Chapter 1729 1729: Not Forced

”Wait, you guys arenʼt serious, are you?” Mari asked. ”You canʼt just become an Emperor because you want to. Especially of a nation so torn in war for the past 30 years. When the republic happens to lose—”

”Which we donʼt know it will. We could always win,” Matthew said from the side.

”Okay, on the off chance that the republic happens to lose, it will immediately be filled with armies of the other two or three factions. You will have to go against those armies for this. Or what, do you think you can just sit on the throne and those armies will magically start following you? Think, kids. This is stupid.”

”It is,” Ning said. ”But if she wants it, it might be something fun.”

”Itʼs not fun!!” Matthew shouted. ”At best itʼs idiotic, and at worst itʼs downright suicidal. Youʼre just trying to get her killed.”

”No, she wonʼt die,” Ning said. ”I have my own ways of saving her in dangerous situations.”

”From an army?” Mari asked.

”Yes,” Ning said. ”Iʼm saying we can run away if need be. Besides, Iʼm only saying we try to place her on the throne and see what happens. Itʼs not like we are being forced to do so, right?”

[Quest - Make Shara an Empress

Shara wishes to ascend the Onyx throne. Find a way to make that possible.

”FUCK!” Ning cried out at once.

”Wh-wh-what?” Mari asked quickly, afraid.

Matthew perked up, his four arms ready to move should it need to.

Shara was already intangible at the moment, getting ready to turn someone else intangible if need be.

Ning quickly shook his head. ”No, everything is alright,” he said. ”I mean, everything is not alright, but… damn it!”

”Whatʼs wrong?” Shara asked.

”I have to make you an Empress now, whether itʼs possible or not,” Ning said.

”Have to?” Shara asked, confused.

Ning nodded. Shara thought for a moment. ”Is it…”

Ning nodded again.

”Oh!”

”Whatʼs going on?” Matthew asked.

”The situation has changed,” Ning said. ”I am now forced to make her an empress. Donʼt ask why.”

”This seems like the perfect time to ask why,” Matthew said.

”I know,” Ning said. ”But donʼt ask. I canʼt explain. Iʼm just forced to do so now.”

”Okay…” Matthew said.

”But you canʼt,” Mari said. ”Itʼs impossible.”

”Itʼs not impossible. I thought we established this,” Ning said. ”Anyway, forget about it. Itʼs my problem. You guys donʼt have to deal with it.”

”We werenʼt going to,” Mari said.

”Okay… so what now?” Matthew asked.

”Well, what did we come here to discuss initially?” Ning asked.

”About what we were going to do tomorrow,” Mari said. ”Where do we go? I think we should head over to the duchy.”

”No,” Ning said immediately. ”Too far away. And we donʼt have enough food to reach the duchy.”

”Then what do we do?” Mari asked.

”We go back to Toma,” Ning said.

”Back to where I just ran away from? There would be people waiting for me to be brought back. Or they will be checking every carriage to see if Iʼve sneaked in. I canʼt go back,” Mari said.

”Sheʼs right in a way,” Matthew said. ”We canʼt go back. The soldiers would be looking for us.”

”Do the soldiers know what you look like?” Ning asked Matthew.

”Uhh… no, not really. If it were the armies, they would know, but not these ones. They havenʼt seen our face.”

”So, if a group of soldiers leaves to capture her, and then a group returns with her captured, are they going to ask questions?” Ning asked.

”You want them to act like theyʼre soldiers of the empire?” Mari asked.

”They are soldiers of the old empire,” Ning said. ”They just need to fix their accent a little and it canʼt work surely. We have all the armor and necessary paperwork collected from the dead men today. It should be easy to claim we are who we say we are.”

”No,” Matthew said. ”Those soldiers would be recognized surely. At least the guards waiting for them would recognize weʼre not them.”

”Then?” Ning asked.

”We go in as the other group. I will be the Battalion commander of the Empire, and you will all be my soldiers,” Matthew said.

”And what about her? She is quite popular, so she will be recognized in the town,” Ning said.

”She can stay in the carriage. They wonʼt check who is inside the carriage. Especially once they see who we are.”

Ning thought for a moment. ”I see. That sounds like a better plan certainly. So do we leave tomorrow?” he asked.

”We do some cleanup tomorrow morning and then leave in the afternoon. We donʼt want people who come to immediately realize that there was a battle here. We need to get rid of as much evidence as we can.”

Ning nodded. ”That makes sense,” he said. ”So we are decided then. We will leave tomorrow.”

”It is decided,” Matthew said.

Ning turned to Mari. ”We can take you back to Lenes, but what after that?” he asked. ”Do you have somewhere to be? We could use your help.”

”And become a traitor to the empire?” Mari asked.

”It was the empire that betrayed you first, wasnʼt it?” Ning asked. ”They killed your family, took away everything you ever had. Do you still have any love for them?”

Mari thought for a moment and shook her head. ”No,” she said. ”You are right. I have nothing left for me in this empire. I… I can go anywhere I want to without a guilty conscience.”

”So…” Ning waited.

”Yes, Iʼll go with you.”

”Nice!” Ning said. ”Weʼll have 4 Spirit Awakeners in one group that way. It will be very helpful.”

”5,” Matthew said.

”Huh?” Ning asked. He quickly counted. ”Thereʼs only 4 here.”

”Romus, one of my men who was near death until earlier today, is a Necromancer. You might find that we will have a whole army ready before we leave for the city tomorrow.”
