Unexpected Second Chance at Love

Chapter 987: Going to regret

On the far edge of the city, a forgotten building sagged against the snow-covered ground. Its metal doors were crooked, one clinging stubbornly to its rusted hinges while the other leaned inward like a broken limb.

A damp, metallic chill hung in the air. The scent of mold, rot, and rust pressed into every breath.

Inside was a maze of narrow hallways lined with cracked plaster and warped floorboards. Somewhere deep inside, a lightbulb flickered — an anemic glow that warped the shadows, making them lurch and twitch like something alive.

In the largest room, Ji Jingxu hung suspended by thick, rusted chains that groaned whenever he moved. The cuffs dug into his wrists, the metal biting until skin split and bled. His arms ached, shoulders screaming from being held above his head for what felt like hours — maybe longer.

The tips of his toes brushed the floor, but barely; it was just enough to keep him from hanging limp, yet never enough to relieve his muscles.

His calves cramped with each shiver. The cold seemed to crawl beneath his skin, gnawing into his bones until his teeth chattered despite his efforts to stay still.

He tried to control his breathing, to keep it slow and steady, but every sound in the abandoned building felt amplified — the soft drip of water somewhere in the dark, the distant scuttle of rats through loose debris, the whisper of wind curling through the jagged window frames. The chains gave a metallic creak when he shifted, the sound too loud in the oppressive silence.

Suddenly, the door at the far side of the room groaned open.

Two men stepped inside, their heavy boots thudding against the floor. The first was tall and broad, his face swallowed by the shadow of a hood. The second was thinner, his lips curved in a cruel smirk.

”Well, well, well.”

The thin one drawled, crouching so they were eye-level.

”Our guest is still breathing. Guess someone still thinks he will be rescued... how stupid.”

Jingxu forced himself to meet the man’s gaze, his eyes cold and sharp despite the fatigue dragging at him.

”If you’re waiting for me to beg, you’ll be waiting a long time.”

He rasped with eyes glaring murderously at the two men.

”You’re all going to regret this.”

The thin man’s smirk deepened.

”Begging’s not necessary. We just need you... as leverage.”

He leaned closer, the stink of stale cigarettes clinging to him.

”Your sister’s going to come for you. And when she does...”

His grin widened into something feral.

”...she won’t be leaving.”

Jingxu’s jaw clenched. He knew Yue Ling — she would never walk into a trap blindly. But he also knew these men weren’t bluffing. If killing him served their purpose, they’d do it without hesitation.

The tall one stepped forward, gripping a fistful of Jingxu’s hair and yanking his head back.

”Stop talking to him.”

He muttered to his partner.

”Boss wants him alive, not broken.”

”Alive doesn’t mean comfortable.”

The thin man sneered, voice low and venomous as he spat the words out.

”The only one who will regret it is his family.”

The tall man released Jingxu with a shove, and both left, shutting the door behind them. The heavy click of the lock echoed in the silence.

Jingxu let his head fall forward, his breath hitching. Warm trickles of blood slid from his wrists down his forearms, disappearing into his sleeves.

He closed his eyes and tried to focus, not on the burning ache in his arms or the cold, but on the thought of Yue Ling’s face. She would be moving already. She would be hunting them. And when she found this place... he almost pitied the men keeping him here. Almost.

Somewhere deeper in the building, a different sound filled the air — the low hum of voices, a woman’s soft moans, and the scrape of a chair leg across the floor.

The masked man lounged back in a battered chair, his posture one of control and ease, though his gloved hands gripped the woman straddling his lap.

After his little video call with Yue Ling, he needed to relieve himself from the need of having the woman. Thus, he called for one of his women.

Though she wasn’t the one he wanted, she would do for now.

Unaware of his thoughts, the woman moved with deliberate alluringness, her body rolling against his as if savoring every inch of his presence. A black mask concealed her features, but her parted lips and the tilt of her head spoke of shameless pleasure.

”Ah~ Yes~ It’s been so long since you called for me.”

She purred, her tone thick with pleasure, her hands tracing his shoulders to his toned chest.

He responded with a low groan, his hands sliding up her back, fingers pressing possessively at the curve of her waist.

”You’re convenient.”

He replied bluntly, his tone thick with self-satisfaction. His eyes roam over her alluring body as though she were both a prized possession and a tool.

His grip on her hips tightened, guiding her rhythm until she gasped and dug her nails into his shoulders as he squeezed her breasts.

”And you always know when to show up.”

Sliding her fingers along the edge of his jaw, she let her nails scrape lightly against his exposed chin.

