Tech Giants: Starting from Bankrupt Companies

366: Chapter 366 Star Charity FoundationThe sky was as clear as if it had been washed. Today marked the largest charitable event since the founding of Xingchen.

Inside the press hall at the Xingchen Technology Group headquarters, large golden characters on a red background wall read: ”Xingchen Charity Foundation Inauguration Press Conference.”

Below the stage, over three hundred journalists were already seated. Long lenses and flashes were aimed at the podium, and the red lights of cameras flickered incessantly. There were also representatives from public welfare organizations and subsidized regions from all over the country; anticipation was written on everyone’s face.

Su Chen walked onto the podium. Today, he wore a dark gray shirt and black trousers, with his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Behind him was a giant electronic screen, which at this moment displayed only one number: ¥20,000,000,000.

Twenty billion.

Someone in the audience gasped. Su Chen stood still, his gaze sweeping across the room.

”Today, Xingchen Technology Group announces the establishment of the ’Xingchen Charity Foundation.’ The initial capital injection is twenty billion rmb.”

As soon as he finished speaking, a tsunami of camera flashes erupted. Click, click, click—the sound of shutters was as dense as machine-gun fire.

Su Chen gestured, and the large screen switched to: The Three Pillars of the Xingchen Charity Foundation.

Education: Assist in building 1,000 ’Xingchen Primary Schools’ in 100 impoverished counties and provide financial aid to 100,000 underprivileged students.

Healthcare: Assist in building 200 ’Xingchen Clinics’ in 200 impoverished counties and train 5,000 rural doctors.

Rural Revitalization: Support 1,000 impoverished villages in developing characteristic industries to lift 100,000 people out of poverty.

Su Chen continued, ”This twenty billion is not a one-time donation, but the foundation’s startup capital. Over the next five years, Xingchen will also contribute no less than one percent of its annual profits each year.”

He paused. ”Xingchen could not have reached where it is today without this country and this era. Twenty billion is Xingchen’s way of giving back.”

The audience erupted into thunderous applause that lasted for a long time.

A reporter raised their hand. ”President Su, twenty billion is equivalent to one-tenth of China’s total charitable donations last year. How will you ensure this money is put to practical use?”

Su Chen nodded. ”Good question. The Xingchen Charity Foundation will be managed by an independent board of directors, including experts from the fields of education, medicine, and public welfare. Every expenditure will be open and transparent, subject to social supervision.”

Another reporter raised their hand. ”President Su, why choose these three directions: education, healthcare, and rural revitalization?”

Su Chen looked at him and said seriously, ”Because I have seen it. I have seen children in the mountains walking two hours on mountain roads just to get to school. I have seen elderly villagers dragging out minor illnesses until they become severe because they couldn’t afford treatment. I have seen young people in impoverished areas forced to leave for work, leaving behind only the elderly and children.”

He paused. ”Xingchen’s technology cannot change these things. But Xingchen is willing to spend money and time to change this reality.”

That same afternoon, in Bijie, Guizhou.

The mountains stretched endlessly, shrouded in mist. A winding mountain road led deep into the range, and at the end of the road was a dilapidated village primary school. The school consisted of only three tile-roofed rooms: one classroom, one office, and one teacher’s dormitory. The classroom windows had no glass and were blocked with plastic sheets. The desks were old-fashioned wooden ones from decades ago, their surfaces pitted and uneven. Principal Teacher Zhang stood at the school gate, watching the dust on the distant mountain road. The fifty-five-year-old Teacher Zhang had taught at this school for thirty years; his hair was already gray, and his face was etched with the marks of wind and frost. He was the only teacher here, teaching Chinese, Mathematics, PE—he taught everything.

Several off-road vehicles slowly drove into the school. The doors opened, and Xingchen volunteer Wang Lei stepped out with several colleagues. Thirty-year-old Wang Lei was a Xingchen employee who had volunteered for this activity. They began unloading dozens of boxes from the vehicles.

Teacher Zhang went to meet them, looking a bit lost. ”Who are you?”

Wang Lei shook his hand firmly. ”Principal Zhang, we are from the Xingchen Charity Foundation. This is the first batch of supplies—fifty tablets, five hundred books, and twenty desktop computers.”

Teacher Zhang was stunned. Children ran out of the classroom, surrounding the boxes curiously. They wore school uniforms that had faded from many washes, their faces were rosy, and their eyes were full of wonder.

A little girl with a ponytail squeezed to the front and asked timidly, ”Uncle, can this go online to see the outside world?”

Her name was Xiao Fang, ten years old and in the fourth grade. The furthest she had ever been was the town center; she had never seen the world beyond the mountains. Wang Lei crouched down, turned on a tablet, and pulled up a video. The video showed the Shenzhen skyline. The Ping An Finance Center towered into the clouds, the Shenzhen Bay Bridge snaked into the sea, traffic flowed like a river, and neon lights flickered.

Xiao Fang’s eyes lit up. ”So beautiful!”

Wang Lei patted her head. ”When you grow up, you can go there and see for yourself.”

Xiao Fang nodded vigorously. ”Mhm! I’m going to study hard so I can test into a school out there in the future!”

