A Crusader with System in the Middle Ages

In that moment, he felt a strange tranquility—a peace unlike the clamor of clashing swords or the triumphant shouts after a battle. It was a serenity that seemed to come from another world, utterly disconnected from the raging desert winds.

The sound of the instrument sparked a powerful longing within him: to go to the city, to see that world brimming with the unknown and infinite possibilities. He thought of the city life he had never truly experienced—the high walls, the bustling markets, the endless stream of faces, and the people who lived for more than mere survival and conquest.

’Perhaps the people there have their own endless vanity and strife,’ Laila’s father had often said, ’but at least they argue about different things—not about pointless camel races or hollow pride.’

He decided to leave the tribe and head for the city. Not for spoils or for glory, but simply to find a new beginning, a place no longer defined by swords and violence. He took the instrument, a few simple belongings, and slipped away from the tribe unnoticed on a moonless night.

He knew the desert life would forever be behind him, and the city lights were now twinkling ahead.

With a heart full of anticipation and the exquisite instrument in hand, he finally arrived at the city.

As he stepped through the city gates, the sight that greeted him was truly breathtaking—towering walls, bustling markets, and the sound of laughter and conversation mingling with the calls of vendors. It was as if every beautiful thing he had imagined in the desert had converged in this very place.

For the first few days, he was immersed in the city’s vibrancy, filled with excitement and a sense of wonder.

In the desert tribes, life was simple, revolving around survival, honor, and conflict. But the city was entirely different—here, people discussed knowledge, art, and philosophy.

In the markets and teahouses, he overheard conversations he could have never imagined.

Scholars sat together discussing astronomy, mathematics, and literature, as well as curious tales from distant lands.

Those people, immersed in books and ideas, seemed to live a completely different kind of life. Their world was no longer confined to camels, sandstorms, and feuds between tribes.

In the desert tribes, music was simple, usually used to send off warriors before a battle or to liven up a feast.

In the city, however, music was a refined form of artistic expression. The instrument had given him a taste of the city’s wonders, and now, in plazas and courtyards, he saw true musicians. They used strings, drums, and flutes to weave melodies far more complex and beautiful than any sound he had ever heard in the desert.

He would stop in the plazas and listen to the wandering musicians play. He was mesmerized by the sorrow, joy, love, and farewells expressed in their music, as if all of human emotion could be laid bare through sound.

This refined art was far more profound and moving than the coarse musical forms of his desert tribe. He began to realize that music and art were not merely for entertainment or celebration, but another language—a way to express the deepest feelings of the soul.

However, beyond the allure of city life, he soon found himself in a predicament. He discovered that, apart from fighting, he had no means of making a living in the city. This left him feeling utterly lost.

He loved this city, but it did not love him back.

The Arabs in the city had no need for him.

The Arab nobility and merchants of the city no longer relied on Bedouin warriors; they had no need for a warrior from the desert like him. Here, the combat skills that had once made him so distinguished in his tribe were utterly useless.

They preferred to hire formidable Turkic mercenaries—warriors from the north who were tall, disciplined, and far better suited to the needs of the urban elite than a Bedouin accustomed to the free-form fighting style of the desert.

Far away on the frontier, the Governor of Syria for the Byzantine Empire was recruiting warriors just like him. The Byzantine Empire’s frontier needed warriors to defend its territories, especially against incursions by the Arabs, the Turkic People, and other nomadic tribes.

He knew it was a place even more prosperous than the world of Arabia, so he decided to journey to the Byzantine frontier in pursuit of a new destiny.

The Byzantine Empire was a Christian nation. Though it stood in opposition to the world of Arabia, it was always willing to hire foreign warriors—be they Turkic People, Slavs, or Bedouin like himself.

The Byzantine Governor of Syria guarded the border day and night, and what he lacked most were warriors familiar with the desert and its guerrilla tactics. As a warrior who had roamed the desert for many years, he was the perfect candidate to fill that role.

And so, he embarked on a new journey, traveling north through desolate frontier towns until he reached an outpost of the Byzantine Empire. He presented himself to the Governor, demonstrating his combat experience in the desert and his masterful Riding Skill.

The Governor hired him gladly. On the Byzantine frontier, the nomadic experience and mobility of a Bedouin warrior were the very advantages desperately needed to counter Turkic raids.

In his time among the Greeks, he learned that the instrument he had acquired back in his tribe was from Greece. Its name was the Lyre.

He began learning from the Greeks how to play the Lyre, at first just simply plucking the strings and mimicking the beautiful melodies he heard. Though his fingers were long accustomed to the grip of a sword, he found a completely different kind of peace and satisfaction in holding the strings of the Lyre.
