Greatest Legacy of the Magus Universe

That same night, under the concealment of spells, Brigham Flynn covertly exited his manor and made his way toward the Herbalist’s Guild in Uptown Quarter.

It didn’t take him long before he arrived at his destination. However, instead of entering the building through the main entrance, he went towards the alley right adjacent to the building.

Suddenly, the side door opened, revealing an old man with white hair and beard. The most noticeable thing about him was his striking blue eyes as well as the insignia of a Grade 3 Herbalist on his robe.

This was none other than the leader of the Herbalist Guild’s branch in Ravenfell, the Rank 3 - Mana Vortex Magus, Halbert Dawson.

Seeing the man, Brigham cancelled his cloaking spell and greeted him, ”Lord Dawson, thank you for meeting me at such short notice.”

”Duke Flynn, is everything alright?” Halbert asked with a concerned look on his face.

When he received word from the Flynn Patriarch that he needed to see him for an extremely urgent matter, he couldn’t help but assume the worst.

Brigham stood before him and spoke in a serious tone, ”I fear that my life is in danger.”

”What?!” Halbert’s eyes narrowed, and he couldn’t help but look cautiously around the alleyway, wondering if the man had been followed.

”It’s not what you think.” Brigham spoke gravely, ”What I mean to say is, I fear that I might have been poisoned again.”

Halbert’s eyes turned bloodshot from rage. ”Is it those damned thieves again?! How dare they!”

He already blamed himself for not being around the Flynn Patriarch the last time the latter was poisoned and was nearly about to die.

Halbert later even found out that the reason he had even left the city at that time was because of the misdirection of none other than the Umbra Thieves.

As such, he truly despised this guild of thieves.

Brigham didn’t directly answer his question. Instead, he said, ”Lord Dawson, let us head to your office first.”

”Yes! Yes! Right away!” The old man hurriedly ushered him in before scanning the alleyway one more time and then locking the door.

…

Inside the Guild Leader’s office, Halbert Dawson performed a full body check up, going so far as to take Brigham Flynn’s blood and tissue samples.

Furthermore, he even checked every nook and cranny of the Flynn Patriarch’s internal systems with the help of his mana that he had honed for hundreds of years.

After almost an hour of diagnosis, Halbert glanced at Brigham with a light frown, ”Duke Flynn… There are no poisonous elements inside your body.”

”Are you sure?!” Brigham couldn’t help but ask with a dark expression.

Halbert Dawson was slightly offended by that remark. He couldn’t help but lean back in his chair and speak coolly, ”Duke Flynn, I am a Grade 3 Herbalist.”

Realizing his folly, Brigham’s expression turned apologetic, ”Forgive me, Lord Dawson, I… I’ve been quite on edge recently. I truly thought that I’d been poisoned by my enemies again.”

Halbert’s tone softened, ”I understand your concerns.”

He hesitated for a moment before speaking up, ”Although you aren’t poisoned, you aren’t entirely in your best shape either.”

Brigham’s brows creased into a knot before realization dawned on him. He couldn’t help but smile bitterly, ”Time waits for no man.” He paused for a moment before adding, ”How long do you think I have left?”

Halbert thought for a long time before answering, ”I’d say about a dozen years if I’m being optimistic. The prolonged exposure to the poison in your body consumed a lot from your lifespan.

”Honestly, it’s a surprise that you even have so many years remaining. I believe when Adam concocted that potion for you all those years ago, he not only cured you of your poison but also elevated your vitals and immunity.”

The Flynn Patriarch’s expression turned complicated. He couldn’t help but involuntarily clench his fists as he thought of the raven-haired youth.

But the next moment, he shook off such feelings. ”Lord Dawson, would you say Adam is a better Herbalist than you?” He asked.

The guild leader glanced at him with raised eyebrows, before falling into deep thought. ”Hmm, that is an interesting question.”

He paused for a few moments before answering, ”Well, I would say my skills in herbalism undoubtedly surpass his. But I have to admit, the child’s theoretical knowledge is quite deep.”

Brigham couldn’t help but be taken aback. He didn’t expect such high praises from the Grade 3 Herbalist himself!

”Deeper than you?” A foreboding feeling welled up in his heart.

Halbert was taken aback before he began chuckling, ”Of course not, Duke Flynn! Although the kid is talented, his knowledge possibly couldn’t surpass mine!”

Brigham secretly exhaled a breath of relief. He then conjured the wine gourd that Adam had gifted him earlier today, and passed it onto Halbert Dawson.

”I have one last thing to ask of you,” said Brigham with a serious tone. ”I would like you to see if this wine is poisoned.”

Halbert Dawson gazed at the wine gourd with furrowed brows. ”Duke Flynn, were you truly attacked by the Umbra Thieves again?”

”I’m afraid so,” Brigham lied.

Halbert grabbed the wine gourd, then poured some of the wine into a cup. After rigorous testing that involved several alchemical processes as well as ritual magic, he had finally finished testing.

He looked at Brigham and nodded with confidence, ”I am a hundred, no, a thousand percent confident that the wine does not contain any poison.”

”…How can this be?” Brigham muttered under his breath.

Did Adam truly not intend to kill me? When he swore on his mana, he was actually telling the truth?

For a brief moment, the old man was overcome by a slight sense of guilt. But he quickly resolved himself.

He glanced at the guild leader and smiled faintly, ”Forgive me for wasting your time, Lord Dawson. I’ve become too… paranoid in my old age, it seems.”

With that said, he conjured a bulging pouch of Acadian gold from his storage artifact and placed it on the table before him.

Halbert Dawson gazed at the pouch for a moment before smiling, ”I can understand your worries, Duke Flynn.”

He got to his feet and led him to the side exit of the building, ”If you ever need any medical help, do not hesitate to directly contact me.”

Brigham nodded at the man before casting his concealment spells and making his way back toward his manor.

His expression was indifferent and his mind cold and calculating, I have less than a dozen years left.

That should be enough to set several arrangements in place. By that time, Elysande will have also become a Mana Vortex Magus with the help of my mana extraction technique.

When he thought of his mana extaction technique, his heart turned cold.

That is the single biggest secret of the Flynn Family…

And must remain within the Flynn Family!
