Chapter 1775: Worse News

Jema and Oleander stood along with their people, looking down at their individual reports. Ever since the two had decided to work together, their people had come together as well.

A few of them had been a little reluctant to do so, because they originally wanted these people to get married to the Royal families of their respective nations. But the two had managed to convince them that married to the royals or not, they would look out for the needs of Marsh and Olvia first and foremost.

Jema didn’t like this report at all. It seemed their people had lost about 1,500 people without a single loss on the enemy side. At least, the necromancers hadn’t died.

She handed back the reports. ”Get the necromancers working immediately. We cannot let a single one of our dead get in the hands of the enemies.”

A few people nodded and moved.

Jema looked at Oleander who was still reading the report. She wanted to suggest that he should just give the same order as her, when she noticed a man walking toward them with full fury.

A small smile crept on her face. She nudged Oleander and had him turn around as well.

The Prince walked as if he was on his way to butcher a few people. His blue sword was already in his hand, his helm glowing a dull orange in the dark.

Jema lifted the coiled whip from her hip, clutching onto the red gem that dangled from the bracelet on her left hand.

Oleander moved, grabbing onto his red mace, while a necklace on his chest slowly activated at the same time.

”That’s quite the bit of hostility on your face, dear Prince,” Jema said. ”One might almost think you intend to attack us out here in the open.”

The prince stopped as he reached close. ”That would still make me more honorable than you two scums who decided to go behind my back.”

Jema shrugged. ”I do not know what you mean,” she said. ”We did no such thing at all.”

”You didn’t? Are you saying so many of my men died all on their own?” he asked, his sword raring to strike at them, but he held himself back.

His people finally arrived behind, they too realizing what had happened by now. They had been betrayed. There was no other reason why there was such a disparity between their death count.

The Prince stared at them for a while, trying to figure out what exactly was going on. He was a threat for the two, but taking him out still left the young girl. Not to mention, they had to fight each other.

”Do you think you two can trust each other anymore now that you’ve already taken the first step to betraying your comrade?” the Prince asked. ”Who will become the next Emperor? Which one will betray who?”

The two looked at him and then at each other before bursting into laughter.

”That’s where you are wrong, prince,” Oleander said. ”There is no reason for us to betray each other at all.”

Jema nodded. ”We don’t have to make a choice at all, since both of us are going to ascend the throne.”

The prince frowned. ”The both of you can’t become an Emperor at the same time. What are you two talking about?”

”Both of us won’t be the Emperor,” Oleander said. ”I will be the Emperor. And she will be my Empress.”

”We will rule this continent together, so there will be no reason for either of us to betray each other.”

The prince stared at the two with utter disbelief. He hated this. What he hated more was that their plan would absolutely work. Once the assassins got rid of the girl, he would be outnumbered two-to-one. After that, these two would become the next Emperor of the Onyx Empire.

The prince struggled to think of anything he could do in this situation. The only thing he could possibly do was kill them now. But with the two holding onto their artifacts and so many of their people around them, he couldn’t do anything at all.

Had he... lost?

Just then, a figure appeared from the dark, landing next to them. The prince’s sword moved, ready to kill the person, but he faltered over in the dark.

The prince’s eyes narrowed, recognizing the clothes. It was one of his own people.

He stood there while the others grabbed onto the man, making sure he was who they thought he was. As they brought him up, they saw a deep wound along the side of the man’s face.

”An assassin?” Jema asked with surprise. ”I swear, this isn’t—”

”He’s my man,” the prince said. ”Why did you come? What’s going on?”

The man took a moment to gather himself, as if just coming here had taken all of what he had remaining.

”Strong...” he said, the single word being all he could say at the moment.

”What?” the prince asked. ”Strong? Who is strong? The girl?”

”Strong. Everyone...”

The prince’s eyes narrowed, waiting for the man to speak.

”Everyone... failed.”

The prince sucked in a deep breath. ”What do you mean everyone failed? Do you mean to say you neither killed the girl nor their necromancers?” he asked.

The assassin did all he could to nod.

This was devastating news. Not only had their armies taken a massive loss, even their assassins had failed. Nothing changed for their enemies, but they had a much lower standing.

And since their enemies were already winning, the prince feared this was all for naught.

He turned toward the other two, seeing their pale faces. Each of them had begun to realize just how screwed they were.

”Idiots!” the prince shouted. ”You idiots! Look at what you did.”

Jema tried to say something, but the prince cut her off. ”You don’t do anything now. You have shown me all that you can do.”

”I will fix this all on my own. And when I fix this, I will be the Emperor.”
