Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse

Jayce stood up and looked at everyone. ”Since we’re all gathered together today, Sierra and I have something to tell you all.”

Hearing this, Yvonne immediately looked over at Jayce, her eyes full of anticipation and her expression turning a little tense.

Everyone else also stared intently at Jayce, waiting for him to continue.

Jayce cleared his throat and said, ”Sierra and I just met with Captain Grant. We told him we agree to his previous proposal to join the official team. From now on, you all won’t have to live in constant fear.”

Yvonne blinked. ”That’s it?”

”That’s it!” Jayce was a little confused. ”What else could there be?”

’Didn’t I say everything that needed to be said?’

’Why does Yvonne have that kind of expression?’

Yvonne was speechless.

’What should I do? I suddenly have the urge to smack my son.’

’All my nervousness, excitement, and anticipation were for nothing!’

’I thought Jayce was going to announce something about him and Sierra...’

’But it turns out, I was completely overthinking it.’

Seeing the complicated expression on Yvonne’s face, Jayce felt a little curious. ”Mom, what is it? If there’s something on your mind, you can just say it!”

Yvonne shot Jayce an irritated glare. ”It’s nothing. Nothing at all!”

’I want to ask, but how can I, right in front of Sierra?’

Seeing that Yvonne had no intention of elaborating, Jayce didn’t press the matter.

Charlotte Morgan looked at Jayce, then at Yvonne, and raised her own glass. ”This is still good news. We can still have a drink to celebrate!”

Seeing that it was Charlotte who was stepping in to ease the tension, Sierra Sullivan was even more surprised.

’Charlotte has really changed so much!’

’Is this really the same Charlotte I knew at the beginning?’

Although shocked, Sierra still raised her glass along with everyone else.

With this interruption, the awkward moment was considered over.

It was New Year’s Eve dinner, after all. The large family sat together, talking, laughing, and eating, having a very happy time.

In the past, after New Year’s Eve dinner, they could all sit together and watch the Spring Festival Gala.

Back then, they mostly complained that the Gala wasn’t good, finding all sorts of faults with it.

Now, just wanting to watch the Spring Festival Gala had become a luxury.

Even Charlotte sighed with emotion, ”People really only learn to cherish something after they’ve lost it!”

When they could watch it before, they didn’t even want to spare it a second glance.

Now that they couldn’t, they felt that every single Gala had actually been pretty good.

Even though there was no Spring Festival Gala to watch, they didn’t break up right away.

After cleaning up the dishes and the table, Sierra brought out some board games, cards, and the like.

The time passed quite quickly as they played, ate, and talked.

It wasn’t until after midnight that everyone finally went their separate ways.

Yvonne stood at the door, watching as Sierra and the others left one by one, walking farther and farther away until they disappeared from sight. Only then did she close the door.

When she turned around, what she saw was a room that looked no different than it had before.

The room was neat and tidy; there wasn’t even a single sunflower seed shell left behind.

Sierra had taken all the trash with her.

All the furniture had also been wiped sparkling clean.

Looking at these familiar surroundings, Yvonne felt a bit dazed.

It was as if everything that had just happened was a dream.

Yvonne slowly walked over to the sofa and sat down, letting out a sigh. ”If our house were a little bigger, they could have stayed the night.”

Kevin Everett took Yvonne’s hand. ”Look at you, always letting your imagination run wild. They don’t live far away. If you want to see them, you can go find them tomorrow. Or I can go ask them to come back for dinner again. What’s there to be sad about?”

”Let’s not.” Yvonne shook her head. ”They all have their own things to do. Life isn’t easy for anyone. It’s enough for them to come back once in a while. Coming back every day would take up too much of their time.”

”If you understand all that, then what are you sad about?” Kevin wasn’t quite following. ”I remember you didn’t used to be like this!”

’The Yvonne of the past would never have been this sentimental.’

’Yvonne was always endlessly busy, always decisive and dynamic.’

’Why has she become so melancholy now?’

Yvonne gave a self-deprecating smile. ”You think I want to be like this? But can our current situation even compare to how things were before?”

’Before, I was busy every day with company matters, busy outwitting and outmaneuvering my rivals. I only ever felt like there wasn’t enough time. When would I have had the time to be sentimental?’

’Even if my children wanted to have a meal with me, they had to see if I had the time.’

’It’s nothing like it is now...’

It wasn’t that Yvonne thought her current life was bad, nor that she disliked eating and chatting with Jayce and the others.

It was just that she couldn’t accept being idle every day, doing nothing but waiting for her children to come home to see her and chat with her.

This kind of life was simply terrifying.

Yvonne suddenly gripped Kevin’s hand tightly. ”I want to open a small shop.”

Startled by Yvonne’s sudden, firm grip on his hand, Kevin jumped.

But he immediately put that aside and just looked at Yvonne. ”Open a small shop? What kind of shop? Selling what?”

”We’ll sell fruits and vegetables!” Yvonne said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. ”Jayce’s Plant System Superpower might not be as good as Candice Tate’s, but spurring the growth of some fruits and vegetables is no problem for him at all. He can be our supplier. We’ll even save on costs. But I won’t let Jayce get the short end of the stick. After we make money and pay the rent, he’ll get sixty and I’ll get forty.”

He could let the first part slide, but when he heard the last sentence, Kevin couldn’t help but laugh.

”A sixty-forty split? As if he’d ever keep such a strict account with you...”

”What do you mean by that?” Yvonne frowned at Kevin. ”Business is business. It’s the same even if we’re mother and son.”

Seeing Yvonne suddenly turn serious, Kevin was a bit stunned and didn’t say anything.

Yvonne looked at Kevin’s complicated expression and belatedly realized she might have been a little too serious.

”Mr. Everett, what’s wrong? I didn’t mean anything by that just now, don’t overthink it, I—”

”It’s nothing!” Kevin squeezed Yvonne’s hand firmly. ”I’m fine. I’m just happy for you. You don’t know, but when you were talking to me just now, you were practically glowing. Just like the old you! I’m not thinking anything else. I’m just happy. Happy for you!”

Yvonne’s eyes stung, and tears almost fell.

”You! At your age, still saying such sappy things...”

Although her words were dismissive, the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but turn up.

Yvonne was very happy!

Not only because she had found something she could do, but also because of what Kevin had just said.

Sierra and Jayce had no idea about any of this.

After the two of them returned with Candice Tate, they had Candice wash up and go to bed first. Then, after washing up themselves, they finally went back to their bedroom.

Lying in bed, Jayce suddenly recalled the subtle, awkward moment during dinner.

”Sierra, what do you think was up with Mom today? Why did she keep glaring at me?”
