Chapter 954: Finished Compound

Kaiden crossed the gravel to where the disaster on four legs held his post, and not one of the six amber eyes came off the fence line for a single step of his approach.

He stopped beside the nearest foreleg, which put his shoulder somewhere around the height of Pebble’s dewclaw, and followed the stare out to the same forty meters of dark he had already given up on from the tent door.

Nothing moved out there. He gave it a full minute of honest attention, and the night gave him back nothing at all.

”What do you see?”

One ear rotated toward him, acknowledging the question without spending a single eye on it. The staggered crown stayed exactly where it was, all six points of banked amber fixed on one patch of darkness that looked like every other patch of darkness, and the huge body under the stone plates did not so much as breathe wrong.

Pebble had spent his days on the compound sorting the world into threats and weirdness, and he had never once held anything this long. Scarlet falling out of the sky had been assessed and dismissed inside a few seconds. Whatever sat in that treeline was still being assessed.

Then, somewhere between one second and the next, it ended. The six eyes lifted off the treeline together, redistributed themselves across the perimeter, and went back to their slow, watchful arcs as if the past several minutes had never happened.

There was no bark and no growl, and Kaiden decided he would have preferred one of each.

’A guardian that used to eat dungeons doesn’t spook at raccoons.’

He reached up and put his palm flat against the cold stone of Pebble’s foreleg. ”Stay watchful for me, will you?”

The nearest eye rolled down to him, amber and patient, and an exhale big enough to stir the gravel answered on behalf of the other five.

He doubled the night patrols on his way back inside anyway.

...

The scaffolding came down the next morning, floor by floor, and it was gone before anyone had finished a coffee.

Vespera’s expedited process had been running long enough that everyone had stopped noticing it, and what it had been doing through every night shift the compound slept through was finishing a headquarters. By noon, three stories of dark glass and pale stone rose over the gravel lot, with nothing left of the work but detail crews and the finishing touches that happen behind closed doors.

Four hundred people found reasons to walk past the front of it slowly.

The tent stayed where it was. Nobody was ready to say anything about the tent yet.

They walked the ops floor together before the detail crews had cleared the stairwells, family and staff both, through a war room with a glass wall facing the lot and enough desk space to run a small government.

Calypso carried the map table up from the tent one-handed and held it there, dead center under the main light, while she defended her choice of angle against three separate objections on the grounds that she was the one holding it. The battered folding legs looked absurd surrounded by all that new glass. Nobody suggested replacing it.

Nyx claimed the desk with the cleanest sightline to every door, and the first thing she hung on the wall behind it was the routing sheet from the inspection, framed, annotations and all.

”That’s a trophy of you losing,” Luna grinned.

”Yeah,” Nyx said, pleased with herself. ”It’s good motivation, gremlin bestie.”

”That’s certainly one way to spin a participation award, Fatty.”

”Someone’s very hissy today as well. Should I read the schedule out and see whose night it was?”

Luna stopped walking where she stood, and the mortification got to her face faster than any thought she had about it.

”Yours is on the same page, cow.”

Nyx, however, did not pause. ”When I catch the man who bought my receipts, I’m going to make him sign my ’participation award.’” Nyx straightened the frame by a degree only she could see.

Bastet had appointed herself director of furniture, and the movers stopped arguing with her within the hour, because every placement she dictated turned out to be correct in ways they could not name and could not beat. The gold on her ankles chimed with each unhurried step, and grown men carrying couches followed the sound like it was payroll.

The rest of the family spread through the building at their own speeds, and for a while the new halls were all footsteps, doors, and Luna’s voice carrying from somewhere it had no business reaching.

Doug stopped in the doorway of his corner office and did not go in.

He took his glasses off, put them back on, and looked at the desk, the window, and the wall of cabinets somebody had already labeled to his published specifications.

The man who had run the founding of the continent’s most dangerous guild off a folding table had a doorway now, with a door in it, and a nameplate in a font he had not been consulted on and approved of anyway.

”I have a door,” he informed the hallway. ”I intend to close it several times today for no reason whatsoever.”

He was working before the movers cleared the floor, standing, coat still on.

Ms. Rook’s office, one down from his, contained precisely what she had carried in and nothing else. She set her tablet on the desk, squared its edge to the desk’s edge, and surveyed the empty shelves the way other people surveyed completed inventories.

”Adequate,” she ruled, and began.

The guild leader’s office sat on the third floor with a window running the length of one wall, and Kaiden stood in the middle of it, wearing the room like somebody else’s coat.

His desk could have seated six. The chair behind it had cost more than his first month of streaming had earned, according to Doug, who had approved the expense personally and would defend it with his life. Out the window sat the whole south lot, the crater Scarlet had gifted them, and the training lanes beyond it.

He went back down two flights and came up again carrying the folding chair from the tent.

It was gray, it was scratched, and one foot had been bent since the night Calypso sat on it wrong. He parked it in the corner by the window where it could watch him work. First chair Eclipse had ever owned. Some things just had to be kept as a memento.

...

Across the lot, the dorm wings filled for the first time in a single afternoon.

Up to now the four hundred had been split between the trailer camp and a commute long enough to eat the hours they should have been spending getting ready for dungeons, because nobody in the family had been willing to make a hire sleep in canvas.

Now there were beds, and anyone who wanted their own could still drive in.

But what mattered was that the guild was finally in a presentable state, evidenced by the sounds coming through the new windows for the rest of the day: grown combat professionals shouting in joy about a usable bathroom on site. Somebody’s speaker auditioned three different party playlists before dinner. A B-tier was seen weeping openly at a mattress.

Brittany and Trisha had been assigned private rooms, of course, being A-tiers and hardly newcomers besides, having joined before the recruitment wave. The rooms faced each other across the same hall.

They checked the rooming list for the error and found none, because Ms. Rook did not make errors.

Both filed complaints within the hour, handwritten, historically consistent. Both complaints came back stamped before dinner with the same typed note: Assignments final.

At the north corner where the scaffolding had stood, the construction crews left behind one item that appeared on no blueprint anyone could produce.

A cantilevered concrete canopy jutted off the building’s flank, poured sometime during the night shifts, high and deep enough to roof a creature the size of a building.

The change order behind it carried a signature nobody could read, and the foreman denied all knowledge of it in a tone that gave away exactly how closely he had supervised the pour.

By sundown Pebble was settled beneath the first load-bearing doghouse in guild history, six eyes sweeping the perimeter from under his own roof.

The tenant approved.

...

By evening the building had taken everything except the tent.
