Chapter 2654: Drill

When Sergeant Bing saw the frown on Yuan’s face, she chuckled and said, ”Are you worried about fighting for years without rest? Don’t worry, there will be breaks here and there.”

Yuan shook his head and said, ”It’s not the fighting that worries me. I don’t want the drill to be that long, period.”

Since he wouldn’t be able to train during the drill, his progress would essentially come to a standstill until it ended, which was far from ideal.

”I wouldn’t worry about that too much,” Sergeant Quang suddenly said. ”Although there were instances where a drill lasted for years, that only happened in the early days, when the system was still new, and nobody really knew what they were doing. Nowadays, drills usually last only a few weeks at most.”

Yuan recalled the last drill and said, ”Now that I think about it, the last drill ended quite fast.”

”Oh, that was a special occasion. The drill had to be canceled for some reason,” revealed Sergeant Bing.

”Is that so?”

”Anyway, I am going to prepare for the drill,” said Sergeant Quang.

”How does one prepare for the drill?” Mei Xiaoyun asked.

”By doing nothing,” replied Sergeant Bing. ”Everyone who isn’t out on a mission is prohibited from accepting new missions until it ends, and since the drill could happen at any moment, I also wouldn’t waste my energy training, so just rest until then.”

”Speaking of those who are still out on missions... what happens to them? Do they just get to skip the drill?” Yuan asked curiously.

”That rarely happens. Drills are announced months in advance, so everyone knows when to stop accepting missions and return to the city before it begins. But yes, if there is an emergency mission that cannot be delayed, those soldiers get to skip drill.”

Some time later, Yuan and the others left the Parade Deck and returned to their living quarters.

Since there was no telling exactly when the drill would begin—or when they might suddenly be teleported to their assigned positions—most soldiers spent the next several days resting in their rooms. Others passed the time chatting, eating in the cafeteria, or spending time with friends.

As for Yuan, he spent his time studying the Limitless Cultivation Technique.

Six days later, the moment the clock struck three in the afternoon, sirens began blaring throughout the city.

The instant the civilians heard them, they rushed toward the teleporters, evacuating to the underground city.

Meanwhile, every soldier immediately stopped whatever they were doing and prepared to be teleported to their assigned positions.

Yuan opened his eyes to see a notification before him.

Sixty seconds later, Yuan was teleported directly from his room to Sector 7.

Once the teleportation was complete, he looked around and found himself standing atop a rooftop somewhere within the sector. Other soldiers were stationed throughout the surrounding area, though none were close enough for a conversation, as they were about three miles away from each other.

He couldn’t see Mei Xiaoyun or the others nearby, so he assumed they were assigned to a different sector.

”So this won’t be a team-based event, huh?” Yuan mumbled as he looked toward the sky.

The once-clear blue sky was rapidly darkening, as though a massive storm were closing in from all directions.

A few minutes later, cracks suddenly began appearing across the pitch-black sky, as though countless spears had pierced through it from the other side.

Then, silhouettes emerged from the openings, slowly descending toward the world below.

The moment they appeared, the atmosphere throughout the entire city shifted. An indescribable pressure descended with them, blanketing everything beneath the darkened sky.

Yuan narrowed his eyes at the descending silhouettes. They had humanoid figures and ghostly pale skin, with a pair of large, bat-like wings flapping behind their backs. Their faces also resembled humans, yet their expressions remained eerily blank, making them seem like soulless beings devoid of emotion.

As for their cultivation levels, they varied greatly, ranging from the Third Ascension all the way to the Seventh Ascension.

Ding!

Shortly after their appearance, the Celestial Beings made the first move, unleashing a barrage of Limitless that rained down upon the soldiers like a violent storm.

The soldiers responded by shielding themselves with Limitless. Some avoided them entirely with Void Control.

”This is... quite boring,” Yuan muttered as he counterattacked with his own Limitless, firing at the Celestial Beings still descending from the sky.

The moment his Limitless collided with theirs, the enemy attacks shattered with no resistance. Yuan’s attack then continued forward and struck one of the Celestial Beings, killing it instantly.

After defeating the Celestial Being that had been targeting him, Yuan turned his attention toward the others.

At a glance, it seemed that each soldier had been assigned a single Celestial Being to deal with.

A few minutes later, Yuan lifted his head toward the sky when he noticed more Celestial Beings were appearing.

”Two of them this time, huh?” Yuan mumbled to himself as he gazed at the two Celestial Beings that appeared side by side.

A burst of Limitless surged from Yuan’s body before he unleashed a barrage of Limitless bullets at the Celestial Beings, destroying them before they could even attack.

”>

”>

Meanwhile, the others were still on their first Celestial Being.

As boring as the drill seemed at first, Yuan didn’t complain, as he could tell that the difficulty would gradually increase.

’Hm? Wait a second. Am I only allowed to attack the Celestial Beings targeting me, or can I help the others?’ Yuan suddenly wondered.

After pondering for a moment, he decided to test it himself. Without leaving his assigned position, Yuan launched an attack at a Celestial Being already engaged in combat with another soldier.

Upon confirming that he could assist the others, Yuan felt a strong urge to defeat every Celestial Being in the area by himself. However, he ultimately restrained himself.

’This is a drill, after all. I should let the others get some experience. I’ll only step in if things start getting out of hand,’ he thought before he waited for more Celestial Beings to show up.
