His mother urged him to get married.

He was unable to tell his mother his true concerns. If he were to tell her that it was because he could not be too high-profile when his Boss’ love affair was not going well, given his mother’s personality, she was sure to find his Boss directly.

He could only say, “I have my plans.”

Li Yingying was even more anxious than his mother. She was just a normal company white-collared worker and received a salary of a few thousand yuan per month that could not feed her full yet did not leave her hungry. Like the rest of the normal people in the city, she would squeeze into public transportation every day and then share a list of take-outs with her fellow colleagues for lunch. If there was no accident, she would follow the existing orbit and live a normal life like all the rest of them—even buying more presentable clothes would need her to be calculative over it for a long time.

It was Chu Chen’s arrival that had changed her lifestyle.

She could now wear what she could not bear to buy in the past, her accessories were of top quality, she sprayed expensive and quality perfume, and even carried the same Chanel bag as Xia Ling.

In the face of the eyes of jealousy of her female colleagues, she knew that she would have to hold onto this wealthy husband.

Whether she was able to transform her destiny all depended on one action.

She indirectly urged him on marriage, saying that she was not young anymore and had to get married to give birth so that both their families’ parents would be reassured. However, Chu Chen said, “Boss has not been in a good mood lately. In this critical junction, we cannot be too high-profile. Oh yes, don’t tell my mother that it is because of Boss.”

Li Yingying asked, “Is it because of Wang Jingwan’s death?”

Wang Jingwan’s death had caused a great sensation. Countless media had sighed and said that such a happily married couple made in heaven had parted ways in such a sad way. As a normal gossipy person, Li Yingying’s heart was igniting in flames of curiosity.

However, Chu Chen was not willing to talk about it. He said, “Don’t ask about what you should not know.”

He wanted a wife who knew her own place, not a busybody who groundlessly mixed rumors together. After following his Boss for so many years, his loyalty to him was something an ordinary person would find hard to achieve. For example, he would never talk behind Boss’ back, even to his closest parents and wife.

Meticulous thoughts and a tight mouth—this was Pei Ziheng’s evaluation of him.

Li Yingying was a little unhappy, but she did not say more. In fact, how was she to know that powerful Pei Ziheng who was so set up on high was not actually secretly upset over his fiance’s death? The woman that Pei Ziheng cared about would forever be only one—Xia Ling. His butterfly, his life, and his light.

When Chu Chen saw Xia Ling once again, she had slimmed down a lot. Her pair of eyes had lost its radiance, and she was curled up docilely in Pei Ziheng’s embrace, letting him feed her some shark fin swallow’s nest porridge that had been boiled down to a soft mushy texture. When she saw Chu Chen, her expression was no longer heartbroken and one of disbelief. Dazed, she had her eyes downcast like a lifeless beautiful doll. This made Chu Chen’s heart heavy unknowingly.

He had originally only cared about Pei Ziheng’s feelings and had not planned on getting married at this juncture. However, now that he saw how Xia Ling was behaving, he felt from his heart that he did not want to get married. The pair of empty soulless eyes was impossible to get rid of from the bottom of his heart. He began to suspect, had it been a wrong move to hand her over to Pei Ziheng when she had tried to escape?

No, how could it be wrong?

She was originally Boss’ personal toy.

Chu Chen convinced himself repeatedly and thought back on how unscrupulously behaved and overbearing she had been when he was her manager. He told himself that each person had their own lives. She had enjoyed so many years of pampering and had trampled on so many people’s lives. This was just the time for her retribution.

However, it was no use.

He still could not control it and would dream of that pair of eyes incessantly.

There was no second pair of eyes in the world that was that crystal clear and yet was able to shake one to its core. It was fine for her to throw her weight about when she was complacent and to be heartbroken when disappointed, but her quick-witted eyes seemed to speak. However, because of the selfish desire of the powerful one, the spirit behind her eyes was now forcibly wrecked.

The end of the road for The Queen.

However, Chu Chen was unexpectedly not used to her not being by his side. There was to be no more reckless girl stirring up trouble and needing him to clean up her mess at all times anymore; there was to be no more pampered and fussy child that would make her assistant run to the fruit juice shop over the sweetness of her citrus juice; there was to be no one who would laugh happily by his side and say, “Chu Chen, look how pretty the sunlight is today, let’s go film an MV!””You’re so amazing. You can capture the most perfect shot every single time!”… One by one, those memories tortured him, making him toss about in bed.

He asked for a leave from Boss and brought Li Yingying to the beach.

Perhaps this would help him forget about Xia Ling.

Li Yingying was indeed a perfect housewife. She would use the hotel’s kitchen to cook for him personally, give him massages with gentle strokes, warn him repeatedly about taking care of his body so as not to catch a cold, wash and clean his clothes, and even iron them neatly before placing them at his bedside. But she would never once laugh impudently like Xia Ling, and not to mention stirring trouble, even when she accidentally knocked against someone at the beach she would be terrified and would apologize incessantly.

Chu Chen did not need to clean up after someone anymore.

His heart felt empty.

He felt as though he were a criminal. He had finally gotten rid of the devil incarnate Xia Ling, and should be putting his hands together praying to God, so how could he be going crazy over how boring life was now that she was gone?

Sometimes, he would stare at Li Yingying and fall into a self-suspicion—was this really the woman he wanted to spend his whole life with? A woman as plain as water, who would not be able to fight alongside him, arouse his fighting spirit nor even interest him to give her another glance.

He felt as though he had really gone crazy. Where on this earth could he go to find a second Xia Ling?

Yet she was Boss’ property—a woman he did not dare to even think about, much less touch.

His thoughts were in turmoil and he closed his eyes painfully.

Li Yingying tried to hint him by saying, “When will President Pei’s mood get better? Why don’t we plan our wedding sequence first, and when his mood is better, we can get married immediately?”

Chu Chen opened his eyes and glanced at her. “You want to marry me that badly?”

Li Yingying blushed. She said shyly, “I feel that you’re the one who can give me happiness.”

“Do you love me?”

Her face got even redder. She nodded.

“Tell me, what do you love about me?”

“Chu Chen—” she said coyishly, avoiding the question. “You’re so bad.”

However, he waited for her answer unmovingly.

Li Yingying pondered over it. What did she love about him? It was said that marriage was a woman’s second reincarnation. What she placed importance on was nothing else but money and authority. Oh yes, and his immaculately-dressed appearance and out-of-the-ordinary style of conversation. To be able to bring such a husband out, she would definitely be able to grow some face. She said bashfully, “I love you for treating me well.”

“How have I treated you well?”

“You bought me clothes and brought me to the beach to play. You… you treat me well.” Her eyes were filled with bliss.