Nearby, several boys were chattering around a computer.

”Is this a computer?” ”It’s even bigger than the TV at my house!” ”Can you play games on it?”

Watching this scene, Teacher Zhang’s eyes grew slightly red.

He said to Wang Lei, ”I’ve taught here for thirty years, and my biggest wish has always been for the children to leave these mountains. Now that they have computers and tablets, they can learn so much more.”

Wang Lei patted his shoulder. ”Teacher Zhang, the Xingchen Foundation is also going to build a new primary school in your village. By this time next year, the children will be able to have classes in spacious, bright classrooms.”

Teacher Zhang’s tears finally fell.

The next day, deep in the Liangshan Mountains of Sichuan. This place was even more remote than Guizhou, and the mountain roads were even more rugged. The off-road vehicles couldn’t make it in, so the volunteers had to hike into the village. This was a settlement of the Yi ethnic group, with dozens of households scattered across the hillside. The houses were made of adobe with tiled roofs, some of which were already leaking.

At the village entrance, the villagers were already waiting. Dr. Li, the leader of the Xingchen medical team, walked at the front. The forty-five-year-old surgeon had worked in Shenzhen for twenty years and was visiting such a remote area for the first time. They set up simple tents, laid out medical equipment, and began the free clinic.

An elderly Yi grandmother was helped over by her son. She wore traditional Yi clothing, her face was covered in wrinkles, and her eyes were cloudy. The translator asked a few questions in the Yi language and then said to Dr. Li, ”She’s had stomach pain for three years and has just been enduring it. There’s no doctor in the village, and it takes a day and a night to get to the county seat.”

Dr. Li had her sit down and began the examination. Palpation, auscultation, consultation.

Ten minutes later, he said to the translator, ”It might be a gastric ulcer; she needs further examination. I’ll prescribe some medicine first to relieve the symptoms. Later, we need to take her to the county seat for a gastroscopy.”

The son, A Mu, listened to the translator’s words, and his eyes reddened. Thirty-five-year-old A Mu was the pillar of the family, usually farming and herding sheep to barely make ends meet. His mother had been sick for three years; he had saved some money to take her to the county seat, but it was never enough.

He said to Dr. Li, ”My mother has been sick for three years, and we didn’t have the money to go to the county seat for treatment. Thank you for coming.”

Dr. Li patted his shoulder. ”You won’t have to worry anymore. The Xingchen Foundation is going to build a clinic in your village, and there will be a permanent doctor. When that time comes, your mother won’t have to travel so far for medical care.”

A Mu was stunned. ”Really?”

Dr. Li nodded. ”Really.”

A Mu suddenly knelt down.

Dr. Li was startled and quickly helped him up. ”Don’t do that, please get up!”

A Mu wouldn’t get up, saying something in the Yi language. The translator nearby said softly, ”He says thank you. His mother can be saved now.”

Dr. Li’s eyes also grew red.

At 8:00 PM, on the Weibo trending list.

”It’s not just that kind of handsome; it’s the ’I’m rich but I have a conscience’ kind of handsome.”

”Xingchen employee passing through. The company sent a notification in our group, and everyone was very moved.”

Zhihu Trending Question: ”How do you evaluate the twenty billion donation from the Xingchen Charity Foundation?”

The top-voted answer came from a user verified as a ”Public Welfare Industry Practitioner”:

”This isn’t a show; this is giving back with real gold and silver. The four companies in the Xingchen ecosystem have a market value of twenty trillion; putting up twenty billion for charity is like someone worth ten million putting up ten thousand. The proportion isn’t high, but the absolute amount is staggering.”

”More importantly, the directions they chose—education, healthcare, rural revitalization—are all places that truly need money. It’s not about building some luxury skyscraper or a vanity project; it’s about the tangible construction of schools, clinics, and industrial support.”

”I’ve worked in the public welfare industry for ten years and have seen too many companies donate money just for tax deductions, for reputation, or to appease higher-ups. But with Xingchen’s plan, you can tell they’ve truly done their research and really want to solve problems.”

”One hundred primary schools, two hundred clinics, one thousand impoverished villages, one hundred thousand students, one hundred thousand people lifted out of poverty. With these numbers, in five years, how many children will get into university, how many elderly will receive treatment, and how many families will escape poverty?”

”This is true charity.”

Everything was proceeding in an orderly fashion. Lin Wan pushed open the door to report, ”President Su, Weibo, Douyin, and Zhihu have all exploded. Netizens are full of praise.”

Su Chen did not turn around.

”We need the people of this country to know that Xingchen companies don’t just know how to make money; they also help more people. We cannot change the world, but we can change the fates of some individuals.”

Lin Wan nodded.

Su Chen turned around. ”Education, healthcare, rural revitalization—these three things cannot be solved by twenty billion alone. The state has invested so much money and still hasn’t completely solved them. Twenty billion is just the beginning.”

He walked back to the window. ”But someone has to do it. Someone has to take the first step.”

Outside the window, the lights of Shenzhen extended to the horizon. In the distance were the directions of Guizhou and the Liangshan Mountains. The children there might be using tablets to see the outside world tonight. The elderly there might finally be getting a peaceful night’s sleep.
