK-SHATTER-BOOM!

The Void-Adamantite bodies held for a fraction of a second—creak—then cracked. The lightning rule power bypassed the metal’s physical resistance, attacking the runic framework directly. The artificial mana cores overloaded—BZZZT—and exploded.

BOOM. BOOM.

The golems detonated. Void-Adamantite fragments scattered across the foggy ground—cling, cling—smoking, cracked, unrecognizable. The runic inscriptions that had given them life dissolved—fzzzt—their power spent.

Kael released the Shadow Phantom technique. Pop, pop, pop, pop. The clones dissolved into shadow. What a waste of such beautiful architecture.

Hhhh... hhhh...

The mana cost was significant. Rule power drained his reserves aggressively—even with his Transcendent Core’s 480% capacity. The Thunder God Technique’s second form, enhanced with lightning rule power, had consumed roughly 15% of his total mana.

When the dust cleared and settled, the golems were in an unrecognizable state. Scattered fragments of Void-Adamantite. Shattered mana cores. Dissolved runes. Nothing remained functional.

Kael pocketed several Void-Adamantite fragments—they would be useful for runic inscription later—clink—and flew upward.

WHOOSH.

He rose above the fog layer, his Cloak of Flight carrying him over the misty zone. Below, the fog stretched like a white sea. Ahead, the air grew warmer—hiss—the ambient temperature climbing steadily.

The Heavenly Flame was close.

He flew for another thirty minutes. The landscape below changed—the dwarven city gave way to rocky terrain, then to volcanic glass formations, then to a vast cavern. The air shimmered with heat distortion—fzzzt—and the ambient mana shifted from neutral to fire-aspected.

Then he saw it.

The Heavenly Flame.

It rested on a pedestal of volcanic glass at the center of the cavern—small, fist-sized, but radiating power that made even Kael hesitate. The flame was dark—flicker—not the orange-gold of normal fire, but a deep, shifting purple-black. It pulsed with sentient awareness—thrum—as if breathing. The air around it distorted reality itself—space bending, light warping, mana evaporating.

Kael’s Spirit Eyes activated—flicker—and the System fed him information.

[Demonic Asura Lotus Flame. Ranked 7th on the Heavenly Flame List.]

Heavenly Flames were not ordinary fire. They were sentient, primordial forces of nature—condensed manifestations of fire law that had gained consciousness over millennia. Each Heavenly Flame possessed unique properties, personalities, and power levels. They were ranked from weakest to strongest on the Heavenly Flame List—a catalogue maintained by ancient cultivators who had studied these entities for tens of thousands of years.

The Demonic Asura Lotus Flame was ranked 7th—placing it among the peak Heavenly Flames. It was a dark flame—born from the convergence of demonic energy and primordial fire. Its properties included: destructive heat capable of melting Special Grade weapons, corrosive aura that dissolved mana barriers, and a sentient will that resisted all forms of control. Taming it required either overwhelming power or a specialized method—like the Nirvana Devouring Script.

But between everyone and the flame stood a massive formation.

The formation was enormous—a hundred-meter circle of runic inscriptions carved into the volcanic glass floor. Golden runes pulsed with residual energy—hummm—forming layers of barriers and seals around the flame. The formation was ancient but intact—still functioning after five thousand years.

And around the formation, more than fifty cultivators had gathered.

Kael descended—whoosh—landing at the edge of the crowd. His Spirit Eyes swept the gathered factions—flicker—cataloging each group.

The Frostspine Bear Clan—Northern sector. Beast-kin with ice-affinity bear bloodlines. Massive, armored, radiating cold hostility. Five members, all Peak Mana Heart.

The Glacier Court—Northern sector. A human faction specializing in ice manipulation. Three members—two at Peak Mana Heart, one at Spirit Soul Rank 1.

The Aurora Hunter’s Association—A decentralized guild of beast tamers and mercenaries. Eight members of varying cultivation.

The Celestial Tempest Sect—Eastern sector. The dominant sect of the East. Specialists in lightning and wind manipulation. Six members. This was likely the sect of the dead Darian Scott—whose soul currently resided inside Kael’s Netherworld Soul Locking Flag.

The Phoenix Clan—Four members. Including the fire phoenix Kael had met at Vaelthor’s stairway. Her crimson-gold hair was unmistakable. She stood at Peak Mana Heart, her fiery aura pressing outward.

The Heavenly Sword Pavilion—A sect entirely devoted to the sword. Five members. They produced the purest sword cultivators—disregarding all other paths. Arrogant, but their combat prowess backed their attitude. Three at Peak Mana Heart, two at Spirit Soul Rank 1.

The Jade Lotus Palace—An all-female sect specializing in Ice, Water, and Alchemy. Four members. Highly secretive. Their techniques rivaled the Frostveil family’s ice arts.

The Azure Dragon Manor—Western sector. A hybrid clan of beast-kin and humans who revered the Dragon Clan. Physical augmentation and bloodline awakening specialists. Five members.

The Blood River Sect—An unorthodox, demonic sect practicing blood manipulation and forbidden arts. Four members. Constantly at war with orthodox sects but too entrenched to destroy.

And scattered among them—IGF cadets from various sectors. Six of them. Their auras were uniformly powerful.

Over fifty cultivators stood waiting for who would make the first move for the Demonic Asura Lotus Flame.