”You know...”

She murmured, her voice warm and mocking all at once.

”If you keep talking like that, I might start thinking you’d miss me if I didn’t come.”

His gaze darkened, the faintest glint of amusement in his eyes.

”Don’t flatter yourself.”

He said evenly, though the hand gripping her thigh betrayed the faintest twitch of possessiveness.

”I call. You come. That’s all there is to it.”

She ignores his tone and lets out a soft laugh, leaning in until her breath brushes his ear, her hips moving to match his trust.

”So, what happens to the boy when you get the ransom?”

His movements slowed, deliberate, as though savoring the question.

”What else? Once I have the money, I can decide what to do with him. And then...”

He smiled faintly, a glint of cruelty in his eyes.

”...I take my time breaking his sister. Tame her. Make her my slave in bed.”

Her lips curved in a knowing smile beneath the mask. She arched slightly, forcing him to meet her gaze.

”Taming her? Or breaking her?”

He laughed, the sound low and menacing.

”Both.”

The tension between them shifted—less passion, more power. His mind was already picturing Yue Ling in her place, bound and defiant until he bent her to his will. The woman on his lap was nothing more than a stand-in for that fantasy.

His hands tightened on her hips, drawing a startled gasp from her as he pushed her into a quicker rhythm, his body speaking the hunger his words could not.

The woman stilled for a heartbeat, watching him as if trying to read the thoughts behind his mask. He didn’t notice — or didn’t care. His mind was elsewhere, picturing Yue Ling not as an adversary, but as a possession.

”You’ll get yourself killed underestimating her. She has the backing of two powerful figures.”

The woman moaned her last words as the man thrust up into the deepest part of her.

He looked at her then, his expression unreadable.

”Everyone breaks eventually. And even if two powerful figures are backing her, so be it. They will never find me. No one ever does.”

His right hand raised from her breast to her throat, and he tightened his grip, not enough to suffocate her. His breathing turned heavy, and he increased his thrusting before releasing his load inside of her with a groan.

When he finally stilled, the air between them was heavy, her breathing uneven. He released her slowly, almost lazily, as though dismissing her was more satisfying than their time together.

He reached for the pack of cigarettes on the desk, tapping one out and lighting it with practiced ease.

”You should leave. Your job here is done.”

She arched a brow beneath her mask, still trying to catch her breath from what they had just done together.

”You called me here, and now you’re throwing me out?”

”Do I need to repeat myself?”

His tone left no room for negotiation.

She held his gaze for a moment longer, then stepped back. She quickly puts on her dress and heels, knowing that if she were to say anything more, the man might end her.

”Fine. Call me if you need any more entertainment.”

Her heels clicked softly on the floor as she moved toward the door, pausing only when one of his men entered. His broad frame blocked most of the doorway.

As they passed each other, his hand brushed against her hip — a silent, wordless message that made her smirk.

The masked man watched without a flicker of emotion, his eyes cold and detached. It didn’t matter who touched the women he’d slept with—once he was done with them, they were discarded like worn-out tools, passed along to his men without hesitation or regard.

To him, they were nothing more than objects, vessels for his pleasure and pawns in his cruel game.

Their worth vanished the moment his desire was sated, and any feelings or loyalty they might have had meant nothing.

He took no pride in their suffering; to him, they were merely means to an end—expendable and replaceable.

”Did the boy beg?”

He asked once the woman left the room, flicking cigarette ash into the tray.

The man shook his head.

”Not a sound. He’s tougher than most grown men I’ve seen. Military family, I guess.”

The Boss considered this as he exhaled a slow stream of smoke. He remembered when they’d first brought Ji Jingxu in.

They beat him until he was bloodied and battered, but the boy remained silent. Even under the worst beatings, the boy hadn’t made a sound. It was impressive, in a way. But admiration wasn’t part of his nature.

”Make sure everyone’s ready by tomorrow night.”

He said finally, crushing the cigarette in the ashtray.

”If they want him back, they’ll play by my rules.”

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his phone and typed a brief message, his lips curling into a faint, humorless smile.

”Of course, I’m still debating whether I want to kill the boy or not.”

His laughter followed him as he stepped into the hallway, the sound carrying down the empty corridors, mingling with the echo of his boots on the floorboards.

Somewhere not far away, Ji Jingxu lifted his head at the sound, his pulse steady despite the ache in every muscle. He needs to hold on until tomorrow night.

He didn’t know the details of his masked man’s plan, but he knew that Yue Ling would not let it play out the way they thought it would.

And when she came for him, this building would see blood before dawn.
