The General's Daughter: The Mission

Laguna had transformed into something unrecognizable.

Once a forgotten province resting in the shadow of the Alta-Sierra mountain range, just miles from the imposing Mount Ourea, it had risen into the nation’s very pulse—outshining even the capital in both power and allure.

The air buzzed with anticipation, the docks crowded with arrivals, and the once-sleepy streets now pulsed with luxury vehicles, flashing cameras, and hushed speculation.

They came in waves.

Politicians with carefully measured smiles. Business tycoons with sharp eyes and sharper ambitions. Academicians chasing prestige. Even the glittering figures of the entertainment world arrived, drawn like moths to a flame they didn’t fully understand.

And at the center of it all—Isla.

But beneath the spectacle, a single revelation had ignited everything.

The identity of Themis had leaked.

And the trail led to Amelia.

Liam still couldn’t wrap his head around it.

The novel—the one that revived the Kromwel legacy and set the entire country into a frenzy—was written by her?

Amelia?

His Amelia?

The same Amelia he remembered as quiet... almost invisible young woman..

Back then, she had been nothing more than a timid presence in the mountain villa where he recuperated. Always careful. Always distant. Gentle in the way she moved, in the way she spoke—when she spoke at all.

He hadn’t seen her as a woman.

Not even once.

To him, she had been like one of his soldiers—reliable, silent, there when needed and gone when not. Their interactions had been sparse, functional. They spoke necessary words, nothing more.

And yet...

There were moments...

Moments he hadn’t understood then.

He remembered catching her looking at him—quick, fleeting glances she thought he didn’t notice. And in those rare instances when their eyes met, there had been something there.

Something he couldn’t name.

Something he had chosen to ignore.

But the woman before him now—

She was nothing like that girl.

Liam’s gaze lingered, unguarded, on Amelia as she sat beside his sister, Lara. The two of them were surrounded by sharply dressed men—executives from one of the most prestigious film production companies in the country.

Amelia held their attention effortlessly.

The way she tilted her head as she responded—calm, composed, assured. The way she carried herself—back straight, shoulders relaxed, every movement deliberate. There was a quiet authority in her presence, one that didn’t demand attention but commanded it anyway.

She looked...like she could sit or stand beside Lara and not looked neglected...unlike before.

She looked like she belonged there.

Liam’s brows subtly furrowed.

Was this transformation Lara’s influence?

Or had something deeper changed?

Was it the weight of her lineage—the truth she had come to understand—that reshaped her into this person?

Confident...

Elegant...

Regal...

Just like the bearing of a princess.

...

Ding.

The sharp sound snapped him out of his thoughts.

His phone screen lit up, casting a pale glow against his expression as he read the message. His jaw tightened, the brief softness in his gaze vanishing as duty settled back onto his shoulders.

Another VIP had arrived.

Another responsibility.

Another reason to leave.

Liam exhaled quietly, then glanced back one last time.

Just once.

His eyes lingered on Amelia—on the woman he no longer recognized, yet couldn’t seem to look away from.

Then, with reluctance he refused to acknowledge, he turned and mounted his motorbike.

The engine roared to life.

And just like that, he rode away—leaving behind the storm that had only just begun.

...

”Miss Amelia, would you be willing to sell the film adaptation rights to your novel? We can assure you—your story will be brought to life with the highest level of artistic realism and care.”

The man speaking was in his late forties, his tone warm and practiced, the kind that put people at ease without effort. His smile was measured, his demeanor refined—every inch the seasoned negotiator. He slid a neatly prepared summary of the contract across the table, his movements unhurried, confident.

On the surface, Amelia appeared composed.

Calm. Attentive. In control.

But beneath that carefully held exterior, everything felt unsteady.

The conversation moved too quickly.

Voices overlapped—smooth, practiced, calculated. Questions were layered beneath compliments, intentions hidden behind polite smiles. Every word seemed to carry weight, every pause felt like a test she didn’t know she was taking.

Amelia kept her posture straight, just as she had seen Lara do. She listened carefully, choosing her words with caution—but it wasn’t enough. There were gaps she couldn’t bridge, meanings she couldn’t quite grasp fast enough.

For all her newfound composure, she was still learning the language of this world.

Her fingers tightened subtly on her lap as another question was directed at her—something about adaptation rights, projections, expectations. The kind of question that demanded confidence she had yet to fully claim.

The conversation had stretched longer than she was used to, weaving through terms and projections she was still struggling to fully grasp. The polite smiles, the subtle probing, the layered intentions behind every question—it was exhausting.

A dull ache began to build at her temples.

Her thoughts, once clear, now tangled under pressure.

She could feel it—her composure, slowly slipping.

Then, a gentle squeeze.

Amelia’s fingers tightened instinctively as Lara’s hand closed around hers, steady and grounding. It was a small gesture, almost unnoticeable, but it anchored her—pulled her back from the edge of overwhelm.

Before Amelia could respond, Lara spoke.

”She’s still considering several offers,” Lara said with a faint, knowing smile. ”After all, a story of that scale deserves careful handling.”

A faint, polite smile curved her lips, but her gaze remained sharp.

”We’ll need time to properly review the terms. Once we’ve done that, we’ll reach out.”

The room fell into a brief, measured silence.

Mr. Herman studied her.

Carefully.

He had spent decades negotiating high-stakes contracts with Netscape Entertainment, closing deals with seasoned executives, outmaneuvering rivals twice his age. He prided himself on reading people—on spotting hesitation, exploiting it, turning it into opportunity.

And Amelia—he had already assessed.

Talented. Inexperienced. Easy to guide.

He had been certain he could secure her signature within half a day.

But this woman beside her—

Lara—

She was something else entirely.

Composed. Calculating. Unyielding.

Far too sharp for someone her age.

Mr. Herman’s smile didn’t falter, but behind it, his thoughts shifted.

This just became more complicated.

Who exactly is she?

His investigation had been thorough—Amelia, her background, even her grandfather.

But Lara?

Nothing.

And that, more than anything, unsettled him.
