Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Don’t Be Too Greedy

The team leader was also stunned by what Yunyi had said; he hadn’t expected this young girl to be so formidable.

On his way there, he had thought it through. Giving her six work points a day should be enough. Just considering she wouldn’t have to work in the fields anymore, she should be grateful and owe him a favor.

But now, with just a few words, this little girl had put him in a tough spot, making it clear that she wouldn’t agree to work for too few points.

Currently, there was no one else in the team capable of taking on the job. He really couldn’t afford to offend her too greatly.

Yet, this girl was too smart for her own good, even daring to challenge him. His expression cooled. ”Chu Zhiqing, one should not be too greedy.”

Yunyi smiled. ”Since I’m here to support the rural areas, I’m not picky about the kind of work I do. However, I don’t see anything wrong with exchanging labor for corresponding earnings.”

She was someone who never allowed herself to suffer a loss. Since he dared to threaten her, she might as well make her stance clear.

Worst comes to worst, she’d continue tilling the soil. She was perfectly capable of it; this team leader clearly took her for a fool.

Seeing the team leader’s stern face, not quite opening his mouth to speak, she said, ”Team Leader, I still have work to do in the fields. If there’s nothing else, I’ll go ahead and get to it.”

Without waiting for the team leader to respond, Yunyi turned around with her hoe and headed back to the soybean field.

She was someone who responded to soft approaches, not hard ones. For those she didn’t respect, she wasn’t willing to debase herself in the slightest. If he dared to play dirty tricks on her, he had better watch his own back.

Having dealt with people for lifetimes, just by the way the team leader and his wife looked at others, she knew the rumors spreading through the village were true. She didn’t want to have anything to do with such people, let alone owe them favors. They might be physically unattractive, but they certainly had beautiful delusions.

Team Leader Xu Wenchang was furious. During his years as team leader, no one had ever dared to show him such disrespect, especially not an educated youth from outside the village. ”Fine, very fine.”

He turned and walked toward the scorekeeper not far away. ”Dayan, these educated youths have come to the countryside to help build it, so they must set an example. The work in the fields can’t be taken lightly. When you inspect, you must be thorough and not betray the trust the team places in you.”

Xue Dayan was baffled, not quite understanding what the team leader was up to, but her mind was sharp. ”Don’t worry, Team Leader, I’ll definitely keep a close watch.”

「After the team leader left」

Geng Erhong came over. ”Yunyi, what did the team leader want with you?”

Yunyi stuck her hoe into the ground and didn’t hide anything. ”He just asked if I’d be willing to fill in at the village health clinic for a few days.”

Geng Erhong’s face lit up with joy immediately. ”Really? That would be great! Working at the health clinic is much more comfortable than in the fields.”

Yunyi deliberately raised her voice. ”It’s not decided yet. I might not even be able to go; after all, the village cadres haven’t agreed on it yet.”

She said this on purpose. Whether she went or not didn’t make much difference to her. But if the team leader wanted to scheme against her, she wasn’t going to let him have an easy time.

Their conversation was overheard by the people working nearby in the fields.

Before long, the women working in the adjacent field started to discuss it. ”Looks like the team plans to have the new educated youth, Chu Zhiqing, work at the health clinic.”

”It’s really inconvenient not having someone at the village health clinic. Just the other day, Xiaojun from my second uncle’s family got a fever in the middle of the night. The whole family was frantic, stumbling their way to the commune health center.”

”Who knows when Lin Fang will be back? If she’s much later, I’m afraid she’ll lose her position.”

”What are you saying? It’s not like the team isn’t letting her work at the clinic anymore. Didn’t Chu Zhiqing just say she’s filling in? Besides, knowing that only she and Doctor Gong were at the clinic, she still took so much time off. She’s really irresponsible.”
