Dakota turned to face Amir, her body trembling as she said, “I will prepare him.”

Amir stopped mid-step, his dark aura momentarily calming as if acknowledging her words.

She knelt beside Harith, her hands moving to his garments. Her fingers trembled as she began undressing him.

Harith’s eyes met hers, confusion and fear etched deeply into his young face.

“Harith,” Dakota said softly, her voice quivering but filled with a strange tenderness. “Do you love your little brother?”

At the mention of Hanu, Harith’s expression softened, and a faint smile appeared on his lips.

“Yes, Mother,” he replied, his voice proud and sincere. “I want Hanu to grow big and be the patriarch of the tribe.”

Tears welled up in Dakota’s eyes, spilling down her cheeks as her grip on his clothing loosened. Her voice cracked as she asked, “Do you not want to be the patriarch yourself, my son?”

Harith shook his head, the faint smile still lingering. “No, Mother,” he said earnestly. “Hanu is brighter than me. He is more talented than me. I don’t want my blood to be superior to his gift.”

Dakota’s tears fell harder. Harith’s selflessness and innocence only deepened the weight of the moment, and Julian, watching from the shadows, felt an unsettling mixture of admiration and curiosity.

What was this ritual that required such a sacrifice from one so pure-hearted? And why did Dakota’s despair seem to grow with every word her son spoke?

“Dakota, time is running out,” Amir said, his voice sharp and cold, breaking the moment that the mother and son were sharing.

Dakota flinched, his words cutting through her resolve like a blade. She took a deep breath and steeled herself before continuing to undo Harith’s dress.

Harith could notice the defeat in his mother’s eyes, and he chose to remain silent. He knew better than to cause her more grief.

Once Harith was undressed, Dakota whispered, “Go sit inside the circle.”

Harith nodded solemnly and stepped into the white circle on the raised platform. As soon as his foot touched its boundary, the platform surged with an overwhelming and terrifying aura.

Julian’s eyes widened in shock, and every hair on his body stood on end. The sheer intensity of the aura disrupted his invisibility cloak for a brief moment, exposing him.

In that instant, all the villagers turned their heads in unison, their eyes locking onto the source of the disturbance.

A chilling silence fell over the space, and Amir’s glowing eyes narrowed. “Who is there?” he shouted, his voice echoing through the cavern with fury.

Julian reacted quickly and called, “Domain of Isolation.”

A wave of mana surged around him, wrapping him in a protective sphere and making him undetectable once more.

He took a deep breath, his heart beating steady as he whispered to himself, “Even my invisibility cloak is useless before this energy. What is this ritual even about?”

Amir’s eyes scanned the area, his aura flaring with suspicion, but after a tense moment, he returned his focus back to the ritual.

The villagers stood slowly, their eerily synchronized, and began chanting prayers—different from before, this time more forceful. The words echoed through the cavern, the sound almost flowing like a wave.

As the prayers continued, the oppressive aura began to change. It began moving with a calm and steady rhythm, no longer chaotic as before.

Julian could feel something strange unfolding. The now calm aura suddenly began to dissipate into nothingness. He concentrated deeply, focusing on the path of the aura.

His eyes widened in realization. The aura wasn’t dissipating, but rather it was being drawn toward Amir. But more than Amir, the dark silhouette clinging to him was the true receiver.

The shadowy figure glowed and pulsed as it absorbed the aura, its form growing more defined with every passing moment.

The villagers seemed to simply ignore the dark entity. Their focus remained solely on Amir, their eyes glazed with devotion as they continued their chanting.

The silhouette grew stronger with every pulse of energy, the dark aura now thick enough to influence the air around it.

Amir trembled as his body struggled to keep up with the growing weight of the force.

“What… is he becoming?” Julian thought, the question echoing in his mind as the ritual took a turn he hadn’t anticipated.

Harith watched the scene unfold, oblivious to the true nature of what was happening around him. Meanwhile, Dakota stood beside Amir, her expression unreadable as she watched the ritual proceed.

Amir stepped forward, his presence commanding as he raised his hands to the air.

“Este wretche yuich dekh poji silawa!” he shouted, the words foreign and incomprehensible to Julian.

The moment Amir spoke, the air in the cavern thickened. A sudden chill swept over Julian as a strange, almost visible force rippled through the space. The villagers suddenly began to weep—loud, mournful cries that felt unnatural and haunting. Their tears fell in unison, soaking the ground beneath as if haunted by unseen torment.

Then, as if they all had lost their minds, the villagers all dropped to their knees, their faces touching the floor. They pounded their heads against the ground in what seemed like a desperate plea, muttering words in a language Julian couldn’t understand.

Despite the unfamiliarity, Julian could easily notice the tone of their voice; it was the plea for mercy.

Julian’s heart pounded faster in his chest. “Why… why are they doing this?” he thought, the question eating at him as the darkness in the cavern deepened.

Amir slowly lowered his hands, his voice echoing with the same commanding authority as before. “Drtech yis wal din khi su.”

The effect was immediate. The villagers, who moments ago had been consumed by grief, suddenly stood, their faces eerily calm. They wiped their tears with an unnatural composure, as though the raw anguish they had displayed moments earlier had never existed.

Julian’s unease deepened as Amir took a step forward, his voice ringing out again, “Algos.”

The cavern erupted into chaos. The villagers began clawing at their chests, their nails digging over their painted skin with an animalistic intensity. Their cries of pain filled the cavern.

Julian winced, his own chest tightening as he watched the horrifying scene unfold, the villagers tearing at their own flesh as if compelled by some unseen force.

Then Amir spoke again. “Lagneia.”

The villagers’ cries abruptly stopped, replaced by a chilling silence. Slowly, the women began to move, their hands rising to cup their breasts, fingers playing with their nipples.

Their expressions were detached as if their actions weren’t their own. The men followed suit, their hands moving to their genitals, stroking with practiced rhythm.

Julian’s stomach churned as the scene unfolded before him, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing.

Amir’s voice rang out for the third time, “Pharmakos.”

As if on command, every villager’s gaze snapped to Harith. Their eyes glowed with a sharp, predatory intensity. The boy stood frozen, his frame trembling under the weight of their collective stare.
