Greatest Legacy of the Magus Universe

Chapter 1947 Just A Theory

”Anything?”

Inside the secured room of a dilapidated building, Leah and the party gathered and had dinner.

There was no crackling fire, as they did not want to draw unwanted attention. Shadowy figures still roamed outside the building, some calling out to them, while others knocked on the doors and windows.

The talisman hanging on the wall silently warded off the evil.

In response to Leahʼs questions, everyone shook their heads. And she couldnʼt help but sigh. Although she had expected this outcome, it was still disappointing. They had traveled so far, and yet they were going to return with nothing.

A cold chill swept through the room. Add to that the constant whispers and knocks coming from outside, and the atmosphere was very eerie and foreboding.

Michael couldnʼt help but shiver a little. Whether it was from the cold or the fright, he did not know. He looked around the room. Genevieve sat beside him, the two elves sat together in one corner, and Leah sat alone on the opposite end.

”Donʼt we have a Diviner at the City Hall?” he said, forcing a chuckle. ”Iʼm sure they would have the answers without even stepping out of their rooms.”

His attempt to lighten the mood in the room was met with sneers from the elves. He disliked the elves.

”We donʼt have any Diviners,” Leah said.

”Huh.” Michael couldnʼt help but let out a scoff. ”Maybe they deemed the secret plane too dangerous and never entered.”

Genevieve, however, was in no mood for jests. A light frown rested on her face as she said, ”None at all?”

”Nope.” Leah shook her head. ”Diviners are rare, to begin with. There were some who entered the secret plane in the past. Most never made it out of the Lands of Always War. And the ones who did… Well, they all died.”

Genevieveʼs frown deepened. ”Donʼt you find that strange?”

”It is.” Leah nodded. ”But so is every other thing in this cursed place.”

”Diviners are quite weak,” one of the elves chimed in. ”Thatʼs why they didnʼt survive.”

”Or maybe something here doesnʼt want Diviners to live,” said the other, his voice barely a whisper.

Genevieveʼs eyes narrowed. She turned to the elf pressed for more answers. ”What do you mean?”

”Donʼt listen to him.” The first elf waved his hand dismissively. ”Heʼs always talking rubbish!”

Genevieve ignored him. She kept staring at the second elf. ”Dell, why did you say that?” she asked.

The second elf, Dell, hesitated for a moment. He subconsciously glanced at his fellow elf, who rolled his eyes at him, then turned back to Genevieve before answering:

”What if… what if this place or whoever controls this place does not want us to leave? What if it knows that Diviners might be able to unearth clues to leaving this place, and thatʼs why it quietly dealt with them?”

”Oh, shut up! Will ya?” The first elf couldnʼt help but complain, his voice subconsciously rising.

”Theyʼre fuckinʼ weak! Thatʼs why they died! Magi are weak in general, Dell. Take away their magical components and artifacts, what do they have? Nothing! And Diviners and Echanters are the weakest of the bunch. So quit your—”

KNOCK! KNOCK!

KNOCK! KNOCK!

Everyone turned toward the source of the sound.

The door.

KNOCK! KNOCK!

KNOCK! KNOCK!

The sound was loud. Too loud.

Michael quickly rose to his feet, his hand shooting for the sword fastened to his waist. Meanwhile, the twins retreated from the door in haste. Genevieve had also activated her artifacts.

Only Leah remained calm. Well, comparatively.

The knocking persisted for a few more seconds before the creature at the door moved away. Through the window, it appeared as a shadowy silhouette. Humanoid with the head of a… goat. Or it looked like a goat. It was hard to tell.

After the creature left, there was silence for a few long moments before other creatures arrived. Their whispers began resumed once again.

Leah finally turned to the first elf and coldly said, ”Couldnʼt you speak any louder?”

The elf subconsciously gulped before lowering his head in shame, or perhaps fear.

”Sorry, capʼn,” he murmured. ”It wonʼt happen again.”

Leah scoffed in displeasure, but threw the matter aside.

Michael let out a shaky breath. ”I really thought it would enter the building!”

He sat back down, but his hand didnʼt leave the swordʼs hilt.

Genevieve stared at the door for a long time, silently reciting the invocation in her mind.

I acknowledge my fear.

I give it no command over me.

It is a guest within my heart.

Not the master of my will.

Eventually, she found her heartbeat slow down, and the fear flooding her veins gradually dispersed.

Her gaze shifted from the talisman to the door several times before she turned to Leah and said in a solemn voice:

”When that creature appeared, the others who were knocking earlier and calling out to us quickly retreated. Do you think that… that creature was a Rank 2 monster?”

Leah frowned. But quickly shook her head. ”Itʼs highly unlikely.”

”But there is still a chance, yes?” Genevieve couldnʼt help but say. ”What if the recent battle between the High Priest and the Puppeteer drew powerful monsters from beyond the walls? Could that be a possibility?”

Leah slipped into silence. ”It could be…” she murmured.

Her gaze unknowingly drifted to the talisman hanging on the wall. ”But no matter how powerful, they cannot enter with that protecting us.”

Genevieve wanted to speak more about it, but thought it would not be helpful to the teamʼs morale. Hence, she wisely didnʼt press for more.

”I see.” She nodded.

She then turned to Dell and spoke to him in a hushed voice, ”What were you saying earlier?”

Dell hesitated. He glanced at the other elf and noticed him roll his eyes at him again. Shaking his head, he turned back to Genevieve and explained:

”Well, itʼs just a theory. But I think this place got rid of all the Diviners who ever entered this secret plane because it knew they had the highest chances of finding a way out. Or something like that, I think.”

Leah did not reject the idea outright.

Among the adventurers, there were many theories as to why there were no Diviners around. The most common belief was that they died because of their lack of combat ability.

But that explanation never fully made sense.

There were plenty of adventurers weaker than Diviners, such as Squires and Apprentices.

So why had they survived while the Diviners had not?
