I Level Up By Making Enemies

She started walking. Lin Feng fell into position beside her as the shelter disappeared behind them. The relative stability of Yu Mei’s territory faded within minutes. The more watchful pressure of the active middle layers closed around them.

Yu Mei chose lines of travel he would have overlooked. Where Lin Feng had previously moved like someone constantly ready to fight or flee, she avoided attention. After a while she spoke without turning her head.

”You carry residual hostility like a torch. You need to tighten your circulation. Keep the edge if you need it for your method, but stop letting it loose always.”

Lin Feng adjusted as best he could. The difference was small but noticeable. He noticed a few of the more distant shifts in the mist lost interest and drifting away.

They walked for most of the morning with Yu Mei occasionally pointing out markers or explaining short, practical details as they moved. She gave information once clearly, and expected him to retain it.

Near midday she changed direction and led them toward a slightly elevated platform of interlocked black roots surrounded by deeper water on three sides.

”This is the first objective,” she said quietly, stopping at the edge. ”A contested node. The previous owner was cleared out by something else a few days ago. The residual field is still strong, and a scavenger has started testing the edges. It is string but not strong enough to kill you instantly if you are careful.”

Lin Feng studied the platform. He could feel the leftover anger saturating the roots.

”What’s the scavenger?”

”An armored marsh stalker. It is territorial but not intelligent enough to be truly dangerous if you don’t let it drag you into the water. Generate enough hostility, clear it, then cultivate in the residual field before it disperses. I will not interfere unless something outside the scope of this target appears. This is your work.”

She stepped back into a position with clear lines of sight and no easy approach to her flanks. Her meaning was obvious. She would watch but she would not solve it for him.

Lin Feng adjusted his grip on the knife, felt the familiar edge of irritation and focus settle into place, and stepped onto the platform.

The residual field pressed against him at once. A shape shifted at the far edge of the roots, plated shell slick with moisture, eyes reflecting dull light as it registered the intrusion. Killing intent flickered from it, tentative but real.

Lin Feng didn’t wait for it to decide.

The fight was really short. Lin Feng used the upgraded Traction and Dash to keep from being driven toward the water, answered overcommitments with Counterstep, and cut for the joints and softer seams in the plating. The creature was stronger , but it lacked the overwhelming pressure of the water beast or the first creature he had bound. He took a heavy glancing blow across the already bruised ribs and a shallow rake along his forearm before he finally drove the knife into the gap beneath its jaw and twisted.

It collapsed. And Residual hostility flooded the platform.

Lin Feng dropped into a sitting position before the field could thin, pulled the dense residual anger into his meridians the way he had learned, util the gains began to slow. When he opened his eyes again, his foundation felt fractionally denser, the strain of previous injuries a little more distant.

Yu Mei approached only after he stood.

”Adequate,” she said. ”But you still waste motion when you get pressured near the waterline. The residual field was good, you used most of it before it dispersed. That was progress.”

She looked outward into the mist, already choosing the next line of travel.

”We should keep moving. There are two more nodes worth visiting before the light drops too far, and a potential bind target if the signs I saw earlier still hold. Stay on my left, tighten your presence again and do not assume every residual field will be this clean.”

Lin Feng wiped the knife, adjusted the satchel, and fell into position beside her as she started forward. Yu Mei held a steady, efficient pace, occasionally adjusting their line without explanation. Lin Feng matched her as best he could, working on keeping his residual hostility drawn in tighter the way she had told him.

After a while he judged the immediate surroundings quiet enough to risk a question.

”How do you stay updated with so much of what happens in this swamp?” he asked. ”You always seem to know which nodes are fresh, which territories changed hands, which paths are temporarily safer.”

Yu Mei did not look back.

”That’s my secret to keep, kid.” Her voice was dry. ”And I don’t know everything that happens in this swamp. No one does.”

She stepped over a low root cluster and added, quieter, ”Keep conversation to a minimum until we reach a safer position. Some of the things that hunt here have very keen hearing. Sound carries farther than you think in this mist.”

Lin Feng accepted the shut down and fell silent again.

They moved on. The only sounds were the soft give of wet roots underfoot and the occasional distant shift of water or vegetation. During one of the longer quiet stretches, a small observation surfaced in his mind.

The system had been strangely quiet during his worst injuries. As if the system itself pulled back into some kind of rest mode whenever his condition turned critical. He had no idea whether it was a limitation, a built in safeguard, or something else entirely. It was just another unanswered strangeness sitting in the back of his mind. There was nothing he could do about it right now.

They walked farther and eventually the immediate sense of predatory attention eased a little. Yu Mei’s shoulders loosened by a fraction enough that he decided to push the more important question.

”I’ve been wondering,” he said, keeping his voice low. ”Last time, you only offered information to me. You were very clear you wouldn’t leave the shelter or take real risks for me. What changed? Why leave it behind and actually come with me? Not that I’m complaining.”

Yu Mei shot him a sideways look that carried clear irritation.

For a while she said nothing. They covered another stretch of uneven roots in silence. Then she sighed.

”Last time I wasn’t sure you would survive long enough for help to matter,” she said. ”You were loud and reckless. Offering information was lowcost. ”

She stepped over a dark pool without breaking stride.

”Then you became the only person I’ve heard of who was forcibly expelled by the swamp and still made it back inside. The swamp does not make deals with everyone. It saw something in you worth bargaining over. On top of that, you only regained access because Orchid Veil chose to help an outsider, a man to reopen the path. That means the sect saw something in you as well.

”Because of the deal you accepted, my long term tolerance under the swamp is now partially tied to your success. My freedom in part depends on you not failing. So making sure you do not fail has become my problem. That is why I am here.”

Lin Feng nodded.

Yu Mei gave a short nod back, as if that was the only acceptable response, and returned her attention to the path ahead.

”Be cautious. The next residual node is ahead of us. ”
